Logan Allen to start second game against Pirates

Serving as the Guardians’ 27th man, Allen allowed six hits, walked three and struck out three in his second appearance this year. It’s the first time in 98 games this year that the Guardians have needed to look beyond their usual five starters. Allen will now head back to Triple-A and wait for a more significant role to open up.

Allen pitched four shutout innings against the Nationals on Monday, striking out seven. It was a good impression, but the Guardians bullpen needed fresh arms. Allen holds a 5.45 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in eight starts with Columbus, so he’s not terribly fantasy relevant at this point.

Allen has been pitching as a starter at the Triple-A level, posting an uninspiring 5.45 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and a 43/19 K/BB ratio across 38 innings through his first eight starts. He’ll give the Guardians’ bullpen another option that’s capable of working multiple innings. Peyton Pallette was designated for assignment in a corresponding move on Sunday.

That’s no good. Bibee was removed while warming up for the sixth inning tonight. After the game, he said the injury was a new one, and he got to the point where he felt like he “couldn’t battle through it.” Given his comments, even if the injury proves to be relatively minor, we imagine he’ll spend some time on the IL. Logan Allen is the obvious choice to replace him in the Cleveland rotation, though the Guardians could recall Codi Heuer until a start is needed against the Dodgers on Tuesday.

The writing was seemingly on the wall after Allen was torched for 12 runs over 2 1/3 innings on Friday in a spring start against the Mariners. The move clears the runway for intriguing pitching prospect Parker Messick to open the regular season in Cleveland’s rotation.

Yikes. Allen also issued a pair of walks while striking out two. On a day where he probably just needed to avoid a disaster to hold onto his spot in the Guardians’ Opening Day rotation, Allen instead opted to have one of the worst spring performances that we have ever seen. What’s crazy is that he worked a scoreless first inning before getting torched for 10 runs in the second including a solo homer by Cole Young. Allen also saw action in the third and fourth innings where he continued to be knocked around, including serving up a two-run blast to Julio Rodriguez. This could be the final straw that costs him his spot in the Guardians’ rotation.

Messick worked the middle innings after Logan Allen allowed two runs in three innings to start the game. It’s not entirely set that Joey Cantillo will be in the Guardians’ rotation, but he seems like a good bet, which would leave one spot for Messick and Allen. Messick is far more interesting for fantasy purposes, but upside might not win the day.

The 27-year-old southpaw struck out four batters on the afternoon while issuing a pair of free passes. He allowed a two-run double to Alejandro Osuna in the second inning that tied the game and a two-run single to Jake Burger in the third that gave the Rangers the lead. Allen got eight whiffs on 88 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 25 percent. He wraps up his regular season with an uninspiring 8-11 record, 4.25 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a 122/62 K/BB ratio across 156 2/3 innings in 30 appearances (29 starts).
