Walbert Ureña allowed three hits and three runs with two walks and seven strikeouts over five innings in a loss to the Astros on Wednesday.

Ureña breezed through the early part of this game retiring the first eight batters he faced until Christian Vázquez took him deep for a solo shot. That seemed to knock him off his spot a little bit because he ran into trouble in the following inning. Yordan Alvarez hit a lead-off single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then, he walked Isaac Paredes after an eight-pitch battle before Jose Altuve yanked a double down the line. Cam Smith later hit a sacrifice fly to put the Astros up. Ureña can struggle against right-handed batters – as he did during that Astros’ rally – as a changeup-first righty pitcher without a reliable sweeper. That’s what did him in during that inning, but this was still a fine start as Ureña has done well to elevate his floor as this season’s wore on. In total, he has a 2.80 ERA, 109 strikeouts, and 59 walks through 112 2/3 innings in what’s become a great breakout year. Next up, he’s scheduled for a two-start week against the Guardians and Phillies with both starts at home.
Mariners call up elite pitching prospect Anderson
The Seattle Mariners called up top pitching prospect Kade Anderson, who is expected to start against the Chicago Cubs this Saturday. Eric Samulski emphasizes why he should be added in all fantasy formats.

Ureña’s post All-Star break velocity boost has relaxed just a tad, but he’s remained very difficult to hit. He’s allowed one or no runs in five of six outings, and this is the 10th time in 20 starts this season that he’s given up three hits or fewer. He’ll take an 8-8 record and a 2.67 ERA into Houston for his next start.

Ureña pitched two quiet innings against the Marlins before completely losing it in the third. A base hit and two walks loaded the bases for Xavier Edwards, who doubled to drive in two runs. Another walk loaded the bases again before Otto Lopez drove in two more runs on a single. That would do it for Ureña, ending his day with one out in the third inning. The 22-year-old right-hander will take a 2.83 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and a 97/55 K/BB ratio across 101 2/3 innings into a start against the Rangers in Anaheim on Thursday.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #57
Ureña was able to outduel Jacob Misiorowski, and that’s even with Misiorowski throwing seven strong innings. The 22-year-old gave up just three hits, and while he did issue three free passes, he made up for it with seven punchouts and the Brewers rarely threatened. In another lost season for the Halos, Ureña has been a significant bright spot. He’ll be back at it with a 2.54 ERA against the Marlins next weekend.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #57
Ureña left with a 4-1 lead after striking out five and allowing just two hits, but that wasn’t sufficient tonight. That he’s pitching for such a lousy team — and one that will probably get worse before the trade deadline — is one of the things that makes it tough to bet on the 22-year-old Ureña for the short term. He’s going to be a force to be reckoned with going forward, but there’s just so little help to be had in Anaheim. He’ll likely face the Brewers on Sunday.

Ureña was brilliant on Tuesday, holding the Cardinals to one run over six innings on his way to a win. The one run came in the fifth inning on two hits and a groundout. He scattered six hits in all and one walk while striking out five batters. The 22-year-old right-hander will take a 2.78 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and an 83/47 K/BB ratio across 87 1/3 innings into a start against the Astros in Anaheim on Monday.

Detmers has been a viable fantasy option for most of the first half of the season despite winning only three games, as he registered a 4.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 123/35 K/BB ratio across 108 2/3 innings through his first 19 starts. He’ll be followed in the Angels’ rotation by Grayson Rodriguez and Ryan Johnson in their weekend series against the Tigers. Jose Soriano and Walbert Urena will pitch on Monday and Tuesday respectively against the Cardinals.

For the good news, Ureña gave up just one hit, zero runs, and practically no hard contact in this start. The bad news, he walked five batters and just could not figure out how to put hitters away. Strike one was hard to come by, but he often fought back to get ahead in the count before failing to execute with two strikes. It was a strange outing to say the least and disappointing to not hang on long enough for a win when his team won by 12 runs. It’s also worth mentioning that his velocity was down two ticks across the board. Hopefully some rest during the All-Star break can help him get back on track. He’ll close the first half with a 2.88 ERA, 78 strikeouts, and 46 walks across 81 1/3 innings.

Ureña gave up a leadoff double to JP Crawford in the sixth and then walked three of the remaining five hitters he faced to force in a run. Before that, he walked just one through five, though he did hit two batters. He struck out six. Ureña has shown a lot of promise at age 22, but until the Angels get their act together, he doesn’t seem like a great use of a spot in shallow leagues. That said, he’s a fair play next week in a favorable matchup in Texas against the Rangers.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #57
Ureña got through four scoreless in just 36 pitches, but the fifth was a very different story, as he gave up two walks and six singles before finally being lifted. Ureña overall has been quite impressive in going 5-6 with a 3.14 ERA as a 22-year-old for a directionless franchise. It bodes well for the long haul, but he still doesn’t seem like a very good bet for the short term. He’ll likely make his next start Thursday against the Mariners.

Ureña gave up four hits, walked none and struck out six. He improved to 5-5 with the win. The Athletics loaded the bases with one out in the first inning against Ureña, but he was able to escape the jam. After that, the Athletics had only one baserunner reach second base against Ureña. He lowered his ERA to 2.41. Ureña will face the Athletics at home next weekend.

Jake Rogers hit a two-run homer off Jefry Yan in the bottom of the ninth to give the White Sox a 6-4 win over the Mets on Friday.

Rogers finally snaps of streak of going homerless for three separate organizations. It’s his first career walkoff after 47 homers in his Tigers career. He’s 2-for-14 since joining the White Sox.

Sean Burke worked six innings and allowed four runs Friday in a no-decision versus the Mets.

Burke looked unbeatable for a time in July after a velocity spike, but that extra boost is gone now and he has a 4.57 ERA in his last four starts. He’s still playable in mixed leagues, but expectations should be fairly modest. He’ll work at home against the Rangers next week.

Grant Taylor notched his fifth win after pitching a hitless top of the ninth Friday against the Mets.

Taylor struck out two of the four batters he faced in a tie game, and the White Sox went on to win it in the bottom of the ninth. Taylor will probably get Saturday off after this, potentially leading to a save chance for Sean Newcomb or Jordan Hicks.

Sean Manaea surrendered four runs in six innings Friday in a no-decision against the White Sox.

Manaea pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings before Miguel Vargas, Randal Grichuk and Colson Montgomery homered consecutively in the sixth. A quicker hook probably would have gotten the Mets a win tonight. As is, Manaea was left with a no-decision and the Mets lost in the bottom of the ninth. Manaea will take on the Brewers next week.

Miguel Vargas had a two-run homer, a double and a walk versus the Mets on Friday.

That’s 29 homers and 30 doubles for Vargas. He’s tied for fourth in the majors in extra-base hits, and he’s alone in fourth with 87 runs scored. Barring an injury, he’s going to be the first White Sox player to score 100 runs since 2006, when both Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye did it.

Francisco Alvarez went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Friday against the White Sox.

It’s a fourth straight hitless game for Alvarez. He still has a decent .233/.325/.408 line for the season, but that he’s been so bad with men on base has him batting ninth right now. He’s driven in a total of 17 baserunners (30 RBI minus 13 homers) in 334 plate appearances this season.

Geraldo Perdomo went 3-for-5 while driving in a run in a blowout win Friday over the Reds.

Perdomo came into Friday with a .318 average in August, and that number obviously went up with his showing against the Reds. He’s also still batting just .248 on the season, so it’s hard to get too excited by his solid three weeks of play, especially considering how good he was for the vast majority of 2025.

Jordan Lawlar hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs in a 9-0 win for the Diamondbacks on Friday over the Reds.

Lawlar hit his second homer of the season with a two-run shot off Nick Lodolo. He drove in his third run of the game with an RBI single five innings later. Lawlar added another run-scoring single in the contest, and when he’s been healthy enough to play, the former top prospect has looked the part. The question, of course, is whether he can play enough for this to matter. It would certainly be a mistake to give up on him in keeper leagues, that’s for sure.

Eduardo Rodriguez blanked the Reds over his 5 2/3 innings to get a win Friday for the Diamondbacks.

What a difference a year makes. Rodriguez is now 13-4 on the season, and he’s deserving of that excellent record with a 2.61 ERA; a massive improvement from the 5.03 mark he held the previous two seasons. He scattered four hits — all singles — and worked around a pair of walks with four strikeouts. The 33-year-old gets a chance to get that 14th win against the Cubs on Wednesday.

Nick Lodolo went 3 1/3 innings and allowed six runs in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Two of Lodolo’s three starts since coming off the injured list have been poor ones, and obviously this isn’t the good outing. The 28-year-old gave up 10 hits, and was consistently behind hitters with two walks and just 50-of-91 pitches landing for strikes. The 2019 first-round selection’s season is essentially a lost one, but it’s worth noting he has a relatively friendly matchup on paper against the Giants on Wednesday in San Francisco.
