Riley O’Brien available Wednesday vs. Cubs

With the save, O’Brien is now up to 30 on the year. He didn’t allow a hit, and picked up a strikeout while lowering his ERA to 3.14 on the year. A 40-save campaign is within reach if the Cardinals get hot.

O’Brien got a 100-mph lineout to left, a 103-mph groundout and then an 88-mph liner to left that required an excellent diving catch from Everson Pereira. It’s his seventh straight scoreless appearance, and he’s now tied with Mason Miller for the NL lead in saves.

O’Brien made us sweat with a lead-off walk to start the ninth inning in a one run game, but immediately forced Kyle Karros to hit into a double play and neutralize the threat. His 28 saves are tied with Mason Miller for third-most in the league trailing only Bryan Baker and Cade Smith. He’s also only allowed two earned runs since the start of July in what’s turned into a standout season.

The Cardinals never had a late-inning lead in the 10-inning loss to the Reds, but it was surprising not to see O’Brien in the tie game at some point. As it turned out, there was a good reason. Consider him day-to-day.

O’Brien got the call to protect a narrow one-run lead in the final frame and made things interesting by putting the potential tying and winning runs on-base with only one out in the frame. He got into a jam by walking Jo Adell and Wade Mecker, but managed to pull off the high-wire act by striking out Oswald Peraza and Josh Lowe to extinguish the threat. It was a nice rebound performance after blowing a save earlier in the series.

O’Brien had seemingly bounced back from his struggles in May and June, but this was a disaster. With one out, he gave up a single and hit a batter before allowing a double/near-home run to Vaughn Grissom that should have ended the game, except pinch-runner Jose Siri somehow failed to score from first. After that came in an intentional walk to Josh Lowe to load the bases, followed by four straight balls to Jo Adell. The last of those get Adell in the elbow, so it was officially a game-ending HBP, rather than a game-ending walk. O’Brien entered tonight having pitched eight consecutive scoreless innings and converted 11 straight save chances, so his gig is safe for now.

O’Brien walked Nolan Arenado to open the bottom of the ninth, only to pick off pinch-runner Jorge Barrosa afterwards. He later gave up a double to Tim Tawa with two outs, but it proved harmless. It goes as O’Brien’s eighth straight scoreless appearance.

O’Brien’s save was his 24th. He pitched around a walk to put up a scoreless ninth inning while recording a strikeout. O’Brien hasn’t been scored on in his last seven innings, lowering his ERA to 3.43.

O’Brien has bounced back with six scoreless innings in a row over the last couple of weeks. He posted a 6.88 ERA with 10 walks and four hit batters in 17 innings from the beginning of May through June 21.

It’s a colossal bummer for baseball fans hoping to see Misiorowski hurling triple-digit heaters during next week’s Midsummer Classic, but this was always the expected outcome here. Skenes, Misorowski and Meyer are all taking the ball for their respective club’s first-half finales on Sunday, which means there was zero chance they would be able to pitch in the All-Star Game just three days later. Luzardo, Ashcraft and O’Brien are headed to the game for the first time in their respective careers. It’s likely going to be Shohei Ohtani taking the ball to start for the National League based on how things are lining up from a schedule standpoint.
