Braves send Brewer Hicklen back to the minors

This means Brewer Hicklen will remain with the team after being the 27th man for the doubleheader. Jarvis had been starting at shortstop for the Braves for much of the summer, but his playing time had lessened in recent weeks, and the production simply hasn’t been there. Mauricio Dubon will take over as the primary shortstop in Atlanta for the remainder of the season.

Hicklen is back for a day after spending the last four weeks in Triple-A. He has hit .368 (7-for-19) with four doubles, three RBI and an 8/4 K/BB ratio in his limited action with the Braves this season.

The 30-year-old rookie and Huntsville, Alabama native Hicklen is becoming a bit of a folk hero. He and fellow bottom of the order mate Jim Jarvis hit back-to-back doubles in the ninth inning that helped catalyze a six-run Braves rally which won them the game. He scorched that double at 104 mph and had another batted ball at 100 mph earlier. After being called up 10 days ago, this was his fifth start out of seven games and his second consecutive start even after incumbent right fielder Mike Yastrzemski was activated off the injured list. This hot stretch will likely be short lived with Ronald Acuña Jr. due back soon, but Hicklen has made his presence felt during this opportunity.

Hicklen gets the call to join Atlanta’s outfield mix just prior to the All-Star break with Mike Yastrzemski landing on the injured list with elbow inflammation. The 30-year-old has appeared in 10 games between the Tigers, Brewers and Royals since 2022.

Hicklen could have opted out of his deal with Atlanta, but the 30-year-old is now on the 40-man roster. He’s having an impressive season in the International League, as he’s hit 316/.381/.519 in Gwinnett with 11 homers and 21 stolen bases. He could be a bench option for the Braves by the end of 2026.

Hicklen bolsters Atlanta’s outfield depth behind Ronald Acuña Jr., Michael Harris II and Jurickson Profar heading into next season after spending time with the Phillies, Tigers and Brewers this past season. The 29-year-old got into one contest for Detroit and picked up his first big-league hit during that one. He’s likely ticketed for Triple-A Gwinnett, but figures to compete for a bench spot in spring training.

Hicklen had been designated for assignment earlier in the week but he passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as extra outfield depth for the Phillies for the time being. The 29-year-old has hit .221/.318/.403 with 16 homers, 56 RBI and 25 stolen bases in 340 plate appearances at the Triple-A level on the season.

Hicklen loses his spot on Philadelphia’s 40-man roster with the club needing to bring up infielder Rafael Lantigua as emergency infield depth. The 29-year-old has spent the last few weeks at Triple-A Lehigh Valley after coming over from the Tigers in a late-July trade.
