Henry Bolte went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored as the A’s bested the Angels 7-3 on Wednesday.

Bolte’s first four-hit game as a major leaguer put him at .279/.362/.407 through 455 plate appearances. His second double tonight left his bat at 115.1 mph, which is a new high for him. He previously topped out at 113.7 mph on a single against the Rays just last week.
Morosi: Dodgers 'looked a little old' in NLCS
Jon Morosi joins the Dan Patrick show to discuss the big questions facing the Dodgers as they enter the offseason with an aging lineup. He contrasts this with how the Brewers built a team centered around young talent.

Bolte has been on a tear and is up to four home runs and five stolen bases since September began. Wednesday’s round-tripper followed a monstrous game on Monday in which he homered and swiped three bases. He now has 10 homers and 19 steals, and he’s hit leadoff in every game for the A’s since August 18. Their lineup has been ravaged by season-ending injuries this year, but Bolte is taking advantage of the favorable home park down the stretch. He’ll likely enter 2027 with some sleeper appeal, though it’s fair to wonder if he’ll still fit that description given how hot he’s been to close the year.

The A’s won the game in the bottom of the ninth on a Jeff McNeil infield single off Louis Varland with the bases loaded and two outs. Bolte had drawn his third walk just prior to that hit. His homer was a 341-foot opposite field shot off Dylan Cease. He was actually on base all five times up tonight, since he reached on an Ernie Clement throwing error after his 103-mph grounder in the seventh. Blessed with a great deal of power and speed and cursed with one of the highest groundball rates in the league, Bolte is going to be a fascinating pick in fantasy leagues next spring. First, he might win some leagues for people this month if he keeps running like this. He’s 5-for-5 stealing bases in September and is up to 19 steals in 102 games on the season.

Bolte belted a two-run homer off Cody Bradford in the third, and Zack Gelof made it back-to-back with a round-tripper of his own. Then in the fourth, Bolte connected for another two-run homer that even he thought was foul off the bat, but it stayed just inside the right-field pole. It was his first career multi-homer game, and he picked up his 15th steal of the season. He’s been caught eight times, so the efficiency hasn’t been great, but the roto-friendly skill set was on full display this afternoon. Bolte has hit leadoff in every game for the A’s dating back to August 18.

Clarke has now been off the injured list for two games and has started in center field for both of them. We should note that both of them have been against left-handed pitchers, which means Carlos Cortes was always going to be on the bench for both of these games. It remains to be seen what the Athletics do against a righty, but Zack Gelof has been playing left field, and Henry Bolte has been at designated hitter, which likely means Bolte and Cortes are battling for at-bats against right-handed pitchers.

Clarke is finally back 4 1/2 months after suffering a right foot bone bruise and nearly 3 1/2 months since he strained a hamstring on his initial rehab assignment. He just hit .353 with two homers in 11 games for Triple-A Las Vegas, and he should finish out the season as the Athletics’ primary center fielder. Henry Bolte can slide over to left, giving the A’s maybe the game’s best defensive outfield. Carlos Cortes will likely spend more time at DH, taking at-bats away from Max Muncy.

Clarke was working his way back from a foot injury when he hurt his hamstring in late May. He returned to the field on August 18 and has since gone 6-for-13 with one home run, five RBI, and a 3/4 K/BB ratio. He has not yet attempted a steal, which would be nice to see to verify the health of his hamstring, but there is a chance that Clarke can return to center field for the Athletics by the end of the week, which would push Henry Bolte to a corner outfield spot and may cost Carlos Cortes playing time.

Bolte is certainly heating up. Two more knocks here means he’s had at least one hit in 13 of 17 games in August with a .338 average over that span. He’s also hit lead-off in four of five games and has the type of everyday role, raw tools, and home ballpark that we look for when trying to find lightning in a bottle this time of year.

Bolte’s homer off MacKenzie Gore gave the A’s all of their runs this evening. He’s back up to .261/.334/.368, which certainly isn’t great but is still impressive for someone who strikes out or hits grounders two-thirds of the time.

Bolte was hitless through his first four at-bats before giving the A’s an insurance run with a solo blast in the ninth. His fifth home run of the season left the bat at 111.5 mph and traveled an impressive 439 feet. The 23-year-old outfielder is hitting .253/.332/.350 with 25 runs scored, 22 RBI, and 13 steals across 270 plate appearances.

Bolte went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts out of the leadoff spot against Red Sox southpaw Payton Tolle. In his defense, Tolle finished with 14 strikeouts in a dominant performance. He’ll continue to get opportunities against left-handers, which is the case in this one with Jake Bennett taking the ball for Boston, with Lawrence Butler handling the top spot against right-handers.

The Guardians are sticking with the same lineup for a fourth straight game Monday in Game 6 against the Rays.

Even though the Guardians have been limited to eight runs in the last four games, nothing is changing tonight. The lineup: Steven Kwan (LF), José Ramírez (3B), Chase DeLauter (RF), Jo Adell (DH), Nathaniel Lowe (1B), Travis Bazzana (2B), Patrick Bailey (C), Petey Halpin (CF) and Brayan Rocchio (SS). The only other player to get a start in the series was Austin Hedges catching in Game 2.

Cubs named Steve Miller their new vice president in charge of overseeing the International Scouting department.

Miller comes over after serving as the Rays’ Director of International Scouting since 2019. It’s impossible to know how big a role one executive played in a team’s success on the international market; the Rays, under Miller’s stewardship, had several notable international signings. Perhaps the biggest difference is that the Rays have 19 international free agent signings who are listed in FanGraphs’ recent prospect rankings, while the Cubs only have six. Miller will be looking to improve upon that production.

Shawn Armstrong will serve as the opener for the Guardians in Game 6 of the ALCS.

It’s a “win or go home” situation for the Guardians, so every reliever is going to be a potential option on Monday. Tanner Bibee figures to serve as one of the bulk followers, but Joey Cantillo threw just 15 pitches in Game 4 on Saturday, and Slade Cecconi threw 22 pitches in that game, so they will both be possibilities as well. Gavin Williams, we know, will not be an option unless there is a Game 7.

Athletics hired Taylor Smith as their new President of Baseball Operations.

Smith was one of Boston’s senior vice presidents as well as an assistant general manager. He had been in that role since October 2024, when Boston hired him away from the Tampa Bay Rays, where he had spent six years, beginning as an analyst of baseball research and development. Smith also worked as an intern for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ research and development team during the 2017 season, so he has spent many years in different roles for a few top-tier organizations, which likely made him an intriguing candidate for an Athletics organization that is looking for a fresh identity ahead of their move to Las Vegas.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Orioles are hiring Jared Banner as their general manager.

Banner was most recently the assistant general manager for the Cubs, but the 41-year-old worked in the Red Sox front office for 11 years before becoming the farm director for the Mets, and then holding the same position with the Cubs. The Athletic reports that Banner’s experience with the Mets led the Cubs to push for Pete Crow-Armstrong in the 2021 trade for Javier Baez, which wound up being a massive win for the Cubs. Banner will now work under Mike Elias in Baltimore in a front office that has undergone major reconstruction this offseason, with assistant GM Sig Mejdal no longer overseeing analytics and former vice president of player development Matt Blood being let go.

Yakyu Cosmopolitan reports that the Hanshin Tigers have accepted 3B/OF Teruaki Sato’s request to be posted for MLB teams.

Sato reportedly asked to be posted sooner rather than later because he would like to sign with a team before any potential lockout occurs. The 27-year-old just won the Nippon Professional Baseball triple crown after hitting .308/.385/.613 in 142 games with 39 home runs, 106 RBI, and eight steals. Sato was the first Japanese player to win the triple crown since Munetaka Murakami did. Creating a comparison based on their NPB success, Sato has slightly less power than Murakami but makes more contact in the zone. However, Sato chases outside of the zone far more than Murakami, which could be an issue when he transitions stateside because his power is good but is not on the same level as Murakami and may not carry over at the same level that it did in Japan.

The Guardians will not bring back Gavin Williams on short rest in ALCS Game 6 against the Rays.

Manager Stephen Vogt wasn’t ready to name a starter, but the plan doesn’t include Williams, who saw his velocity dip in his fifth and final inning Wednesday. Tanner Bibee and Joey Cantillo will both be available to go long in Game 6.
