Alonso homers, drives in three in win over Rays

Quantrill gave up four hits, walked none and struck out eight. He fell to 6-5 with the loss. Quantrill has been excellent in August with a 1.45 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 31 innings over four starts and one relief appearance. He has a 3.01 ERA on the season. Quantrill is lined up to face the Rays at home next week.

Drohan gave up six hits, walked one and struck out six. He improved to 7-5 with the win. Drohan hadn’t won a game since July 31 against the Angels, a span of three starts. He has a 3.75 ERA in 27 appearances (16 starts) for the Brewers. Drohan is lined up to face the Reds on the road next weekend.

The 27-year-old southpaw was up for the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Diamondbacks where he gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in his two innings of work. He’ll continue to serve as extra rotation depth at the Triple-A level.

Marte will make his MLB debut on Saturday, starting the second game of the team’s doubleheader against the Diamondbacks. The 22-year-old hurler has compiled a 3.85 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 113/41 K/BB ratio over 107 2/3 innings in 22 appearances (20 starts) between High-A Eugene and Double-A Richmond this season. Seth Lonsway was optioned back to Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

With only around $600,000 remaining on his contract for the remainder of the season, the Royals are hoping to get some salary relief as a team in the market for bullpen help will likely snatch him up off of waivers. The 32-year-old hurler holds a 3.72 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 48 1/3 innings on the season and has been especially dominant against right-handed batters.

The versatile 29-year-old will fly back to San Diego for further evaluation. Padres’ skipper Craig Stammen told reporters after the game that it “didn’t look good” so the expectation is that Rengifo will wind up on the injured list prior to Sunday’s ballgame.

Both players were pulled early from their final minor league rehab game at Triple-A Worcester on Saturday and are on their way to join up with the Red Sox. Anthony, 22, hasn’t played in an MLB game since May 4. He and Story should provide a major boost to the Red Sox’ offense in the month of September.

Lombard tweaked his right knee during an at-bat in the second inning and was ultimately removed from the game in the fourth. The 21-year-old phenom is set to undergo imaging on the knee before the night is through. If he’s forced to land on the injured list, it would open up additional playing time for speedster Jose Caballero.

The Braves were facing a 1-0 deficit heading into the eighth inning but got a two-out rally going with back-to-back singles from Matt Olson and Mauricio Dubon. Harris then smoked a double into the gap in left-center that scored both runs and put the Braves ahead to stay. The 25-year-old outfielder finished the day 2-for-4 and is now slashing an excellent .296/.322/.498 on the season to go along with 22 homers, 77 RBI and nine stolen bases.

Raisel Iglesias only threw 16 pitches in closing out the Rockies on Friday night, so it’s interesting that it was Fuentes who got the call in this one instead of the Braves’ closer. It wasn’t the smoothest of innings, as he allowed a leadoff walk to Willi Castro and a one-out single to Troy Johnston, but he was able to battle back to strike out Zac Veen and get Jake McCarthy on a line out to right field to end it. He has emerged as a major weapon out of the Braves’ bullpen and should continue to see the occasional save chance over the final month of the season.
