Michael McGreevy holds D-backs to two runs

McGreevy had an outstanding first half for the Cardinals, posting a 3.01 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 66/23 K/BB ratio over 101 2/3 innings through his first 18 starts. Dustin May will follow on Saturday with Andre Pallante taking the ball in Sunday’s series finale.

Pitching on his birthday, McGreevy turned in a gem. After a bit of chaos to start the game, he retired 17 of the next 18 hitters he faced. The only one who reached was thrown out stealing the McGreevy barely broke a sweat during the middle innings of this one. He was eventually pulled after allowing two hits in the seventh and one of those inherited runners scored as the only blemish on his ledger. As usual, he mixed his deep, seven-pitch repertoire beautifully and mostly hung around near the edges of the plate. This was a fantastic close to an amazing first with a 3.01 ERA, 66 strikeouts, and 23 walks through 101 2/3 innings.

If not for Ozzie Albies, McGreevy would’ve turned in an even better start here. In the first inning, Albies doubled on the fifth pitch of the game to drive home Drake Baldwin who’d just singled. Then, he homered in the third. Besides those three batted balls, just one other Braves batter reached base against McGreevy. He worked his cutter beautifully at the letters for whiffs and showed good command of the rest of his secondary pitches as well. On the season, he has a 3.12 ERA, 60 strikeouts, and 22 walks through 95 1/3 innings. He’s scheduled for a two-start week against the Brewers and Braves to close out the first half.

McGreevy did his part, but neither team scored until the eighth in the Marlins’ 4-0 victory. It was McGreevy’s 10th quality start of the year, but he remained 3-6 with a 3.12 ERA. Meanwhile, Andre Pallante has gone 9-4 while giving up four more runs in 6 2/3 fewer innings for the same team. McGreevy will likely make his next start Wednesday or Thursday against the Braves.

The game will be made up on July 23. Expect Thursday’s scheduled starters — Michael McGreevy and Zac Gallen — to pitch on Friday for their respective ballclubs.

McGreevy was mostly unscathed in this start despite completely unraveling in the fourth inning. He gave up four of his five runs in that frame and just could not seem to find a put-away pitch. All four of the Royals hits that inning came with two strikes and McGreevy had two strikes on the one hitter he walked as well. Such is the problem with McGreevy having a deep arsenal with solid command, but unable to miss bats consistently. He’ll take a 3.35 ERA, 53 strikeouts, and 20 walks across 83 1/3 innings so far this season into his next scheduled start against the Diamondbacks at home.

McGreevy allowed just a two-run homer in the fourth to Victor Caratini, and exited after six innings with a 4-2 lead. The Twins would score the next three, so it’s a hard-luck no-decision for the former first-round pick. McGreevy walked two and struck out two, and saw his ERA remain 2.99 in the process. He’ll be back on the bump next Friday in a scheduled start against the Royals in Kansas City.

McGreevy gave up five hits, walked none and struck out five. The 25-year-old allowed solo home runs to Matt McClain and Tyler Stephenson in the third inning, but otherwise wasn’t scored on. He has a 2.99 ERA as his excellent season continues. McGreevy will face the Twins on the road next weekend.

While it’s a third straight loss for McGreevy, this was a better performance than the other two, even if he did notch just one strikeout. Aided by two double plays, he got his 18 outs on 84 pitches. McGreevy is now 3-5 with a 2.98 ERA. He’ll take on the Reds on Sunday.

McGreevy gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out six. He fell to 3-4 with the loss. McGreevy’s ERA is up to 2.98 while his xFIP is 3.77, showing he’s still not as good as his ERA. Fantasy managers should tread lightly with McGreevy. He’s lined up to face the Rangers next week.
