Fairbanks, who missed the minimum 15 days with his latest recurrence of his hand issues, returns without the benefit of a rehab assignment. He’ll probably go right back to closing for the Marlins. Calvin Faucher picked up the team’s only save while he was out.

Blalock made two appearances in his week with the Marlins, allowing two runs in six innings.

José Fermin is starting in his place, with Thomas Saggese moving to short. Winn was supposed to start a second straight game after returning from a fractured thumb on Tuesday.

Bryce Harper gets a partial day off as a DH. Bohm is absent despite going 6-for-21 with a homer, four doubles and four RBI in six games this month.

Davis will miss at least three days. He had pitched three of the last four days, throwing scoreless innings each time.

Murphy lost his roster spot upon being activated from the injured list on Monday, but he’s back now. He has a 4.20 ERA in 30 innings for the White Sox this season.

The Red Sox have some extra flexibility with off days coming up Thursday and Monday. Gray got to pitch on nine days’ rest last time through. Now, Suarez, who pitched seven scoreless innings against Baltimore last time out, will get eight days in between starts, with Gray working on five days’ rest.

It’s just the second time since Ortiz was called up on Aug. 3 that he’d been left out of the lineup against a righty. Ortiz is 3-for-26 with one RBI and a 9/1 K/BB in his last nine games, which helps explain his absence.

It’s unclear at the moment whether this is the elbow again or something else. Rather than use Connor Wong again, the Red Sox have Mickey Gasper catching tonight for the first time since June 22.

The Mariners aren’t really treating Cody Bradford like the typical lefty, since he has big reverse splits in limited action this year. They have left-handed-hitting J.P. Crawford is leading off for the first time since coming off the IL. They are, however, playing Taylor Ward over Lazaro Montes. And Arroyo is sitting in favor of the left-handed-hitting Cole Young. One imagines Arroyo will still start against most lefties the rest of the way, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be a big factor against righties.
