Ryan Feltner allows five runs in loss to Brewers

It was Feltner’s first outing since being scratched last weekend due to illness. He allowed just one run over his first four innings, but surrendered three in the fifth in another mediocre — at best — outing for a pitcher that makes plenty of them. He’ll take an ERA of 5.91 into a scheduled start against the Yankees in New York next week. Steer clear.

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer told reporters Feltner got sick overnight but they’re hoping he’ll be available to pitch in relief. It’ll be Zach Agnos kicking off a bullpen game for the Rockies instead. The 29-year-old righty holds a lackluster 6.08 ERA across 97 2/3 innings of work this season.

Feltner was in control early on before the wheels came off the metaphorical wagon in the middle innings. He was tagged for five runs in the fifth and didn’t make it out of the ensuing frame after putting a pair of runners on-base before departing. He struck out six and also issued four walks. He gave up six hits, but none of them wound up leaving the ballpark. He’s struggled to an inflated 6.08 ERA across 97 2/3 innings this season. He’ll square off against the Braves in a tough road matchup on Saturday.

Two hits and a sacrifice fly put a run on the board for the Dodgers in the first inning. Shohei Ohtani later took him deep for a two-run homer in the third. The Dodgers then started the fourth with three straight doubles to score two runs and added one more before the inning was over. After a scoreless fifth, Feltner allowed a leadoff triple in the sixth and would depart at 83 pitches. He struck out three. The 29-year-old right-hander will take a 5.97 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and a 64/39 K/BB ratio across 92 innings into a start against the Nationals on Monday.

It took a few tightrope acts, but Feltner pitched well enough to win here with ample support from his offense. Still, he didn’t have a single clean inning and forced just six swings-and-misses. He’s only worth a desperation stream outside of Coors Field and is scheduled to face the Dodgers at home next time out.

Enjoying a start outside of Coors Field, Feltner was moderately effective here. He did a good job of not giving up too much dangerous contact – many of the balls in play against him were either lazy fly balls or hit on the ground – to limit damage despite not forcing many whiffs. He’ll take a 5.71 ERA into another start on the road next week against the Diamondbacks.

He struck out three, all on his changeup. Feltner had lost three starts in a row, giving up 17 earned runs over 11 2/3 innings in the process. This makes him 4-6 with a 5.75 ERA overall, and he’ll pitch in St. Louis next.

Feltner gave up two homers, and both were three-run shots off the 29-year-old. It’s another lackluster outing for a pitcher that has provided plenty of them, but this was certainly as bad as Feltner has pitched over the last month plus. He’ll be completely off the fantasy radar for a scheduled start next weekend in Milwaukee against the Brewers.

Getting pushed back a day to face the Giants, rather than the Dodgers, seemed like a good thing for Feltner, but it wound up not really mattering. He gave up solo homers in the first and fourth innings and then four hits and a walk before leaving in the fifth. Fortunately for Feltner, Victor Vodnik was able to strand the bases loaded after coming in with one out in the frame. Feltner will enter the second half 3-3 with a 4.55 ERA. That’s pretty good for a Coors pitcher, but his 47/24 K/BB in 63 1/3 innings isn’t impressive at all. He’s also given up 11 homers already.

Feltner probably won’t mind, since he’ll now be facing the Giants, rather than the Dodgers. It’ll be Hughes’ first major league start after he debuted with three scoreless innings for a save in 15-3 game last Friday.
