Gabriel Hughes yielded three runs in five innings Wednesday in a loss to the Padres.

Hughes’s fastball and sinker were down 1.5-2 mph today, with his hardest pitch of the game checking in at 93.1 mph. He still managed to hold his own against the Padres, but he wound up with just two strikeouts and a poor 18 percent CSW. Let’s hope that isn’t a sign of things to come, because he’d been quite impressive since arriving at the beginning of the month. He’s due to face the Rays at Coors next week.
Trade deadline moves set to shake up AL East race
The AL East was one of baseball's busiest divisions leading up to Monday's trade deadline, leaving CC Sabathia to assess how the Rays and Yankees stack up following their respective moves.

The Red Sox are going to roll with Eli White and Jahmai Jones as their lefty-mashing specialists, in addition to Nick Sogard seeing regular time at second base, with Gonzalez going to the minors in the wake of their trade deadline moves. The 29-year-old infielder has hit just .185 (12-for-65) with one homer, seven RBI and one steal in 19 games this season.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro told reporters Luinder Avila and Stephen Kolek will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgeries.

It’s a massive hit to Kansas City’s rotation depth beyond just the current season. Avila emerged as a decent back-end rotation stabilizer before hitting the injured list with forearm tightness over the weekend. Given the timing of the procedures, fantasy managers shouldn’t anticipate either Avila or Kolek returning until the 2028 campaign.

Carlos Rodón (elbow) will make his first minor league rehab start on Saturday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Rodón is finally ready to return to game action after working his way back from elbow inflammation that put him on the injured list back in early July. The 33-year-old southpaw will likely need a handful of outings before he’s an option for New York’s rotation mix later this month.

Christian Yelich hitting seventh on Tuesday against the Pirates

Brewers manager Pat Murphy told reporters they’re moving Yelich down in an effort to generate a spark and get things trending in a different direction. It’ll be Jake Bauers moving up to the third spot in front of cleanup hitter William Contreras to face Pirates starter Jared Jones. Yelich has been ice-cold since last month’s All-Star break, hitting .192 (10-for-52) with one homer in 13 games.

Diamondbacks placed C Gabriel Moreno on the paternity list.

Moreno will be away from the club for a couple days on paternity leave. The 26-year-old backstop has consistently batted in the heart of Arizona’s lineup, slashing .298/.380/.438 with eight homers, 47 RBI and four steals in 350 plate appearances this season. It feels strange to call him underrated, but Moreno has graded out as a top-10 fantasy catcher so far.

Rays optioned C Kenny Piper to Double-A Montgomery.

Piper made the most of his one-game big-league opportunity, collecting his first career hit during Monday’s contest at Coors Field. It was a special moment that he’ll never forget. The 28-year-old backstop heads back to the minors with Liam Hicks arriving from the Marlins at the trade deadline.

Marlins recalled C/DH Agustín Ramírez from Triple-A Jacksonville.

It’s become a lot less challenging to forecast Ramírez from a playing time standpoint after Miami jettisoned Liam Hicks at the trade deadline. The 24-year-old has zero shot at reclaiming the starting catcher role given his defensive shortcomings, especially now that defensive wizard Joe Mack is firmly entrenched in the role. However, he figures to see enough time between first base and DH to matter for fantasy purposes. There have never really been a ton of questions regarding his offensive ability and having less competition for at-bats should help Ramírez tremendously.
