Royals optioned RHP Lucas Erceg to Triple-A Omaha.

It’s been quite a fall from grace for Erceg, who still leads the Royals with 12 saves despite being removed from the closer’s role two months ago after blowing four saves in five chances. His fastball velocity has fallen in each of the last two seasons and he’ll head to Triple-A Omaha with an ugly 6.23 ERA, 31 strikeouts, and 29 walks across 43 1/3 innings.

It is notable that the Royals didn’t turn to nominal closer Alex Lange in a save situation after he blew Tuesday’s game. It didn’t work out very well for Matt Quatraro, who had Lucas Erceg load the bases while getting two outs in a 3-0 game and then had Strahm unload them. It’s hard to be confident about any closer emerging here down the stretch, though it’s a bit surprising they haven’t at least dabbled with Daniel Lynch IV in the role since he’s the only Royals reliever who has been appreciably good this year.

Beck Way started the ninth inning with a 6-1 Royals lead. Erceg came in once it was 6-4 with the tying run at the plate and one out. A lineout and RBI single made it 6-5 before another single put the tying run in scoring position. Then Erceg got Brooks Lee to fly out to end the game. Alex Lange, who had three saves in the previous four days, was unavailable.

Erceg walked one, but he also got two easy popups and a strikeout while pitching in a 1-1 game. Just two of his 15 pitches today were four-seamers, which may or may not be an indication that he’s working on his pitch mix. He usually throws the four-seamer about one-third of the time. With Alex Lange getting his third save in four days, Erceg doesn’t seem worth rostering in mixed leagues right now. However, given Lange’s volatility, things could always change again in a hurry.

Lange was called upon after the Royals scored twice in the top half of the ninth inning to take a two-run lead. He made things interesting, allowing a leadoff single to Victor Caratini and a two-out walk to Byron Buxton to put the tying runs on base, but battled back to get Brooks Lee on a ground ball to second base to end the ballgame. It’s his second save in the last three days and could signal that he could be the favorite for save chances going forward with Lucas Erceg continuing to struggle.

Erceg has been given all kinds of runway as the Royals’ closer since Carlos Estévez (shoulder) went down with an injury, but all he’s done is blow game after game for Kansas City. On Tuesday, Erceg was protecting a one-run lead and allowed a game-tying home run to the first batter he faced in Will Benson. He now has six blown saves and a 6.45 ERA to go with his 11 saves. Fantasy managers as well as the Royals have to be considering alternative options at this point.

Erceg was summoned in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game with a two-run lead against the Rangers. He served up a leadoff homer to Joc Pederson, then gave up three straight hits to bring home the winning run. The blown save was his third in his last five outings and gives him a 6.33 ERA over 21 1/3 innings. The Royals may have to consider a change in the ninth, but there aren’t many standout options. John Schreiber and Daniel Lynch IV have been the most effective in the back end of the bullpen and could be relievers to watch.

It’s a bit remarkable that Estévez has been cleared to resume throwing just a couple weeks after being shut down with shoulder discomfort. The 33-year-old’s fastball velocity will be monitored like the raptor pen in Jurassic Park once he heads out on another minor league rehab assignment. There’s a real possibility that he reclaims the closer role in Kansas City if he’s back throwing in the mid-90’s again. That won’t be clear for at least a couple weeks and fantasy managers shouldn’t expect him back until the second half.

We assumed Erceg would be down today after throwing 32 pitches and giving up three runs with a five-run lead in Sunday’s game. The Royals had other ideas. To be fair, Erceg didn’t give up one hard-hit ball today, Two of the singles actually left the bat at less than 40 mph, and the lone extra-base hit, a double from Jazz Chisholm Jr., might have been handled by a better first baseman than Salvador Perez (he’d just replaced Vinnie Pasquantino after Pasquantino was removed for a pinch-runner). With any luck, this probably would have been a clean inning for Erceg. Still, Erceg just isn’t a very good reliever at the moment, what with his 18/13 K/BB in 21 1/3 innings. Daniel Lynch IV, who worked a scoreless eighth today, might be asked to take over in the ninth for now.

Erceg allowed two doubles and two singles before getting Luke Raley to ground out to end the game. It was the second time this season that he’s given up three runs, and he has a mediocre 4.43 ERA and a poor 18/13 K/BB in 20 1/3 innings. Obviously, this one didn’t actually hurt the Royals, but if he follows with another weak showing right away, it might open the door for Daniel Lynch IV to start getting some save chances. He’ll almost certainly be down on Monday after throwing 32 pitches today.

Erceg walked one, but he retired the other three batters, all on hard-hit balls. He’s 11-for-14 saving games with his 3.26 ERA in 20 appearances.

Carlos Rodón received a no-decision on Sunday against the Blue Jays, allowing one earned run on two hits over four innings pitched as the Yankees went on to win 8-3.

Rodón struck out two while allowing two free passes. This was his second start since late June as he makes his way back from elbow inflammation. After throwing 66 pitches earlier this week, the veteran southpaw built up to 76 on Sunday. Rodón’s health became a bit more important for the Yankees after Ryan Weathers suffered an arm injury this weekend. He’s scheduled to pitch at home against the Red Sox in his next outing.

José Soriano took the loss on Sunday at Yankee Stadium, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings pitched.

Soriano struck out seven but posted his worst ratios since joining the Blue Jays. In his fourth start with his new team, constant traffic was an issue despite New York missing Aaron Judge and struggling lately. It might take a full offseason with the organization for any arsenal changes or mechanical plans to take shape. Soriano will draw the Mariners at home next time out.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI, and two runs scored as the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays 8-3 on Sunday.

Chisholm now has 18 homers to go along with 34 stolen bases this season. It’s helpful in fantasy, especially because his dual eligibility includes second base, one of the tougher positions to fill. However, his .220 batting average has actively hurt roto managers, and the remaining counting stats aren’t anything to get too excited about. Chisholm profiles as a potential 30/30 threat heading into 2027, but his long-term fantasy value is tied heavily to stolen bases, barring a big bounce-back season at the plate.

Spencer Jones went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored as the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays 8-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Jones delivered an RBI double in the second and was also caught stealing for the first time as a big-leaguer. He has seven homers and eight steals in his first 57 games with the Yankees. Of course, it has come with a 36 K%. Heliot Ramos was the odd man out with Cody Bellinger back in the lineup, but playing time will be something to watch as New York gets healthier down the stretch.

Trent Grisham went 1-for-4 with a homer, a walk, and two RBI as the Yankees took down the Blue Jays 8-3 in the Bronx.

Grisham connected for a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth, extending New York’s lead to five. While he won’t match last year’s career-high 34 homers, his 18 so far are his second-highest season total. He also has nine stolen bases after swiping just three in 2025. Grisham has remained the Yankees’ exclusive leadoff hitter against right-handed pitching while playing against most, but not all, lefties.

Willy Adames left Sunday’s game because of a left elbow injury.

No further word yet on his status. Adames, who has also been dealing with back issues, singled and scored against the Red Sox before departing in the fifth inning. If he’s forced to the IL, the Giants could give the recently acquired Shay Whitcomb a look at third base, with Christian Koss moving to short.

Kyle Leahy struck out four while allowing two hits and two walks across four scoreless innings on Sunday against the Phillies.

Leahy and four Cardinals relievers had the team in line for a victory before closer Riley O’Brien imploded, allowing six runs in the ninth. The notable takeaway is that Leahy was pulled at 63 pitches, and St. Louis has made it clear his workload will be managed down the stretch. He’s up to 126 1/3 innings this season after throwing 88 in 2025, the vast majority out of the bullpen. St. Louis’ rotation recently suffered injuries to Hunter Dobbins and Andre Pallante, so it remains to be seen how the Cardinals handle Leahy going forward. His next start lines up at home against the Pirates.

Janson Junk received a no-decision on Sunday against the Nationals, allowing one earned run on two hits over 4 2/3 innings pitched.

Junk struck out two in the outing. It’s a strong outcome against the highest-scoring offense in MLB, but Washington was without James Wood and CJ Abrams, plus Curtis Mead and Luis García Jr. Junk’s streaming upside is limited with so few strikeouts and so little length. He has a rematch with the Nationals in his next start, this time on the road.

Jackson Kent took the loss on Sunday in Miami, allowing three earned runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Kent struck out five and walked three while throwing 90 pitches. The 2024 fourth-round draft pick has now made three big-league starts with 14 strikeouts, 11 walks, and an 8.03 ERA. Neither his pitch-modeling results nor his ERA estimators suggest better days are ahead. He’s set for a rematch with the Marlins in his next appearance.

Heriberto Hernández went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI as the Marlins defeated the Nationals 6-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Hernández drove in Agustín Ramírez with his first-inning double. He was later robbed of another extra-base hit as Nationals outfielder Jacob Young climbed the wall to take it away. Hernández has shown some power upside this season while hitting lefties more reliably than righties. He’s been batting inside the top three of the order whenever Miami faces a southpaw. The Marlins could see up to four left-handers this week with matchups against the Red Sox and Nationals.
