Reid Detmers strikes out eight Yankees in gem

Giving up a three-run homer, in this case to Cal Raleigh, would normally be enough to doom Detmers to a loss or a no-decision. However, with some actual run support tonight, he improved to 6-8 on the year. He had been 1-7 with seven no-decisions while allowing two runs or more, though, really, that he’s won just four of 14 starts in which he allowed one or zero runs is just as ugly. He’s due to face the Twins on Saturday, though since he’s now over his career high for innings, the Angels might play around with his schedule and have him make just one more start the rest of the way.

There are surely some contenders kicking themselves for not meeting the Angels’ asking price for Detmers. He’s allowed just three runs and amassed a 41/5 K/BB over 39 innings in his last six starts to improve to 5-8 with a 3.32 ERA for the season. He’ll take on the Mariners next Monday.

Detmers looked like he was on his way to picking up a win, but the Angels’ bullpen put a stop to that. It was far from a dominant effort with the left-hander allowing eight hits and striking out just a pair, but it was another effective one that lowered his ERA on the campaign to 3.54. Very little has gone right for the Halos in 2026, but the conversion of Detmers back to a starting role is one of them. He’s set to face the Pirates next weekend.

MacKenzie Gore matched him, so Detmers remained 4-8 with a 3.62 ERA through 26 starts. We’re sure he’s looking forward to the Angels holding that win-loss record against him in arbitration. He’ll face the Phillies next week.

It took facing the Royals to get Detmers his first win since June 16 and fourth overall in 25 starts. It’s the third time in his career that he’s completed eight innings and the eighth time he’s struck out at least 10. Detmers certainly would have been a better bet down the stretch in fantasy leagues had the Angels sent him to a contender to the deadline. He’ll take on the Rangers next time out.

Those are some interesting names to hear that the Twins were in trade deadline discussions for because the only starting pitcher they wound up acquiring was Dean Kremer. It’s unclear if the Twins balked at the Angels’ asking price or if the Twins were interested in other starting pitchers across the league, but they seemed to want to take a big swing with their rotation, and it just didn’t pan out.

Detmers gave up three hits, walked four and struck out six. The only run he allowed came on a two-out, two-strike RBI single by Elias Diaz in the fourth inning. Detmers has a 4.00 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Royals at home on Saturday.

The revelation comes as a bit of a surprise as the Angels appear to be more willing to move on from someone like Neto, who was viewed as one of their more long-term building blocks. There are plenty of teams that could use a shortstop, which is probably why Los Angeles interim general manager John Mozeliak is going to entertain overtures. It doesn’t sound like anything is imminent, but the Angels could be headed for more of a full-scale teardown than many anticipated.

Detmers surrendered a solo homer to Yordan Alvarez in the first inning. Christian Walker later added a solo shot in the fourth. Detmers went one more inning for the Angels, giving up just the two runs through five while collecting nine strikeouts. The 27-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 4.03 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and a 145/38 K/BB ratio across 125 innings. Barring a trade, he’s lined up to face the Orioles in Baltimore next Tuesday.
