Angel Martínez (foot) began a minor league rehab assignment on Friday with Triple-A Columbus.

Martínez started in left field and was 0-for-2 before the contest was suspended due to rain. The 24-year-old corner outfielder is working his way back from a non-displaced left foot fracture that put him on the injured list on June 16. He’ll require at least a couple games to get back up to speed following the extended layoff, but he should make it back to Cleveland’s lineup by late July.

Mike Florio explores recent revelations surrounding the search firm Korn Ferry and its role in providing documents to Brian Flores's lawyer, ones that could potentially include a "smoking gun" piece of evidence.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt told reporters that DeLauter is feeling better after receiving treatment during Monday’s off-day. He added that an MRI on his left hamstring didn’t reveal any structural issues. It’s an encouraging update after the 24-year-old rookie made an early exit from Sunday’s game with mild hamstring tightness. All signs point to DeLauter managing to avoid a trip to the injured list and returning to Cleveland’s lineup at some point this week. It’ll be Jo Adell and Angel Martínez in the outfield corners on Tuesday evening.

Both of Martínez’s doubles held weight in this game. His first came in the first inning as Framber Valdez nearly escaped a bases loaded jam with zero outs and just one run home. With two outs, Martínez doubled home a key second run. Then, as the Guardians needed insurance late, Martínez’s seventh inning double helped set up a two-run rally. Red-hot in August after going hit-less in first 18 at-bats off the injured list, Martínez is riding an eight-game hitting streak and is 13-for-33 this month.

Martínez put the Guardians on the board in the top of the first inning when he singled to drive home José Ramírez and Steven Kwan to put the Guardians up 2-0. In the fifth inning, Martínez would come up with the bases loaded and deposit a pitch from David Sandlin 435 feet into right-center for a grand slam and push the Guardians’ lead to 6-1. It was the third grand slam of Martínez’s career and his second this season, with his first on the year coming in April against the Royals. Martínez has now hit safely in four straight games and is slashing .350/.381/.600 this month.

Catcher Jacob Cozart is one player going the other way. Given the way the Angels are stocking up on Angels, maybe Martínez is also involved. The Guardians have paid for ignoring their outfield in recent years, and Adell’s right-handed power will add balance to their lineup. He figures to take over in right field, with Chase DeLauter spending more time at DH. Martinez figures to lose at-bats, unless he’s in the deal.

It’s strange to see DeLauter taking a seat against a right-handed starter, especially since he’s hitting .344 (11-for-32) with four RBI and two steals in eight games since the All-Star break. With Angel Martínez back in right field, it’ll be rookie Travis Bazzana at DH with Gabriel Arias handling second base on Saturday evening.

Martínez was playing essentially everyday while hitting .239/.276/.442 with 11 homers and nine stolen bases in 243 plate appearances before suffering a foot fracture in mid-June. He’ll likely be a big part of the Guardians lineup again right away, and fantasy managers can jump on him if he was dropped in shallower leagues. He’s batting leadoff tonight against the Rays.

Martínez suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left foot and was placed on the injured list back on June 16th. He has already begun to do ground-based conditioning and is now hitting as well. The Guardians will ramp up his activity level in the coming days to see how his foot responds, but they are apparently hopeful he can return after the All-Star break.
  • CLE Left Fielder #1
It’s a significant hit to Cleveland’s corner outfield rotation since Martínez is expected to miss at least 4-6 weeks, according to manager Stephen Vogt. He was playing virtually everyday, hitting .239/.276/.442 with 11 homers, 33 RBI and nine steals in 243 plate appearances through 66 games. He suffered the injury when he fouled a ball off his foot over the weekend. The 24-year-old’s power/speed combination made him an impactful fantasy contributor and a borderline top-40 outfielder. There isn’t an official return timetable yet, but fantasy managers should anticipate a lengthy absence given the severity of the injury.

The versatile 24-year-old left Saturday’s game due to a contusion that he sustained after fouling a ball off of his left foot. He’s considered day-to-day and the Guardians are hopeful that he’ll return to the lineup on Tuesday.

Martínez departed Saturday’s game against the tigers an inning after fouling a ball off the foot and was replaced by Steven Kwan, who had been out of the lineup against Tarik Skubal.

Garrett Crochet (shoulder) told MassLive.com that he plans to return as a reliever this season.

Crochet, who has been sidelined with a capsule strain in his shoulder since late April, added that he could potentially make it back as a one or two-inning reliever if he makes it back to Boston before the end of the season. The 27-year-old ace would provide the Red Sox with a real weapon out of the bullpen for the postseason, but his odds of making any sort of meaningful fantasy impact appear nonexistent for the rest of the season. There’s a contractual component to Crochet’s absence where he’s missed enough time that the opt-out in his six-year, $170 million contract with the club converts to a $15 million club option for 2032. Basically, the Red Sox have Crochet under control for five guaranteed years and $142 million with a sixth-year option for 2032.

Kevin Gausman left Tuesday’s start against the White Sox with a trainer.

The encouraging news here is that Gausman appeared to be dealing with an issued related to his non-throwing hand, which led to his early departure. He was charged with three runs on seven hits, including a solo homer by Munetaka Murakami, over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five and only issued two walks. There should be an update on his status following the contest.

Alejandro Kirk went 3-for-6 with a double, a two-run home run, two runs scored and three RBI against the Rays on Tuesday.

Kirk’s home run was his sixth of the season. He hit a two-run shot off Nick Martinez in the third inning. Injuries have limited Kirk to 51 games so far this season, but he’s produced when he’s been available. He’s hitting .279 with a .774 OPS and 25 RBI this year.

Nick Martinez allowed six runs in 3 2/3 innings and took the loss against the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Martinez gave up nine hits, walked two and struck out five. He fell to 12-4 with the loss. Martinez entered play Tuesday with a 2.74 ERA despite a 4.54 xFIP. He’s out-pitched his xFIP for most of his career, but not by that much. Martinez now has a 3.05 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Orioles on the road on Sunday.

José Soriano allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings and got the win in the Blue Jays’ 10-5 victory over the Rays on Tuesday.

Soriano gave up nine hits, walked none and struck out two. He improved to 10-6 with the win. Soriano was able to get by while allowing nine hits because all of the hits were singles, he didn’t walk a single batter and he was able to pitch out of jams. He has a 3.23 ERA. Soriano is lined up to face the Yankees on the road on Sunday.

Brett Callahan went 2-for-3 with a solo home run against the Pirates on Tuesday.

Callahan’s home run was the first of his major league career. He hit a solo shot off Braxton Ashcraft in the fifth inning. Callahan is 4-for-9 (.444) with a home run and five RBI in the first three games of his career. As long as his bat stays hot, he’ll continue to see regular playing time against right-handed pitching until Riley Greene (hamstring) returns.
