Cade Smith let up two hits and struck out three batters in a four-out save against the Tigers on Wednesday.

Smith let this one get a little too crazy. He entered in a three-run game with two outs in the eighth inning and promptly threw a wild pitch to let one run score. Then, gave up a lead-off single in the ninth to send the tying run to the plate. Gleyber Torres singled after that to put the tying runs on base with Dillon Dingler and Kevin McGonigle due up. Smith turned up the heat in that moment, throwing six fastballs of at least 98 mph – a full tick above his season average – over his last seven pitches to get out of the jam. He has a 2.30 ERA and is second in the league with 31 saves in what’s been a standout season.

Cade Smith worked a hitless ninth for his 30th save in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Reds.

Smith’s velocity was way up again today; he averaged 99.7 mph with his fastball, which is 2.7 mph better than usual. He also averaged 100.0 mph in an appearance a week ago, though he was back down to 97.5 mph on Thursday. Before that, his season-high fastball velocity was 98.6 mph on July 8. Smith is the first pitcher to reach 30 saves this year. He has two more than Bryan Baker and three more than Mason Miller.

Cade Smith pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief against the Twins on Thursday.

No save for Smith, who was summoned with one out in the eighth and allowed a game-tying single to Alan Roden to score one of two inherited runners from Hunter Gaddis. Smith settled in to keep the game tied, but the Guardians didn’t score in the bottom of the eighth or ninth. It only took 22 pitches, so Smith is probably in line to pitch tomorrow if needed.

Smith struck out one and didn’t allow a single baserunner en route to his 29th save of the season. That expands his league lead by four saves over Bryan Baker. It’s been quite a first season as a closer for Smith.

Cade Smith slammed the door on the Marlins on Friday night, working a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a one-run advantage and earn his 28th save of the season.

Smith didn’t mess around in this one, needing just nine pitches (seven strikes) to retire the side in order — getting Liam Hicks on a fly ball to right, Griffin Conine on a pop out to second base and Jakob Marsee on a fly ball to left field to end it. The 27-year-old closer now boasts a 2.70 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and a 61/11 K/BB ratio over 43 1/3 innings while converting 28 of his first 31 save chances.

Smith struck out two and didn’t allow a baserunner. The 27-year-old now has 27 saves in his first year as a full-time closer and looks every bit the part of one of the best closers in the league.

Smith was summoned to close out the game in the ninth inning with a two-run lead after the Guardians scored five runs to take the lead in the eighth. He recorded the first out, then gave up two hits before striking out one batter for the second out. An error would bring a run home and put the tying run at third. Smith then generated a groundout to end the game with his MLB-leading 26th save.

Smith took the loss in a non-save situation on Monday and blew a save on Wednesday. The 27-year-old right-hander was able to bounce back Saturday. Smith allowed two men to reach base before getting Josh Naylor to ground out to end the game. The save was his 25th. Smith has a 3.13 ERA.

Cade Smith blew his third save after giving up back-to-back homers to Braden Montgomery and Randal Grichuk in the ninth inning Wednesday against the White Sox.

Smith ended up being pulled with two outs after allowing a single and a walk following the homers. He’s given up four runs in two appearances against the White Sox over the last three days, taking his ERA from 2.38 to 3.22. He had allowed just one homer in 35 2/3 innings this season coming into the day.

With the Guardians trailing by one on the road, Smith came in and threw a scoreless eighth inning to keep the deficit from growing. After the Guardians took the lead in the top of the ninth inning, Smith was then asked to close the game out as well and ran into trouble. He walked Braden Montgomery with one out before Tristan Peters hit a double. With two outs, Sam Antonacci walked the Guardians off with a two-run single. Smith’s loss was his first of the year. His ERA is 2.78.

Smith entered with two on in the eighth and walked Willson Contreras before striking out Christian Yelich to end the threat. He then retired three of four batters in the ninth. Smith has five more saves than anyone else in the majors. This could be the fourth time in five years that a Guardians reliever has led the AL in saves, as Emmanuel Clase topped the circuit each season from 2022-24.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters that Simeon Woods Richardson will work “in some capacity” during Saturday’s game against the Yankees.

Braydon Fisher is going to get the start against the Yankees on Saturday, but he won’t be able to go more than a turn through the lineup at most. Woods Richardson seems likely to be the bulk hurler for that game, but even with a chance to pick up multiple innings and potentially a win, he offers more risk than reward at this point.

Freeland has allowed three earned runs in his three starts this month, lowering his ERA from 7.34 to 6.27. He’ll make his next start at home against the Dodgers. It’ll be his first time facing them in Coors this year after giving up 14 earned runs over nine innings in two starts in L.A.

He’s slated to pitch in Cleveland next time out.

That the Rockies play six games at home next week would seem to make him an interesting pickup, but, unfortunately, the team is currently slated to face lefties in four of those games and Veen is expected to do a lot of sitting against lefties. Maybe he can change that if he stays hot this weekend.

He even has five steals during the span, which is four more than he had in the first half and two more than he had in 122 games for the Mets last season. As the Athletics’ current leadoff man against righties, he’s worth playing in mixed leagues when the team is at home in West Sacramento.
