Tanner Gordon pitched five innings of one-run ball Friday against the Giants.

Gordon struck out just one. He allowed eight hits, but only Rafael Devers’ second-inning homer did any damage. Gordon stayed 0-2 with a 6.44 ERA in 50 1/3 innings over five starts and seven relief appearances, but the Rockies have won his last two starts after taking losses in each of his first 10 outings.
Devers' season ends early with core muscle injury
Rafael Devers was placed on the 60-day injured list with a core muscle injury, ending the Giants slugger's season early in the middle of an offensive tear.

Athletics placed LHP Gage Jump on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Sept. 13, with a left shoulder impingement.

Backdating the IL assignment means Jump will be able to return the day after the season ends, which seems useful. Jump finishes off a promising rookie season 6-11 with a 5.47 ERA and a 108/46 K/BB in 98 2/3 innings. On another team, he’d be of interest in shallow leagues next spring. As a member of the A’s, he has one more year to go in a minor league ballpark before he’ll offer much in the way of upside.

Athletics recalled LHP Joe Rock from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Rock, claimed off waivers from the White Sox last month, will be making his A’s debut after allowing only one run and three hits in 10 1/3 innings out of the pen for Vegas. He has a 3.00 ERA and a 23/13 K/BB in 18 innings as a major leaguer with the Rays and White Sox.

Matt McLain is back at second base for Tuesday’s game against the Dodgers.

Mets claimed INF/OF Christian Cairo off waivers from the Phillies; optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.

Cairo, 25, joins the Mets organization after hitting .227/.378/.298 with 90 walks but just 20 extra-base hits in 516 plate appearances for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. His versatility would help make him an adequate 26th man, perhaps, but he doesn’t seem to have much potential beyond that.

Rays placed RHP Tyler Wells on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Sept. 13, with right forearm tightness.

That’s not good. Wells has been terrific in a setup role since being acquired from the Orioles, allowing only three earned runs in 18 innings. He ends the regular season with a 2.38 ERA in 72 innings overall. No word yet on whether the Rays think he might be back for the postseason, though at least they didn’t put him on the 60-day IL.

Rays recalled RHP Alex Cook from Triple-A Durham.

Cook will rejoin the pen. He’s gave up three earned runs over 3 2/3 innings in his three earlier stints in the majors.

Rays activated OF Jake Fraley from the 60-day injured list.

Fraley is back from hernia surgery after hitting just .182/.308/.318 in 14 games for Triple-A Durham on a rehab assignment. He isn’t likely to return to the platoon role starting against righties that he had before getting hurt, but he’ll be available to pinch-hit and play defense. He batted .232/.300/.390 in 90 plate appearances before going on the IL in mid-May.

Rays optioned C Kenny Piper to Triple-A Durham.

Piper got one start a couple of days after being recalled last month, but he had settled into third-catcher mode since, getting a total of three plate appearances since Aug. 22. He’s gone 2-for-9 with a homer and two walks overall in the majors this season.

Rays recalled OF Jacob Melton from Triple-A Durham; placed him on the 60-day injured list with a right hamstring injury.

It’s been mostly a lost year for Melton, a player the Rays were hoping would be their center fielder of the future when they gave up Brandon Lowe, Mason Montgomery and Jake Mangum to acquire he and Anderson Brito in last winter’s three-team trade with the Pirates and Astros. Melton ended up hitting .253/.346/.475 with 26 steals in 45 games for Durham in between injuries. He should get a chance to compete for a job in the spring, but considering that he’s never played more than 105 games in four full seasons since being drafted, he’s a little hard to trust at this point.

Braves claimed RHP Michael Grove off waivers from the Rays; optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.

It’s easy to imagine the 29-year-old Grove going on waivers and getting claimed a few more times prior to the lockout in December. He should some promise as a reliever for the Dodgers before shoulder surgery, but the Rays didn’t see enough from him in seven innings since his return to believe keeping him was a priority. He’ll now likely finish out the year in the minors, as he won’t be postseason eligible for Atlanta.
