José Soriano allows only unearned run in victory

This isn’t performance related, as the 27-year-old Kelenic was hitting .404/.469/.684 for Triple-A Round Rock this month. So, he must be receiving interest from another major league team or perhaps a club in Asia. Kelenic hit .213/.304/.295 in 69 plate appearances for the White Sox and Rangers in major league stints earlier this season.

He averaged 96.4 mph with his 10 fastballs today, topping out at 97.7 mph.

Blewett was DFA’d by St. Louis on Wednesday after pitching two scoreless innings for the team. The Cardinals had only called him up because he opted out of minor league contract on July 15, forcing the issue. The 30-year-old journeyman has a 4.10 ERA in 74 2/3 career innings as a major leaguer. He’s out of options, so the A’s will add him to their bullpen immediately.

Urquidy, who spent most of last year working his way back from Tommy John, made the Pirates out of spring training this year, only to lose his spot after giving up 10 runs — six earned — in 6 1/3 innings over five relief appearances. He’d since posted a 3.66 ERA with a 73/18 K/BB in 83 2/3 innings as a starter for Triple-A Indianapolis. According to SoxMachine’s James Fegan, Urquidy will likely go to Triple-A for now.

Doroteo, 21, signed out of the Dominican Republic last year. The 6-foot-6 righty has a 4.50 ERA and a 24/11 K/BB in 18 innings in the Arizona Complex League this year.

It was quite the unusual day for Trout, who didn’t have anything close to a hard-hit ball. His exit velocities on a liner, a grounder and two shallow flies were 82, 64, 78 and 73 mph, but that was good enough for his first four-hit game since Apr. 26, 2021, when he went 4-for-5 against the Rangers. He last went 4-for-4 on Aug. 15, 2019 against the White Sox. The performance raised his average from .237 to .247, which is the highest he’s been since mid-May.

Soriano gave up three hits, walked three and struck out five. The run came in the fifth after a miscue on what should have been an inning-ending double play. Soriano has rebounded nicely with a 2.74 ERA in four starts this month. He’s due to make his next start at home against Milwaukee.

With the heart of the order coming up, the Angels used Ryan Zeferjahn with a three-run lead in the eighth today. He retired three out of four hitters to set up Sam Bachman for the save chance. Bachman, though, walked two of the three batters he faced, throwing just seven of his 18 pitches for strikes. Farris replaced him and gave up a two-run double to Luis Arraez with two outs before striking out Heliot Ramos to end the game. Both runs were charged to Bachman, of course. Farris’s first save came in his 22nd relief appearance this year. Zeferjahn still looks like the favorite for saves in Anaheim right now.

He struck out seven, but Jorge Soler and Jo Adell homered off him in a three-run fourth inning. Whisenhunt, who was recalled before the game, took his first loss after winning each of his previous two starts this year. He seems likely to stick in the San Francisco rotation this time around and face the Padres next weekend.

Soler hustled and barely beat out a potential inning-ending double play to plate a run in the first and then homered in the fourth. The Angels would like to see him put together a little hot streak here and give himself a little value before the trade deadline. If no one proves interested in him, which seems likely with him hitting .202/.288/.374 to date, he’ll probably be looking at a reduced role down the stretch.
