Cardinals placed LHP JoJo Romero on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 14, with appendicitis.

No word yet from the Cardinals on how long they anticipate Romero being shelved for. Scott Blewett was promoted from Triple-A Memphis to take his spot in the Cardinals’ bullpen while Yohel Pozo was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
HLs: Giants hold on to defeat Cardinals in extras
After leading for most of the game, things got interesting late between the Giants and Cardinals, where San Francisco did just enough to make some magic happen in extras to send St. Louis home with a tough loss.

Jarren Duran is not in the starting lineup against the Angels on Tuesday.

After a solid month of August, Duran has started September going 4-for-27 (.148) with a 32 percent strikeout rate. Despite the fact that he’s hitting better against lefties this season, Duran will take a seat with Roman Anthony starting in left field and Jahmai Jones starting at designated hitter and batting second.

Mickey Gasper is not in the starting lineup for the Red Sox against the Angels on Tuesday.

Since the All-Star break, Gasper is hitting .327/.514/.865 with eight home runs, 12 runs scored, and 15 RBI. Despite being a switch-hitter, Gasper will get a day off against lefty Reid Detmers, with Nick Sogard playing first base and batting fifth and Andruw Monasterio starting at second base and batting seventh.

Padres signed free agent RHP Trevor Gott to a minor league contract.

Gott had been with the Nationals this season, pitching to a 3.55 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 27/15 K/BB ratio in 33 innings at Triple-A. He has not pitched in an MLB game since posting a 4.19 ERA in 58 innings in 2023.

Sam Moll cleared waivers and is now a free agent

Moll had been designated for assignment by the Reds on Sunday after registering a 4.79 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and a 56/30 K/BB ratio over 65 appearances. He should land somewhere else soon.

Orioles OF Christian Franklin (hand) and 1B Ryan Mountcastle (oblique) are both initiating hitting progressions.

Franklin has been sidelined with hand inflammation for just under two weeks, so he may not need a long ramp-up; however, Mountcastle has been out with a fractured foot since April 11th because he also suffered an oblique strain at the end of July. He will be on a far longer return-to-play timeline and may struggle to make it back by the end of the regular season.

Ryan Helsley (elbow) will throw his first live batting practice session on Tuesday.

Helsley has been sidelined with elbow discomfort since July 1st, so he will likely need a few weeks to ramp back up. That does put his return to the big leagues in question for this season, but the Orioles are just three games out of the final playoff spot, so they’ll keep working to get their closer back in case he can help them over the final week or so of the season.

Boston Globe’s Tim Healey reports that Garrett Crochet (shoulder) “is tracking towards being ready for the first round of the playoffs.”

Healey also notes that it’s likely Crochet will not pitch in a game in the majors or minors before returning for the postseason. One would assume the Red Sox would not want to use him in high-leverage innings right away without any rehab assignment, but it’s possible that he could be used as a three-or-four-inning opener or bulk reliever, perhaps in tandem with Ranger Suarez or Brayan Bello in a postseason rotaiton that will likely feature Sonny Gray and Payton Tolle as well.

Miguel Andujar (fractured wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday

Andujar has been sidelined since June 20th with a fractured wrist when he was hit by a pitch. There are just 12 days left in the Triple-A season, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him spend the majority of that with El Paso given how long he’s been sidelined and then return to the Padres roster for the final week or two and potential playoffs.

    Royals released 3B Brandon Drury.

Drury was hitting just .241/.373/.387 with six home runs and a 26 percent strikeout rate in 60 games at Triple-A. He did have a 45 percent hard-hit rate, and he can play multiple positions, so it wouldn’t be surprising for the 34-year-old to receive a spring training invite somewhere next season.

    Padres released RHP José Leclerc.

Leclerc was making his way back from last August’s shoulder surgery, but he posted just a 7.77 ERA in 24 1/3 innings in the Padres’ minor league system and an 11.74 ERA in seven appearances at Triple-A specifically. We’d expect him to get another minor league contract in the offseason.
