Orioles recalled RHP Cory Doyne from Triple-A Norfolk.

Doyne got to make one appearance for the Orioles last month before Sam Perlozzo’s firing started the chain reaction that got him sent back to the minors. He deserves a real look this time. In fact, he might be as good of a choice to close as there is in the pen. Keep an eye on him.

Trea Turner was removed from Monday’s s game against the Marlins with a right wrist contusion.

Turner managed to stay in after being hit by a pitch earlier in the contest. He departed in the eighth inning after going 0-for-3. He came into this one hitting just .200 (10-for-50) with two extra-base hits and three steals since June 1. The 32-year-old will presumably head for X-rays to determine whether he suffered any fractures. There should be an update on his status following the game or prior to Tuesday’s showdown.

Gleyber Torres made an early exit from Monday’s series opener against the Astros.

Torres was lifted for a defensive replacement in the second inning after striking out in his lone at-bat of the contest. He appeared to tweak something on an awkward swing and was replaced afterwards by rookie Hao-Yu Lee at second base. There should be an update on his status shortly.

SF 1st Baseman #16
The Giants are open to offer on Rafael Devers, Willy Adames and Matt Chapman, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Olney adds that Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray are also obvious trade candidates. All indications are that Logan Webb is one of the few untouchables for San Francisco as they pivot towards more of a long-term build. The Giants sit at 29–43, nine games out of a playoff spot. Nothing appears imminent, but barring a dramatic turnaround, San Francisco is shaping up to be a seller ahead of the trade deadline in early August.

Sam Haggerty

Reds signed OF Sam Haggerty to a minor league contract.

Haggerty latches on with Cincinnati as emergency outfield depth after being cut loose by the Rangers last week. The 32-year-old bench outfielder has hit .232/.310/.344 across 706 career plate appearances in the big leagues since 2019.

Braves re-signed C Maverick Handley to a minor league contract.

Handley winds up returning to Atlanta on a new minor league pact after being claimed off waivers from the Orioles back in late May. The 28-year-old backstop has appeared in 17 games in the majors over the last two years.

Jacob Webb

MIN Relief Pitcher #81

Twins signed RHP Jacob Webb to a minor league contract.

Webb latches on with Minnesota shortly after being released by the Red Sox. The 27-year-old has yet to reach the majors and struggled to a 6.35 ERA across 28 1/3 innings for Triple-A Worcester. He’s merely a low-risk depth addition for the Twins.

Chandler Simpson is not in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers.

Simpson takes a seat with lefty-masher Ryan Vilade getting the nod to face southpaw Eric Lauer, who gets the ball for Los Angeles to kick off a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. The 25-year-old speedster has started just four of six games since missing time last week with a lingering thumb issue.

Justin Verlander (hip) threw a 66-pitch, four-inning simulated game on Monday at Daikin Park in Houston.

Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press speculates that Verlander is healthy but the Tigers don’t seem to think he’s ready to pitch in the majors from a performance standpoint, which is why he didn’t take the ball for Monday’s series opener against the Astros. There’s a chance the club decides he’s ready later this week, especially since Troy Melton is now dealing with a back issue that throws his availability into question.

Tyler Glasnow

LAD Starting Pitcher #31

Tyler Glasnow (back) remains shut down from throwing.

Glasnow’s lack of progress from a recovery and throwing program standpoint is perplexing since all indications were that he was dealing with a relatively minor back issue that put him on the shelf back in early May. Back injuries, however, can be unpredictable. There’s almost zero chance he’ll make it back before next month’s All-Star break and his return timeline is extremely murky since he’s ostensibly been in a holding pattern for nearly a month at this point.

Teoscar Hernández

LAD Left Fielder #37

Teoscar Hernández (hamstring) could begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week.

Hernández has been working his way back from a Grade 1 hamstring strain that sent him to the injured list back on May 30. There’s a chance he’s ready to return to game action later this week, which would put him on track to return to Los Angeles by the end of June.
