Matthew Liberatore surrendered three runs and eight hits while lasting only 3 2/3 innings Monday against the Cubs.

Liberatore has given up 35 runs — 30 earned — in just 40 2/3 innings over his last nine starts, taking his ERA from 4.35 to 5.26. With the Cardinals currently possessing six starters for five spots, a bullpen demotion for Liberatore wouldn’t be a bad idea. However, it’s quite possible they’ll be trading one starter, most likely Dustin May, to alleviate the logjam. If Liberatore stays in the rotation, he’ll face the Blue Jays this weekend.
Trade deadline moves set to shake up AL East race
The AL East was one of baseball's busiest divisions leading up to Monday's trade deadline, leaving CC Sabathia to assess how the Rays and Yankees stack up following their respective moves.

Nationals placed OF James Wood on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

Wood has been diagnosed with a mild oblique strain, which means his absence will likely be on the shorter end of the spectrum. However, he’s likely to remain on the shelf until at least mid-to-late August. The 23-year-old rising star suffered the injury on an awkward swing during the sixth inning of Monday’s game against the Phillies. It’s a colossal loss for the Nationals, and fantasy managers, as Wood has delivered top-five overall fantasy value this season, slashing .265/.393/.535 with 100 runs scored, 30 homers, 73 RBI and 17 stolen bases across 535 plate appearances in 114 games. There should be a definitive return timetable once Wood is cleared to resume baseball activities.

Brewers optioned RHP Garrett Stallings to Triple-A Nashville.

Stallings heads back to the minors with trade deadline acquisitions Dustin May and Antonio Senzatela being officially added to Milwaukee’s active roster. The 28-year-old righty has posted nine strikeouts across eight scoreless frames over four relief appearances for the Brewers. He’s deserving of an extended opportunity at the highest level based on his results so far.

Brewers optioned RHP Brandon Sproat to Triple-A Nashville.

Sproat loses his spot in Milwaukee’s rotation with Kyle Harrison back from the injured list in addition to starter Dustin May coming over from the Cardinals at the trade deadline. The writing was on the wall after he surrendered four runs over three innings against the Pirates on Monday night. There’s a chance he’s back as a multi-inning reliever, where his stuff would presumably play up in shorter bursts. There was some thought from scouts and evaluators during his minor-league career that he would excel in a relief role.

The Guardians will move Slade Cecconi to the bullpen to open up a rotation spot for Foster Griffin.

This was pretty obvious, but now it’s confirmed. Cecconi, who is out of options, had a 7.94 ERA in July and is 4-7 with a 4.78 ERA in 21 starts overall. The Guardians had to be thinking about bumping him even if they didn’t acquire a starter.

Foster Griffin will make his Guardians debut against the Mets on Thursday.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt confirmed that Slade Cecconi will move to the bullpen with Tanner Bibee starting in his place on Wednesday. Griffin came over from the Nationals in a five-player swap at the trade deadline earlier this week. The 31-year-old southpaw has posted a strong 3.06 ERA and 116/30 K/BB ratio across 129 innings in his return to the majors after three seasons pitching overseas in Japan.

Guardians optioned RHP Franco Aleman to Triple-A Columbus.

Following a nice stretch 10-appearance stretch after his recall, Aleman gave up four runs while getting just two outs in his last two outings. He still had a 3.77 ERA overall, but he’ll head to Triple-A for now to help make room for Foster Griffin and Craig Yoho.

José Ramírez is out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Mets with left wrist inflammation.

It sounds like there’s optimism that Ramírez won’t miss too much time, but that’s hardly ever a guarantee. It’s the same wrist that he underwent hamate surgery on earlier this summer. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. There should be some additional clarity on his status later this week.

Orioles manager Craig Albernaz said that Samuel Basallo could go on a rehab assignment within the next two weeks.

Basallo has yet to start hitting or throwing from the catcher position, so he hasn’t really tested his shoulder yet. He might make it back for the final 7-10 days of August if all goes well, but time will tell.

Mets designated RHP Bryce Conley for assignment.

The 31-year-old Conley, a career minor leaguer, was an emergency callup for the Mets on Sunday in case they started trading pitchers and needed the spare arm. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to pitch before losing his spot.

Bryce Harper is making his season debut in right field Tuesday against the Nationals.

It’s the first time he’s played the outfield since Apr. 16, 2022. Harper is expected to be eased into right field, so expect him to continue to make some starts at first for now.
