Giants release catcher Eric Haase

Haase did not appear in a major league game with the White Sox after being released by the Giants. He hit .360/.467/.560 in 30 plate appearances with Triple-A Charlotte. Perhaps he’s got an opportunity elsewhere he prefers.

Haase bolsters Chicago’s catching situation behind youngsters Drew Romo and Edgar Quero while Kyle Teel (ankle) is on the injured list. The 33-year-old veteran was cut loose by the Giants last weekend after hitting .162 (12-for-74) across 33 games this season.

It’s not the first time the 33-year-old has been through the DFA cycle. Haase hit just .162/.235/.365 with four homers and nine RBI in 84 plate appearances with the Giants. He’ll likely pass through waivers unclaimed and then get to make the decision on whether to remain with the Giants at Triple-A Sacramento or attempt to latch on elsewhere.

Susac will go on the IL for a second time after previously missing almost four weeks with elbow neuritis in April and May. The rookie has hit .262/.310/.330 in 115 plate appearances, with most of his success coming very early on. He’d hit just .200/.258/.238 in 26 games since returning from the elbow injury. Drew Cavanaugh and Eric Haase will fill in for him, with Cavanaugh getting the nod in his MLB debut tonight.

Jackson Chourio might have had a play on the 406-foot shot to center, but he misjudged it a little at the wall. Haase’s previous slams came in 2021 and ’22 with the Tigers. He has four homers in 41 plate appearances since the Giants called him up on Apr. 21.

Haase got the start on Tuesday, with Jesus Rodriguez getting a breather. He came through with a solo homer off Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the third inning. Haase did it again in the fifth, going back-to-back with Harrison Bader for his second of the game. He nearly hit a third one out in the seventh, sending a 399-foot fly ball just in front of the center field wall. The 33-year-old backstop has performed well in his limited time, going 6-for-18, but he’s unlikely to see regular playing time ahead of Rodriguez and eventually Daniel Susac.

It’s a tough break for the rookie backstop after hitting the shelf prior to Tuesday’s series opener against the Dodgers. The 24-year-old was off to a hot start, hitting .478 (11-for-23) with three extra-base hits and five RBI in 11 games. It’ll be Eric Haase coming up to handle the backup catching duties in his absence behind starter Patrick Bailey.

It’s now official that Rule 5 pick Daniel Susac has won the backup catching gig in San Francisco. Haase hit .286/.375/.536 this spring and will likely be offered a minor league deal to stick around. First, though, he’ll get to see if another team might want to give him a major league gig.
