Rafael Devers went 2-for-3 with his 32nd homer and two walks in the Giants’ 5-4 win over the Pirates on Wednesday.

Devers’ homer tonight was hit 415 feet to center. He has eight RBI in his last four games, greatly improving his chances of getting to 100 for the fifth time in his career. He’s 16 away with 22 games left.

Giants manager Tony Vitello said Devers will require three months to recover following the procedure, which puts him on track to have a relatively normal offseason and be ready for the start of spring training. He finished his first full season in San Francisco hitting .258/.340/.525 with 88 runs scored, 37 homers and 98 RBI over 633 plate appearances. He’ll enter his age-30 campaign on the heels of consecutive 30-homer seasons and will be an early-round selection in all fantasy drafts.

Devers hit the shelf with a season-ending core muscle injury over the weekend. The Giants are expected to provide an official return timetable following the procedure, but he’s likely to have a relatively normal offseason and be ready for spring training. The 29-year-old slugger came up just short in his bid to become the first San Francisco hitter to reach the 40-homer plateau since Barry Bonds, finishing with 37 round-trippers in 148 games. He blasted 18 homers over his final 52 games following the All-Star break.

Wow. Devers has been the hottest hitter on the planet and has been carrying fantasy offenses in the second half of the season. He slugged his 37th home run of the season on Saturday night. Apparently he has been playing through the injury for a while now though and the Giants thought it was best to shut him down. He’ll head for further evaluation on Monday to determine the next steps. It’s a tough break for fantasy managers who now need to scramble for a replacement for the final two weeks of the season.

Devers got the scoring started on Saturday, taking Michael King deep for a two-run blast to put the Giants on the board. He’s been one of the hottest hitters in the second half, with 18 home runs since the All-Star break, trailing only Pete Crow-Armstrong. The 29-year-old slugger is up to 37 homers, 88 runs scored, and 98 RBI while slashing .258/.340/.525 across 633 plate appearances.

The slam was exceptional, as he picked a Robbie Ray curve off the ground and hit it out to right in one of the game’s toughest ballparks. It was his ninth career grand slam. He has 36 homers and 96 RBI for the season.

Andre Pallante just suddenly became a significantly better streaming option. Manager Tony Vitello spoke yesterday about giving Devers a day off, though it’s unclear if Devers wanted it. He certainly doesn’t seem to need it, having hit .393/.493/.918 with nine homers in his last 16 games. Turner Hill is DHing today, opening up left field for Grant McCray.

Devers’ first double, which plated a run in the first, was a 406-foot shot to right-center that would have been a homer in 29 ballparks, but not at Oracle Park. He has 36 doubles this season. It’s his highest total since 2022, but he’s not approaching his career high of 54 from 2019.

Devers’ first homer today was a 351-footer to right that probably would have been a single in his home ballpark. Fortunately, this one took place at Citi Field, where it just got over the yellow line. The second homer was an impressive 391-foot shot to the opposite field that was a homer everywhere. Devers has 35 homers for the third time in his career. His high is 38 from 2021.

Devers is scalding hot right now. Two more doubles here give him 34 on the season – tied for most in the league – and this home run was his 33rd. It was a towering blast too traveling deep into the upper deck in right field. Shame on anybody who thought he wouldn’t be a highly productive player any more as he now has an .846 OPS that has risen sharply over the past few weeks.

Devers took Braves starter Bryce Elder deep in the opening frame for his eighth round-tripper since the start of August, reaching the lofty 30-homer plateau for the second straight season and fifth time since 2019. He also walked twice in this contest. The 29-year-old slugger is one of the few legitimate threats in an injury-depleted Giants lineup and it wouldn’t be shocking to see more teams pitch around him during the final month of the season. He has a real shot at surpassing his previous career-high mark of 38 round-trippers, which he set with the Red Sox back in 2021.

Shohei Ohtani (biceps, knee) took batting practice once again on Friday without issue.

Ohtani hit a couple of balls off of the scoreboard during the session and will be in the Dodgers’ lineup for Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday. While he feels “really good” at the moment, the superstar slugger acknowledged that the injuries are something that he’s going to have to manage for the duration of the postseason.

Michael King will start Game 2 of the NLDS against the Brewers.

King was brilliant in a victory over the Cubs in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series, allowing just one hit over seven innings of scoreless baseball. He’ll be on regular rest for Game 2 on Sunday and would also be lined up to pitch in Game 5 on regular rest if the series goes that long. The expectation is that Nick Pivetta will start Game 3 for the Padres.

The Padres announced Friday that left-hander Robbie Ray will start in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Brewers on Saturday evening.

The 35-year-old southpaw went 13-8 with a 3.59 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 140/84 K/BB ratio over 165 2/3 innings in 31 appearances (30 starts) between the Giants and Padres. In his last start against the Brewers on August 12, Ray allowed two runs on two hits and three walks in just four innings of work. He’ll be opposed by Brewers’ ace Jacob Misiorowski on Saturday night in Milwaukee.

Pirates signed RHP José Urquidy to a minor league contract.

The 31-year-old right-hander signed a similar deal with the Pirates last offseason and wound up making five appearances for the Bucs at the MLB level before being traded to the White Sox in late July. He’ll once again add rotation depth for the Pirates and can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports that Tarik Skubal will start for the Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Braves on Saturday.

No surprises here, especially as the Braves have had more difficulty with left-handers this season. Skubal made 10 starts for the Dodgers following the mid-season trade from the Tigers, going 5-2 with a 2.61 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 70/13 K/BB ratio across 62 innings of work. He has been brilliant in his postseason career as well, posting a 2.04 ERA and 0.73 WHIP with a 56/6 K/BB ratio in just 39 2/3 frames.

Mariners claimed 1B/OF Michael Toglia off waivers from the Reds.

We’ll give him the /OF slash because the Mariners did, but he belongs at first base, and he missed the final five weeks of this year because of a right shoulder dislocation he suffered while diving in the outfield. Toglia is 28 with a .198/.275/.385 line and a 74 OPS+ in 1,095 major league plate appearances, all except the last 28 of which came with the Rockies. He does offer legitimate power, but he seems more like a minor league signing than someone who should take up a 40-man spot all winter.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Carlos Rodón will start either Game 3 or 4 against the Rays.

Interesting. Because of the extra off day built into the ALDS schedule, teams only need three starters. The Yankees, though, seem set to use four anyway. They could then pick between Gerrit Cole on six days’ rest or Cam Schlittler on four days’ rest in a potential Game 5.

It’s unclear if Ortiz will be a full-time player against the Padres. If not, that would mean a fair amount of David Hamilton at third base.
