Corbin Burnes gave up four runs in 2 2/3 innings Sunday in his start against the Yankees.

All of the runs came on third-inning homers from Heliot Ramos, George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones. Burnes averaged 92.7 and 92.5 mph with his cutter in his first two starts back from Tommy John, but he was at 90.9 mph today. With the D-backs likely to be eliminated soon, Burnes might be shut down ahead of his scheduled weekend start against the Padres.
Morosi: Dodgers 'looked a little old' in NLCS
Jon Morosi joins the Dan Patrick show to discuss the big questions facing the Dodgers as they enter the offseason with an aging lineup. He contrasts this with how the Brewers built a team centered around young talent.

Burnes was placed on the injured list at the end of the season, but claims he has suffered no new injury. The 31-year-old returned to pitch just 10 1/3 innings this season, allowing nine runs on 12 hits while striking out eight and walking four. With the Diamondbacks being in the thick of the playoff hunt, it seems that Burnes may have been rushed back a bit sooner than was ideal in order to try and help the team. Let’s hope he truly is just in need of some extra rest.

Burnes had been scheduled to make one final start in the season finale on Sunday, but he’ll instead hit the injured list. The 31-year-old hurler wound up making three starts in his return from Tommy John surgery, posting a 7.84 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and an 8/4 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings. The shoulder issue will add to the uncertainty in his fantasy value heading into the 2027 campaign.

Making his second start since Tommy John, Burnes allowed three runs in the second and then back-to-back homers to Jakob Marsee and Javier Sanoja in the fourth before eventually departing down 5-4. His cutter was a pretty steady 93 mph early in the game, but it fell off to 91.5 mph in the fourth and fifth. If the regular season were extended by a month, Burnes might be a viable mixed-league starter in October, but the only way we’d know for sure is if the D-backs advance. Burnes should face the Yankees on Sunday.

Burnes gave up two hits, walked two and struck out two. He threw 57 pitches in what was his first start since June of last year. After throwing 53 pitches in his final minor rehab start, it would’ve been nice to see him throw more on Tuesday. Still only 31-years-old and with an excellent track record, Burnes is difficult to completely trust in fantasy leagues until he’s able to work deeper into games. He’s lined up to face the Marlins at home next week.

Burnes takes the ball against the Royals for his first start since June 1, 2025. The 31-year-old’s likely midseason return from last year’s Tommy John surgery was delayed by a teres major muscle strain. The 31-year-old former fantasy ace is probably going to be on a pitch count in his return to the majors, but he threw 53 pitches in his final minor league rehab outing, so it shouldn’t be overly restrictive. It’s challenging to trust Burnes right away in shallow mixed leagues, but his lengthy track record suggests that he’s a worthwhile option in deeper fantasy leagues.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher #39
It’s happening. Burnes will make his long-awaited return to Arizona’s rotation after missing most of the last two seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 31-year-old former fantasy ace shouldn’t have any significant workload restrictions since he threw 53 pitches in his final rehab outing in the minors last week. It would be surprising if Burnes provided a massive fantasy impact given how much time he’s missed, but he’s capable of helping out in deeper mixed leagues. It’s a nice matchup right out of the gate against a Kansas City lineup that ranks 21st in runs scored this season.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher #39
Burnes, who reportedly hit 93 mph during this latest session, has continued steadily increasing his pitch count after making a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Reno last weekend. The 31-year-old is roughly 15 months removed from Tommy John surgery and a teres major muscle strain that cropped up during his rehabilitation process. There’s a chance he returns to the majors to take the ball at some point during Arizona’s three-game series against the Royals next week. There should be additional clarity on his next steps before the end of the weekend. Simply put, he’s close. Given his track record, Burnes is worthy of a speculative roster spot in deeper mixed leagues.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher #39
There was some optimism that Burnes would jump into Arizona’s rotation this week after tossing two perfect innings for Triple-A Reno over the weekend. However, he’s going to need at least a few more rehab outings to continue building up his pitch count and stamina before the Diamondbacks consider bringing him back.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher #39
The 31-year-old right-hander was perhaps too efficient in this one, as he only needed 17 pitches (10 strikes) to retire all six batters that he faced, four of them on ground outs. He’s going to need at least a few more of these minor league tune-ups before he’s ready to join the Diamondbacks’ rotation down the stretch.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher #39
The 31-year-old hurler has finally made it all the way back from Tommy John surgery and is ready for live game action. Barring any setbacks, he should make a couple of starts at the MLB level down the stretch, though with the inconsistency and workload limitations that should be expected upon his return he’s not necessarily going to be a strong option from a fantasy perspective.

Ryan Vilade and Ben Williamson have joined the Rays’ starting lineup for Game 5 of the ALCS against the Guardians.

With left-hander Parker Messick on the mound for the Guardians in Game 5, the Rays will change things up with Vilade starting in right field and batting third while Williamson takes over at second base and will bat eighth. Here’s the full lineup that Rays’ skipper Kevin Cash will deploy as the Rays look to take control of the ALCS on Sunday: Yandy Díaz (DH), Jonathan Aranda (1B), Ryan Vilade (RF), Junior Caminero (3B), Chandler Simpson (LF), Jonny DeLuca (CF), Liam Hicks (C), Ben Williamson (2B) and Taylor Walls (SS).

The Guardians will roll out the same lineup in Game 5 of the ALCS that they used in a losing effort against the Rays in Game 4 on Saturday.

If you’re keeping track at home, it’s also the same lineup that they deployed in victories in Game 1 and 3 of the series. Battling Rays’ right-hander Drew Rasmussen is always a very difficult assignment, but they managed to earn a victory against him in Game 1, so they know that it can be done. Here’s the full lineup that manager Stephen Vogt has turned in for the Guardians’ most critical game of the season on Sunday: Steven Kwan (LF), José Ramírez (3B), Chase DeLauter (RF), Jo Adell (DH), Nathaniel Lowe (1B), Travis Bazzana (2B), Patrick Bailey (C), Petey Halpin (CF) and Brayan Rocchio (SS).

Ben Rortvedt has elected free agency.

The 29-year-old backstop hit .185/.185/.370 with one RBI in 28 plate appearances with the Dodgers in 2026. He’ll latch on somewhere as quality catching depth, presumably at the Triple-A level, in 2027.

MJ Melendez has elected free agency.

The 27-year-old slugger slashed a meager .192/.315/.350 with four home runs, 11 RBI and a 50/17 K/BB ratio across 144 plate appearances in 56 games with the Mets during the 2026 season. He has still flashed enough power potential that there will always be teams willing to take a chance on him as a reclamation project.

Tyler Freeman has elected free agency.

Freeman had a disappointing season for the Rockies in 2026, slashing .247/.317/.314 with three homers, 23 RBI and six stolen bases in his 288 plate appearances. He has proven to be a quality utility option in the past though and could intrigue some teams as a potential bench option.

Luis Vázquez has elected free agency.

The 27-year-old infielder sent almost the entire season at Triple-A Norfolk where he slashed .226/.271/.371 with six homers, 19 RBI and eight stolen bases across 202 plate appearances. He’ll look to latch on elsewhere on what will assuredly be another minor league pact.

Miles Mastrobuoni has elected free agency.

The versatile 30-year-old hit .192 (5-for-26) with one RBI in his limited action with the Mariners during the 2026 campaign. He’s now free to peddle his wares on the open market.

Vidal Bruján has elected free agency.

The 28-year-old former top prospect saw just 13 plate appearances in nine games with the Mets during the 2026 campaign. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Syracuse where he slashed .278/.385/.421 with five homers, 34 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 258 plate appearances. His speed and defensive versatility could make him an intriguing utility option.

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters on Thursday that the team plans to reduce the amount of games that J.T. Realmuto catches in 2027.

The 35-year-old backstop had a down season at the dish in 2026 and it’s possible that the wear and tear behind the plate played a role in his struggles. Dombrowski mentioned that Realmuto could slot in more at first base to remain in the lineup even when he’s not catching, but if he’s slashing anything near the putrid .205/.283/.331 that he did across 467 plate appearances in 2026, that sounds like a losing proposition. Fantasy managers should anticipate a drop in his overall playing time heading into 2027.

Yandy Diaz hit a two-run homer as the Rays beat the Guardians 7-3 in Game 4 of the ALCS on Saturday.

Diaz essentially put the game away with his two-run homer in the ninth to give the Rays a 7-3 lead. The homer is not only his first of the postseason, but it also gives him his first runs driven in since the regular season ended. The 35-year-old will have a chance to add to those totals in a critical Game 5 come Sunday.
