Munetaka Murakami homer helps White Sox top Guardians

Murakami hit his 24th homer of the season in the third inning off of Nick Martinez. His two-run blast pushed the White Sox out to a 4-0 lead and was one of four homers the White Sox managed on the night. After needing a beat to get his timing back, Murakami now has three home runs and an .888 OPS in 15 games since returning from the injured list. That’s also come with a nearly 41% strikeout rate.

Murakami now has 22 home runs this season. He hit a two-run shot off Ronel Blanco in the first inning and a solo shot off Astros reliever Miguel Ullola in the eighth inning. Murakami’s home run was his first since May 27 against the Twins. Entering play Sunday, he was 8-for-42 (.190) with two RBI, 19 strikeouts and 12 walks in his last 13 games. Murakami’s hitting .239 with a .921 OPS and 48 RBI.

Murakami, who signed a two-year, $34 million contract last offseason, made some noise while speaking to Fegan prior to his first Midsummer Classic appearance by confirming his interest in staying with Chicago long-term. This was reported yesterday and is now official. Murakami will return to a .240/.378/.560 slash line with 20 home runs and a 32.5 percent strikeout rate in 57 games. The White Sox can certainly use his power back in the lineup.

Murakami, who has been out since late May, has played two straight games in Triple-A Charlotte. If this report is true, Murakami would get a handful of at-bats this weekend before the All-Star Break hits. Merkin speculates that Jacob Gonzalez being demoted would seem “the likely move.”

Murakami has gone 2-for-7 in a pair of rehab contests since kicking off a rehab assignment earlier this week. He figures to make it back to Chicago’s lineup at some point later this week. He’s been out with a hamstring strain since late May.
