Guardians designated INF Gabriel Arias for assignment.

This is a bit of a shocker. Arias is 26 years old and has slashed .219/.275/.359 in 1,168 MLB plate appearances, so he has had plenty of opportunities. However, he also has a career 10 percent barrel rate and 43 percent hard-hit rate with a 75 mph bat speed and 90.3 mph average exit velocity. He has also been an average to above-average defender at second base, third base, and shortstop. There has been far too much swing and miss in his game, but it would not surprise us if somebody claims him on waivers and tries to see if they can help him remedy that.

Cubs claimed INF Gabriel Arias off waivers from the Mets.

Arias makes a ton of sense for Chicago as a short-term stopgap solution to help fill their infield while Dansby Swanson (oblique) is on the injured list for the next couple weeks. The 26-year-old provides the Cubs with an experienced and versatile infield option behind Nico Hoerner and Pedro Ramírez. He can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats, but still represents a quality depth addition at this stage of his career.

Mets designated INF Gabriel Arias for assignment.

Why did they even claim him in the first place? Arias got one start and made one appearance off the bench during his 10 days with the Mets, going 0-for-5. He’ll stay in the organization if he clears waivers, but it’s just not going to make sense for the Mets to give him another chance in September when they have the similar-but-more-talented Ronny Mauricio ready to take those at-bats. Arias offers ample pop for a middle infielder, but poor plate discipline has held him back in a big way.

Mets claimed INF Gabriel Arias off waivers from the Guardians.

It seems likely that he’ll eventually be on the 26-man roster. Arias had a 0.5 WAR in 134 plate appearances for the Guardians, but is the rare right-handed hitter who struggled mightily against left-handed pitching, hitting .171/.224/.295 against southpaws in his career as compared to .243/.301/.392 against right-handers.

Chase DeLauter is on the bench for Saturday’s showdown against the Rays.

It’s strange to see DeLauter taking a seat against a right-handed starter, especially since he’s hitting .344 (11-for-32) with four RBI and two steals in eight games since the All-Star break. With Angel Martínez back in right field, it’ll be rookie Travis Bazzana at DH with Gabriel Arias handling second base on Saturday evening.

Gabriel Arias went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in a win over the Twins on Tuesday.

Arias had the two hardest-hit balls of the game with a 108 mph single in the fourth inning and a 111.1 mph single in the sixth. It’s been a good month for Arias, who is now 12-for-40 (.300) with two home runs, seven runs scored, four RBI, and three steals in 14 games. The problem is that it also comes with a 19/3 K/BB ratio. Arias has loud raw tools, but the plate approach will always make him risky in fantasy leagues.

Gabriel Arias went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two steals in Cleveland’s 4-1 win over the Marlins on Saturday.

Arias had a solid day at the plate, starting with a base hit and a stolen base in the second inning. He then singled, stole a base, and scored a run in the fourth before collecting his third hit to lead off the sixth. The 26-year-old infielder is hitting .239/.280/.432 with five homers and three steals across 93 plate appearances.

Arias has now sat in two straight games after starting four of the previous five. The 26-year-old has gone just 4-for-22 since being activated off the 60-day IL with a 13/0 K/BB rate in five games. Daniel Schneemann will start at third base and bat seventh.

The 26-year-old infielder had been shelved since early April due to a left hamstring strain. He figures to share time at third base with Daniel Schneemann for the next month while José Ramírez (wrist) is sidelined. Before landing on the injured list, Arias was hitting .200/.250/.433 with a pair of homers and four RBI in his first 32 plate appearances.

Guardians placed 3B José Ramírez on 10-day injured list with a fractured left hamate bone.

The 33-year-old superstar suffered the unfortunate injury on a swing during Saturday’s game. He’s expected to miss at least a month’s worth of action and as we have often seen with hamate bone injuries, his power may be impacted upon his return. Gabriel Arias was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move and figures to share time with Daniel Schneemann at third base to cover for the loss of Ramírez.

José Ramírez was diagnosed with a fractured left hamate bone and will go on the injured list.

That’s always the fear when a player starts shaking his wrist after a swing. Ramírez tends to be a quick healer, but he will almost surely miss at least a month. The Guardians are about to get Gabriel Arias back and could put him in the mix along with Daniel Schneemann at third, but prospect Angel Genao could also be an option.

Wade Meckler went 2-for-5 and singled in the winning run in the 10th as the Angels edged the Twins 5-4 on Thursday.

Meckler plated Zach Neto after Mike Trout previously singled to tie the game. The 26-year-old Meckler has a nice .294/.370/.381 line through 299 plate appearances, and unless the Angels go on a major spending spree this winter, one imagines he’ll get a chance to remain the team’s left fielder against right-handers to start 2027.

Walbert Ureña shut out the Twins for seven innings, striking out nine, in a no-decision Thursday against the Twins.

Ureña managing to retain mixed-league value pretty much all year long in a situation as bad for pitchers as the one in Anaheim is one of the top accomplishments from any rookie this year. Not even just rookies, really. Ureña departed with a 3-0 lead tonight, but it failed to hold up, keeping him 9-10 with a 2.74 ERA. He’ll probably make just one more start Wednesday against the A’s.

Ben Joyce took a blown save after giving up a two-run homer in the ninth Thursday against the Twins.

Joyce did strike out three of the five batters he faced tonight, but in between were a single and a homer. It’s his third blown save in eight tries, though one of those was because of two unearned runs in extras. He still figures to finish out the year as the Angels’ closer. He might, however, be less likely to keep that role in 2027 with the pending sale of the Angels.

Pitching for a third straight day after blowing his first save Wednesday, Yoendrys Gómez gave up two runs — one earned — in the 10th to take another blown save and a loss Thursday against the Angels.

If the Twins had it to do over again, one imagines they would have stuck with Jeff Hoffman in the 10th after he got one out in the ninth. Instead, they went back to Gómez, who threw 10 pitches Tuesday and 24 on Wednesday. He walked one and gave up a game-tying hit while getting one out before being replaced. Kody Funderburk then surrendered a game-winning single to Wade Meckler. Gómez was 22-for-22 saving games this season prior to Wednesday’s affair. However, he’s now sporting a 7.54 ERA since the beginning of August.

Walker Jenkins went 3-for-4 and hit a game-tying two-run homer off Ben Joyce in the ninth inning Thursday against the Angels.

Of course, velocity data doesn’t go back all that far. Still, we’re guessing Jenkins set some sort of record for greatest velocity difference on pitches hit for a player’s first two major league homers. Jenkins’ first came off a 37.4-mph “other” from Tigers infielder Zach McKinstry in an Aug. 31 blowout. Tonight’s, however, saw him turn around a 100.9-mph fastball from one of the game’s hardest throwers. The three-hit game made Jenkins 7-for-49 as a big leaguer.

Royce Lewis went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts against the Angels on Thursday.

It just keeps getting more difficult imagining Lewis in a Twins uniform next year, even though it probably wouldn’t cost more than $4 million to keep him in arbitration. Going 3-for-32 in his last nine games has dropped him down to .226/.290/.381 for the season. That’s a .671 OPS, which is also what he finished at last season. Brooks Lee has overtaken him at third base, and he just hasn’t recently shown the kind of bat to justify a starting job at first.

Mets’ manager Andy Green told reporters on Thursday night that they’re hopeful that Jared Young (head) avoided the worst outcomes following a scary collision with Nolan McLean.

While Green noted that Young is still exhibiting concussion symptoms, his CT scan came back negative and he has feelings in all of his extremities. Green also added that Young is “showing really good signs right now”. He’ll remain in the hospital overnight for observation. Expect the Mets to provide another update on his status prior to Friday’s game.

X-rays on the injured hand of Willson Contreras came back negative for any fractures on Thursday.

The 34-year-old slugger was removed from Thursday’s game against the Rangers after he was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning. Fortunately, he appears to have avoided any structural damage. He’s still a bit sore though, so it may depend on how he’s feeling on Friday before the Red Sox determine his availability for the weekend.
