Diamondbacks designated RHP Zack Littell for assignment.

With Drey Jameson returning from the injured list on Sunday, the Diamondbacks needed to free up a spot on their active roster and Littell drew the short straw. The 30-year-old hurler posted a 7.50 ERA, 2.08 WHIP and a 3/4 K/BB ratio over 12 innings in three appearances with the Diamondbacks.
Why Abrams is 'not the answer' as shortstop
Eric Samulski scrutinizes CJ Abrams return after an ankle injury, and why the Nationals should set their sights on Seaver King for shortstop.

Trevor Story (abdomen) went 0-for-4 with an RBI in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.

Story has hit .160 (4-for-25) in seven rehab games since mid-August. There’s a decent chance he’s back as Boston’s shortstop at some point in the coming days. He would be an upgrade from a defensive standpoint, but it doesn’t seem like he’s going to offer much at the plate down the home stretch.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa (forearm) went 1-for-3 with two walks in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.

Kiner-Falefa is expected to stay in Triple-A Worcester until rosters expand next week to prevent the Red Sox from having to make a challenging decision in a roster crunch. The 31-year-old has been out with forearm inflammation since late June.

Roman Anthony (finger) went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.

He’s ready. Anthony demolished a no-doubter to right-center field in the seventh inning just a few hours after telling reporters that he thinks there’s a chance he’s back from the injured list for Friday’s series opener against the Yankees. The 22-year-old’s return would provide a definite spark for the Red Sox as they make their playoff push in the closing months of the season.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Ketel Marte (knee) could play in a bridge camp game in Arizona on Thursday.

It’ll be his first game action since hitting the injured list with a knee issue last week. Lovullo reaffirmed that Marte remains on track to return from the injured list when first eligible for Monday’s series opener against the Phillies.

Zac Gallen (elbow) threw 45 pitches in a bridge camp game in Arizona on Tuesday.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Gallen was sitting in the low-to-mid 90’s with his fastball. He figures to make at least one traditional minor league rehab start since he isn’t eligible to come off the 60-day injured list until September 7. He’s been out with elbow inflammation since early July.

Corbin Burnes (shoulder) threw 24 pitches in a bridge camp game in Arizona on Tuesday.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that Burnes was up to 93 mph in the abbreviated outing and could make an appearance for Triple-A Reno, or somewhere else due to the recent wildfires in the area, later this week. The 31-year-old former ace could potentially continue building up his stamina and pitch count in the majors during the final month of the season, which means that fantasy managers shouldn’t anticipate a ton of volume.

Cubs signed C Austin Wynns to a minor league contract.

It didn’t take Wynns very long to find a new opportunity after being designated for assignment by the Rangers last week. The 35-year-old journeyman backstop has appeared in 34 games between the Athletics, Braves and Rangers this season. He’s merely emergency organizational depth at this stage of his career.

Samy Natera Jr. (back) threw a bullpen session on Tuesday.

Flame-thrower Ben Joyce has taken over as the Angels’ primary ninth-inning option since Natera hit the injured list with back spasms last week. The 26-year-old figures to make it back to Los Angeles’ high-leverage mix in a couple weeks.

Casey Mize (ankle) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Mize was able to play catch on back-to-back days after suffering a right ankle sprain during Saturday’s start against the Twins. The 29-year-old has been snake-bitten by injuries this season and that bad luck has apparently followed him to San Diego. The positive news is that he appears on track to take the ball against the Rays later this week, depending on how he’s feeling coming out of Wednesday’s bullpen session. There should be a definitive update on his status in the coming days.
