Braves activated RHP AJ Smith-Shawver from the 60-day injured list.

He’ll serve as the 27th man and start Game 1 in Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Mets. By using him as the 27th man, the Braves won’t need to wait 15 days to recall him from the minors. That likely means that he will head back to Triple-A after this start so that the Braves can keep another reliever. We would then fully expect Smith-Shawver to come back up and join the rotation full time for his next start.
Chourio's star is 'burning unbelievably bright'
Jackson Chourio continues to shine for the Milwaukee Brewers, as the 22-year-old's playoff heroics are only fueling his fantasy baseball hype heading into next season.

Thomas was dealing with an intercostal strain and left off the Wild Card roster by Atlanta for their series against the Phillies. He, AJ Smith-Shawver and JR Ritchie are the new editions; while Dominic Smith, DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and Luke Williams have been taken off.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #32
Smith-Shawver has posted an inflated 7.71 ERA across 21 innings over five starts since making it back from last year’s Tommy John surgery in late July. The 23-year-old’s stuff should play up considerably in shorter bursts out of the bullpen and he figures to make Atlanta’s postseason roster. It’s unclear how the Braves are going to fill his rotation spot since he was lined up to face the Cubs on Wednesday.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #32
Smith-Shawver gave up five hits, walked two and struck out three. He fell to 0-2 in five starts with a 7.71 ERA. Smith-Shawver hasn’t shown fantasy managers that he has much to offer in this tour of the big leagues. He’s lined up to face the Cubs on the road next week.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #32
Smith-Shawver gave up six hits, walked three and struck out five. He fell to 0-1 in four starts with a 7.13 ERA. Smith-Shawver can safely be left on the waiver wire in mixed leagues for now. He’s lined up to face the Rays at home next week.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #32
Smith-Shawver’s velocity was up from last week, though it faded quickly; his fastball averaged 97.4 mph in the first, 95.6 mph in the third and 93.8 mph in the fifth, Still, the overall average of 96.1 mph was closer to the 96.8 mph he averaged in Triple-A than last week’s 95.0 mph against the Twins. Smith-Shawver ended up with three strikeouts and three walks tonight. It was a more promising showing than last week’s, but it wasn’t the kind of performance that suggests he needs to be picked up right now in mixed leagues. He’ll probably face the Nationals next week.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #32
Smith-Shawver averaged 96.8 mph with his fastball during his seven Triple-A starts and 97.2 mph in his one start for the Braves last month, but he didn’t show that kind of stuff today. He averaged 95.0 mph with his 20 fastballs, and the 31 splitters he threw were 2.8 mph slower than they were a few weeks ago. Maybe it was a one-time blip, but if not, he’s going to be a whole lot less interesting down the stretch. He’s supposed to stay in the rotation and face the Dodgers next week.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #32
Now it’s official. Smith-Shawver will come back up to start for the Braves on Wednesday after he was removed from Triple-A Gwinnett’s probable pitchers earlier today. He’s a splitter-heavy righty with above average velocity who could find success. In his season debut against the Mets, his fastball jumped up two ticks to 97 mph and that velocity held during his two starts back in Triple-A. He’s also mixed in a new sinker against right-handed batters. By slotting in the rotation on Wednesday, he’ll give Chris Sale an extra day of rest.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #32
Bowman reports that Herick Hernandez is meant to start for Triple-A Gwinnett tonight now in lieu of Smith-Shawver, which would free him up to be recalled and pitch in the big leagues tomorrow. Rumored to return to the majors since his season debut against the Mets three weeks ago, he has 13 strikeouts, four walks, and allowed two earned runs over 11 innings in two starts since. He’d be moderately interesting if or when he’s formally promoted.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #32
Smith-Shawver has allowed just two runs while recording a 13/4 K/BB ratio across 11 innings in a pair of starts since being sent back to Triple-A Gwinnett in late July. He allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings during his season debut back on July 29. Weiss added that he doesn’t want to move to a six-man rotation, so they’re going to have to make a decision with the rest of their established arms before bringing Smith-Shawver back in the near future. He’s worthy of a speculative roster spot in deeper mixed leagues based on his prospect pedigree and recent performance.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #32
The Braves are going to have some tough decisions to make in the near future since Smith-Shawver has spent more than 15 days back in the minors since being demoted last month. The 23-year-old former top prospet could make his next start for Atlanta early next week, depending on how they want to construct their rotation for the final six weeks of the season. He’s looked sharp in his return from last year’s Tommy John surgery and is worthy of a speculative stash in deeper mixed leagues.

Braden Montgomery delivered a go-ahead two-run double to propel the White Sox to a 4-3 win over the Guardians in Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday.

Montgomery put Chicago ahead for good by slicing an opposite-field double down the right-field line against Cleveland reliever Erik Sabrowski in the sixth inning. It was his lone hit in four at-bats, but it came at an opportune moment in the low-scoring affair at Progressive Field. The 23-year-old former first-round pick is just 3-for-15 to open the postseason. With the victory, the White Sox have a chance to punch their ticket to the ALCS when they host the Guardians for Game 3 at Rate Field on Wednesday night.

José Ramírez went 0-for-3 in a Game 2 loss to the White Sox on Monday.

Ramírez, who did manage to walk and score a run in this one, has gone 0-for-6 with three strikeouts during the first two contests of the best-of-five series. The Guardians have mustered just three runs on seven hits combined during that span. They’ll attempt to stave off elimination when the series shifts to Chicago for Game 3 on Wednesday evening.

Grant Taylor recorded a four-out save in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Guardians on Monday.

After tossing four shutout frames to close out Game 1 over the weekend, Taylor was summoned to protect a two-run lead with two outs in the eighth inning after Sean Burke gave up a two-out single to Chase DeLauter. He immediately surrendered an RBI triple to Jo Adell, but managed to retire Nathaniel Lowe to keep the lead intact heading to the ninth. He needed just five pitches to set down Angel Martínez, Travis Bazzana and Patrick Bailey in the final frame to give Chicago a commanding 2-0 advantage in the best-of-five series. The hard-throwing 24-year-old reliever has yet to allow a run while striking out 11 batters over seven innings of work this postseason. He’s arguably been the difference in the series through two games. Unreal.

Sean Burke was charged with one run over 5 1/3 innings to pick up a win in relief against the Guardians in Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday.

Burke took over after Anthony Kay and Sean Newcomb allowed two runs and recorded seven outs to open the contest and didn’t allow a hit until Chase DeLauter singled with two outs in the eighth inning. The 26-year-old righty, who was arguably Chicago’s best starter during the regular season, has allowed four runs with a 14/1 K/BB ratio across 9 1/3 innings of work in a pair of postseason outings.

Gavin Williams recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed two runs over five innings against the White Sox in Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday.

Williams led the majors with 11 double-digit strikeout performances during the regular season and became the first Cleveland starter to accomplish the feat in a playoff setting since Bartolo Colon back in 2001. His 11 punchouts were one shy of the franchise record set by Charles Nagy back in 1996. He piled up 22 swinging strikes on 98 pitches, allowing just seven baserunners over five impressive frames. He looked like he was going to get in trouble when White Sox rookie sensation Munetaka Murakami smacked an RBI single in the fourth inning. However, he managed to get out of the frame without any further damage. He was charged with an additional run when Cleveland’s bullpen allowed an inherited runner to cross the plate in the sixth. He figures to get the ball for a decisive Game 5 matchup, if the series gets to that point.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start Game 3 of the NLDS against the Braves on Tuesday.

Yamamoto said through an interpreter that he’s willing to pitch on short rest, or in relief, if needed, this postseason. That doesn’t come as a surprise after witnessing his herculean effort during last year’s World Series title run. He’ll get the ball for a pivotal showdown at Truist Park in Atlanta with the best-of-five series tied after a pair of games in Los Angeles.

Padres signed RHP Roel Ramírez to a minor league contract.

Ramírez hasn’t pitched in the majors since making two relief appearances from the Cardinals from 2020-2021. The 31-year-old journeyman hasn’t pitched in affiliated ball since the 2023 campaign. He posted a spectacular 1.76 ERA with a 63/9 K/BB ratio across 46 innings for Tijuana in the independent Mexican League this past season.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Max Fried will likely start Game 3 of the ALDS against the Rays on Wednesday.

Boone seemingly left the door ajar for New York to pivot, adding that Carlos Rodón is in line to start a potential Game 4 matchup. All signs point to Fried toeing the rubber when the series heads back to New York later this week. The 32-year-old southpaw allowed one run over six innings against the Red Sox to close out the AL Wild Card Series last Wednesday. It’ll be Fried’s 16th career postseason start and 24th appearance overall since 2018.

Rays manager Kevin Cash confirmed that Nick Martinez will start Game 3 of the ALDS against the Yankees on Wednesday.

Martinez will be making his first career postseason start in Yankee Stadium after making eight relief appearances since 2022. The 36-year-old veteran was a bit of an unexpected revelation in his Rays debut, posting a career-best 3.10 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 109/26 K/BB ratio across 180 innings over 31 regular-season starts.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is at second base and hitting sixth against the Rays in Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone is sticking with the same lineup that was shutout by Rays ace Drew Rasmussen, who carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning, and closer Bryan Baker in a Game 1 defeat. It’ll be eight left-handed batters getting a look at Freddy Peralta as he makes his Tampa Bay postseason debut in this one. Here’s the full lineup: Ben Rice (DH), Cody Bellinger (LF), Luis García Jr. (1B), Spencer Jones (RF), George Lombard Jr. (SS), Chisholm (2B), Trent Grisham (CF), Austin Wells (C) and Ryan McMahon (3B).
