Taylor Walls (finger) remains out of the Rays’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Guardians.

It’s the fourth straight game that Walls has missed after hyperextending a couple of fingers on his left hand on Wednesday. He’s still considered day-to-day and isn’t expected to require a trip to the injured list. Ben Williamson will once again start at shortstop in his absence and will bat sixth against Guardians’ left-hander Parker Messick.

Williamson had been shelved since early August due to a right hamstring strain. Before landing on the injured list, he had slashed .247/.309/.332 with three homers, 26 RBI and eight stolen bases over his 270 plate appearances. Jake Fraley was designated for assignment in a corresponding move on Sunday.

Rays activated SS Taylor Walls (hip flexor) from the 10-day injured list

Walls was put on the injured list on September 8th and said it would be a minimum stay. He wound up being right. He will return to his role as the regular shortstop, hitting ninth on Thursday against the Athletics, which moves Jorge Mateo out of the starting lineup.

Gavin Lux (shoulder) and Ben Williamson (hamstring) took live batting practice on Friday.

It’s been an injury-plagued, lost season for Lux, who has yet to make his Tampa Bay debut due to an avalanche of shoulder and hip issues. Williamson hit the injured list with a hamstring strain back in early August. They’re both going to require rehab assignments with Triple-A Durham, but should be ready in time for the Rays’ upcoming playoff run.

Rays placed INF Taylor Walls on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to September 6, with a right hip flexor strain.

Walls expressed optimism while speaking to reporters that it’ll be a minimum stay on the injured list. The 30-year-old defensive specialist’s absence creates some issues for the AL East-leading Rays heading towards postseason as they’ll turn to journeyman Jorge Mateo as a temporary stopgap. They have former top prospect Carson Williams stationed at Triple-A Durham, but he simply hasn’t shown enough at the plate in the majors to be a realistic option.

Taylor Walls is not in the Rays’ starting lineup for Thusday night’s battle against the Rangers.

It appears to be just a routine night off for the Rays’ shortstop. Jorge Mateo is set to start in his place and could wind up running wild against Rangers’ right-hander Cal Quantrill given his struggles to hold baserunners.

Jorge Mateo is starting at shortstop and batting eighth for the Rays on Wednesday against the Tigers.

Since coming to Tampa Bay, Mateo has played exclusively against left-handed pitching, but he will get a start against a righty here. Mateo is just 3-for-17 in his seven games with the Rays and is unlikely to push Taylor Walls for the starting shortstop job.

Taylor Walls went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI in the Rays’ 12-4 win over the Athletics on Tuesday.

Walls enjoyed an excellent day at the plate, starting with a two-run homer off Mason Barnett in the fourth inning. He then went yard again for a solo blast in the sixth. It’s an incredibly rare occurrence, as the two home runs were the first two of the season for the 30-year-old infielder. Walls is hitting .216/.305/.300 with 46 runs scored, 28 RBI, and 18 steals across 336 plate appearances.

Taylor Walls (back) returned to the Rays’ starting lineup for Sunday’s tilt against the Mariners.

Walls was a late scratch from Saturday’s lineup due to lower back tightness, but he’s feeling much improved after an off day. The 30-year-old is back in there at shortstop and batting ninth against Mariners’ right-hander Emerson Hancock on Sunday afternoon in Seattle.

No word yet from the Jays on what may have happened, but Guerrero was replaced when the Jays took the field in the bottom of the fourth inning. He had been 1-for-2 with a single prior to exiting. Look for the team to provide an update on his status as soon as more information becomes available.

Roberts also noted that the plan will be for him to play in every game once he does return, as he needs the at-bats to get ready for the postseason.
