Report: Edwards “has the Red Sox’s attention”

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that Xavier Edwards “also has the [Red] Sox’s attention.”

The Red Sox seem to prefer Otto Lopez and prefer to add a shortstop at the deadline, but Red Sox assistant general manager Taylor Smith was previously with the Rays and was instrumental in acquiring Xavier Edwards from them previously. Edwards lacks the arm to play shortstop, but he has played there in the past and could help until Trevor Story or Marcelo Mayer are back from their injuries. Edwards is hitting .292/.373/.401 this season with six home runs, 18 steals, and elite contact metrics at the plate. He’d also likely cost less to acquire than Otto Lopez.
McClanahan could go on short IL stint
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane McClanahan left his last start early with back tightness and Eric Samulski thinks a short trip to the IL is in the cards to let him rest for a potential trip to the postseason.

Pirates recalled RHP Antwone Kelly from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Kelly has a 10.38 ERA in two appearances for the Pirates this year, but it’s a fresh arm’s game and the 22-year-old will join the pen after Hunter Barco threw 73 pitches last night.

Phillies optioned Brian Keller to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Keller threw three innings against the Yankees on June 25 and hadn’t been used since. It’s an incredible story that he made it to the big leagues for the first time in his age-32 season after missing the 2024 and 2025 calendar years, but the Phillies weren’t exactly using him of late so the demotion makes sense.

Phillies recalled RHP Andrew Painter from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Painter didn’t exactly figure it out at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he had a 4.56 RA and 25 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings over five starts. We wouldn’t be looking for a reason to start Painter in his return to the bigs tonight, though it’s certainly possible the Phillies can outbludgeon the Orioles.

Blue Jays optioned LHP Adam Macko to Triple-A Buffalo.

Macko is the lifeblood of our world. The planet bleeds green like you and me bleed red. Unfortunately the Jays considered him expendable as he had a 4.91 ERA in 22 innings while striking out 23. He’ll likely bounce back to the big-league staff at some point in the near future — he’s already been called up three times this year.

Jays activated RHP Braydon Fisher from the bereavement list.

Fisher holds a 4.15 ERA and a 52/26 K/BB ratio over 52 innings in the bigs this year, while occasionally serving as an opener.

Blue Jays optioned OF Yohendrick Piñango to Triple-A Buffalo.

Piñango hit .260/.306/.396 in 180 plate appearances for the Jays this year, almost all of which was against right-handed pitching. He returns to a .272/.357/.472 line in Buffalo. The 24-year-old will await his next opportunity in the International League.

Blue Jays activated Jesús Sánchez off the 10-day injured list.

Sánchez wound up missing a month and a few days with an ankle sprain suffered on June 27. He’ll likely return to platoon COF duties in the place of the optioned Yohendrick Piñango.

Mets recalled RHP Xzavion Curry from Triple-A Syracuse.

With Freddy Peralta scratched tonight, the Mets are stacking the bullpen for a game of Oops! All Bulk Relievers. Curry allowed two runs in six inning with the Mets earlier this year.

Mets recalled RHP Jonathan Pintaro from Triple-A Syracuse.

“Oh yeah, that guy,” they thought. Pintaro holds a 5.11 ERA and has mostly been used as a multi-inning reliever for the Mets this year — he did give up six earned runs in his last two MLB appearances and had been doing better before that.

Mets placed LHP Cionel Pérez on the 15-day injured list with a left forearm strain.

The well-traveled lefty was 2-0 with a 4.21 ERA in 25 2/3 innings with the Mets, striking out 32 over that timespan. Pérez will be out of commission for at least the next two weeks and possibly longer.
