Reid Detmers will start for the Angels in Friday’s second half opener against the Tigers.

Detmers has been a viable fantasy option for most of the first half of the season despite winning only three games, as he registered a 4.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 123/35 K/BB ratio across 108 2/3 innings through his first 19 starts. He’ll be followed in the Angels’ rotation by Grayson Rodriguez and Ryan Johnson in their weekend series against the Tigers. Jose Soriano and Walbert Urena will pitch on Monday and Tuesday respectively against the Cardinals.

Soriano held the A’s scoreless through three innings until Carlos Cortes took him deep for a solo blast in the fourth. After two more scoreless innings, Donovan Walton took him deep for a solo homer in the seventh. Soriano would complete the seventh with just the two runs allowed while striking out three. The 27-year-old right-hander will take a 3.48 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a 154/71 K/BB ratio across 163 innings into a start against the Orioles in Toronto on Sunday.

LAA Starting Pitcher #48

Reid Detmers shut out the Red Sox for six innings, striking out nine, in a victory Tuesday.

There are surely some contenders kicking themselves for not meeting the Angels’ asking price for Detmers. He’s allowed just three runs and amassed a 41/5 K/BB over 39 innings in his last six starts to improve to 5-8 with a 3.32 ERA for the season. He’ll take on the Mariners next Monday.
Grayson Rodriguez

LAA Starting Pitcher #21

Grayson Rodriguez allowed five runs on six hits in four innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Monday.

Rodriguez threw just 61 percent of his pitches for strikes in this one with a 23 percent CSW. His changeup posted just a 50 percent strike rate, and that has been one of his best pitches this season. On a positive note, he did post a 15 percent swinging strike rate on his curveball, and he has struggled for most of the season to get whiffs on his breaking balls. Rodriguez will take a 6.28 ERA into a start against the Nationals on Sunday, and wejust can’t recommended using him in that game.
Walbert Ureña

LAA Starting Pitcher #57

Walbert Ureña allowed one run in eight innings and took the loss against the Pirates on Sunday.

Ureña gave up three hits, walked one and struck out four. He fell to 9-10 with the loss. Ureña has now allowed two runs in 15 innings with 12 strikeouts over his last two starts. He has a 2.74 ERA. Ureña is lined up to face the Nationals on the road next weekend.
Ryan Johnson

LAA Starting Pitcher #32

Ryan Johnson allowed one run in six innings and took the loss against the Pirates on Friday.

Johnson gave up four hits, walked two and struck out six. He fell to 3-8 in 18 appearances (15 starts). Johnson had a 1.71 ERA in five starts in August and continued his excellent run of pitching in his first start of September. It’s still difficult to really buy into Johnson as he still has a 5.17 ERA and 5.36 xFIP on the season. He’s lined up to face the Red Sox on the road next week.
José Soriano

TOR Starting Pitcher #40

José Soriano allowed three earned runs and six hits while leaving after 4 2/3 innings against the Guardians on Thursday.

John Schneider gave Soriano the hook after he labored through 98 pitches. Mason Fluharty came on and allowed a walk and a two-RBI single to score both of Soriano’s inherited runners. It appears that once again, all relievers are bad. Soriano didn’t exactly deserve the win with how he pitched today and now has a 4.36 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in six starts for the Jays since coming over from the Angels at the trade deadline. He’s got a date with the West Sacramento bandbox next week that anyone not desperate for wins probably can avoid.
Reid Detmers

LAA Starting Pitcher #48

Reid Detmers held the Yankees to one run in seven innings and struck out eight on Wednesday.

The Yankees were very aggressive tonight, swinging at 60 percent of Detmers’ pitches, but they didn’t make a lot of quality contact in producing five singles and one double. It’s the fifth straight start in which Detmers has allowed one or no runs, but like three of the previous four, he didn’t factor into the decision. He’s won one time in 2 1/2 months, and he had to pitch eight scoreless innings in a 1-0 game to pull off that one. He’ll face the Red Sox next.
Grayson Rodriguez

LAA Starting Pitcher #21

Grayson Rodriguez allowed four runs and struck out seven batters over six innings in a loss against the Yankees on Tuesday.

The Yankees got to Rodriguez right away, putting three runs on the board in the first inning on a pair of home runs by Spencer Jones and Jazz Chisholm Jr. Two hits and a groundout brought a fourth run in to score in the third inning. Rodriguez did a nice job giving the Angels three more frames before leaving at 102 pitches after six innings. The 26-year-old right-hander will carry a 6.03 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and a 72/33 K/BB ratio across 77 2/3 innings into a start against the Red Sox in Boston on Monday.
Walbert Ureña

LAA Starting Pitcher #57

Walbert Ureña fanned eight and held the Yankees to one run over seven innings in a victory Monday.

Ureña’s command still comes and goes, but it wasn’t an issue tonight. He walked none and allowed just one extra-base hit — a Spencer Jones homer — to the 25 Yankees he faced tonight. The victory evened his record at 9-9 to go along with a 2.85 ERA. He’d be a Rookie of the Year candidate in many seasons, but he’s behind Parker Messick and a couple of bats in this year’s AL class. He’ll likely face the Pirates on Sunday.
Ryan Johnson

LAA Starting Pitcher #32

Ryan Johnson allowed one run in five innings and got a no-decision against the Phillies on Saturday.

Johnson gave up two hits, walked five and struck out two. The walks remain a concern, though Johnson mostly pitched out of trouble for five innings Saturday. He has a 1.72 ERA with 16 walks and 15 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings in August. Johnson is lined up to face the Pirates on the road next weekend.

The Pirates led 5-0 after one and 7-0 after two, and Chandler did an unusually nice job staying around the zone afterwards, walking none and allowing only four hits. It’s the first time in 28 starts this year that he’s gone without walking a batter. The win makes him 7-9 with a 4.25 ERA. He’s slated to face the Cubs on Sunday.

Pitching on six days’ rest did Burke no good. The average ball in play against him tonight left the bat at 100.1 mph. Unfortunately, Burke’s stuff peaked in June and July, and he a 5.68 ERA in seven starts since the beginning of August. He’s due to make his next start Sunday against the Cardinals, but we’ll have to wait and see if that ends up happening. José Urquidy would be lined up to pitch then if the White Sox want to back off Burke.
