Rashi sent back down to minors

Carroll’s homer off Jack Ralston barely stayed fair down the right field line. He also had an RBI single on a blooper to left in the fifth. It was a nice way to shake off a rough start to the month that had seen him go 5-for-33 with a 14/0 K/BB in his last nine games. A loss tonight would have been devastating to Arizona’s postseason chances with the Padres winning. As is, the D-backs are 2 1/2 games behind San Diego, 3 1/2 games behind the Phillies and four games behind the Cubs with 11 to play. They’ll have to overtake one of the three in order to secure a berth.

Making his second start since Tommy John, Burnes allowed three runs in the second and then back-to-back homers to Jakob Marsee and Javier Sanoja in the fourth before eventually departing down 5-4. His cutter was a pretty steady 93 mph early in the game, but it fell off to 91.5 mph in the fourth and fifth. If the regular season were extended by a month, Burnes might be a viable mixed-league starter in October, but the only way we’d know for sure is if the D-backs advance. Burnes should face the Yankees on Sunday.

Morillo kept Arizona’s deficit at one in the top of the ninth and was credited with the win after Corbin Carroll’s walkoff homer. Morillo blew his last save chance Tuesday, but that’s really been his only misstep in months. He has a 2.28 ERA in 59 1/3 innings, and while the D-backs don’t have a closer, he’s probably the team’s best bet for saves the rest of the way.

Alcantara outpitched Corbin Burnes and left with a one-run lead that later increased to three runs, but Arizona was able to come back from there. This makes four straight starts in which Alcantara has given up at least four runs, taking his ERA from 3.38 to 3.86. At least he did rebound some with six strikeouts tonight, matching his total from his three previous starts combined. He’ll face the Padres next.

Lawlar nearly had a game-tying homer in the ninth on Sunday, settling for an RBI double instead. Tonight, he did get the homer, sending a ball 412 feet to center to cut the Marlins’ lead to one in the eighth. He also had a steal of second base, with Pavin Smith scoring as the D-backs pulled off a double steal with runners on first and third, Lawlar is hitting .267/.339/.455 with five homers in 113 plate appearances, and he’s overtaken Ryan Waldschmidt in center field in the process.

Davis went on the bereavement list Wednesday. He has a 3.52 ERA in 29 relief appearances for the White Sox this season.

Missing most of last year with injury seemed like it might kill Siri’s career, but he got a chance with the Angels in mid-May and has been decent in hitting .234/.290/.406 in 217 plate appearances. He’s not a starter going forward, and teams typically don’t love using bench spots on players as strikeout prone as Siri, so he’s probably not a lock for a major league contract if he’s set free this winter. The Angels could keep him by paying him around $1.5 million-$2 million in arbitration, but it’d make more sense to set him free and offer him a minor league deal to come back.

Giving up a three-run homer, in this case to Cal Raleigh, would normally be enough to doom Detmers to a loss or a no-decision. However, with some actual run support tonight, he improved to 6-8 on the year. He had been 1-7 with seven no-decisions while allowing two runs or more, though, really, that he’s won just four of 14 starts in which he allowed one or zero runs is just as ugly. He’s due to face the Twins on Saturday, though since he’s now over his career high for innings, the Angels might play around with his schedule and have him make just one more start the rest of the way.

With two outs, J.P. Crawford hit a liner down the first base line that might have gone for extra bases under normal circumstances. However, the Angels were playing the lines with the tying run on first base, and it turned into an easy grab for Vaughn Grissom. Joyce allowed single runs in his previous two appearances, resulting in a blown save Saturday. Still, he’s been fine in accruing a 3.38 ERA in 13 1/3 innings overall.

Anderson struck out five and walked none, but the hits he allowed came in bunches in the first and third innings. Anderson is due to make two more starts Sunday against the Rockies and then the next Saturday against the Angels. Still, with the Mariners all but out of the race, we wouldn’t be surprised if at least that last start disappears.
