Tanner Gordon allowed six hits and one run with zero walks and five strikeouts across seven innings to earn the win in a 13-1 rout against the Nationals on Wednesday.

Gordon enjoyed this opportunity away from Coors Field to get both his first win of the season and complete seven innings for the first time in his career. Also, despite the lopsided final score, Gordon didn’t even pitch with a lead until the fifth inning. So it’s not like he was just tossing it in there against a team who knew the game was already over. Sadly, he’s heading back home next week for a two-start week against the Orioles and Cardinals.
Pitcher Bieber ends season on IL, future unknown
The Toronto Blue jays put pitcher Shane Bieber on a 15-day IL with a shoulder injury, ending his season early, and leaving his future as a free agent next season up in the air.

James Wood (oblique) was doing baserunning work on the field on Thursday.

Wood landed on the injured list on August 4th with what the team had called a mild oblique strain. However, his recovery progress has been slow, and it’s unclear if he has even begun swinging a bat. Seeing him run on the field is certainly nice, but until we see him hitting and beginning to hit high velocity, we shouldn’t expect an imminent return.

Cardinals selected the contract of RHP Cade Winquest from Triple-A Memphis

The 26-year-old was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Yankees but returned to the Cardinals in April. This season, he has moved to the bullpen full time and has a 4.54 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 57/14 K/BB ratio in 39 2/3 innings at Triple-A. He will make his MLB debut if/when he gets into a game.

Cardinals placed RHP Peter Strzelecki on the 15-day injured list with right forearm extensor inflammation.

The right-hander has a 5.79 ERA in 14 innings out of the bullpen for the Cardinals this season. Coming into this season, he had a 3.44 ERA across 83 2/3 innings in the big leagues since 2022.

Walker Jenkins went 2-for-4 with a home run and a stolen base for Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday.

Jenkins is now hitting .411/.488/.795 in August with eight home runs, 16 runs scored, 13 RBI, and seven steals. He needs to be up in the big leagues at this point. He has little left to prove in Triple-A.

Charlie Condon went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI for Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday.

It hasn’t been the best month for Condon, who is hitting .197/.326/.338 in August with two home runs, 13 RBI, and a 20/20 K/BB ratio. That being said, he is making a good amount of contact and has still proven himself over 109 games at Triple-A this season with 22 home runs and an .897 OPS. We wouldn’t be surprised to see him up in Colorado when rosters expand in September.

Mark Vientos (hand) went 2-for-4 with a solo home run for Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Viebtos has been sidelined since July 10th with a fractured hand. He began his rehab assignment late last week, and it’s nice to see that the power may not be totally lost after the hand fracture. He could return to the Mets by early next week.

Victor Mesa Jr. went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run for Triple-A Durham on Wednesday.

This was Mesa Jr.'s first rehab game after being put on the injured list with a strained left hamstring. He has only missed nine days so far, so he could be back with the Rays over the weekend.

DJ Herz (elbow/forearm) allowed one run (unearned) in two innings for Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday.

Herz walked two, allowed one hit, and struck out two in the outing. The left-hander sat 91.7 mph on his four-seamer and threw 54 percent of his pitches for strikes while recording just a seven percent swinging strike rate. Herz is making his way back from Tommy John surgery but was also shut down in June with forearm tightness. Right now, it would just be great to see him pitch a few healthy innings for the Nationals in any capacity this year before heading into the offseason.

Trevor Story (abdomen) went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.

Some of the swings and misses we saw from Story last night were on pitches that were nowhere near the strike zone. Story claims that he hopes to return at some point this weekend against the Yankees, but he’s 4-for-28 in eight rehab games and has a 10/1 K/BB ratio over that span. The Red Sox could use his defense at shortstop with Andruw Monasterio struggling, but Story’s bat doesn’t seem ready.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said late Wednesday that Roki Sasaki (blister) is headed to the injured list.

Roberts added that Eric Lauer will take Sasaki’s spot in the rotation. The 24-year-old was removed from Wednesday’s start against the Braves after 3 1/3 innings due to a significant blister that cropped up unexpectedly on his right middle finger. He’s going to miss at least one turn through the rotation and could wind up sidelined until mid-September.
