Cubs optioned RHP Jeff Samardzija to Triple-A Iowa.
Especially with Rich Harden seemingly pitching hurt and Chad Gaudin gone, sending Samardzija to Triple-A to work as a starter seems like a good plan. He may be needed in the rotation pretty soon. This means the Rule 5 pick David Patton, who was taken out of the Rockies organization, and Angel Guzman will both have bullpen spots.

Padres signed 1B/OF Nick Castellanos to a one-year contract.
With the Phillies picking up the tab on his salary, the Padres are only obligated to pay him the league minimum in 2026. He’ll get an opportunity to play first base as well as spend time in the corner outfield for the Padres where he’ll add another legitimate right-handed bat to the middle of the lineup.
Carroll, Lindor, Holliday all injure hamate bones
Eric Samulski dives into the rash of hamate bone injuries affecting MLB stars, sharing the latest news regarding Corbin Carroll, Jackson Holliday and Francisco Lindor, who all will miss time with hamate bone injuries.
  • AZ Pitcher #39
Diamondbacks placed RHP Corbin Burnes on the 60-day injured list.
The star 31-year-old right-hander is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery and is tentatively targeting a return around the All-Star break. This was done primarily as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster to make the Zac Gallen signing official on Sunday.
  • AZ Pitcher #33
Diamondbacks placed LHP A.J. Puk on the 60-day injured list.
Puk continues to work his way back from last June’s Tommy John surgery. He claims that he’s ahead of schedule and wants to rejoin the Diamondbacks’ bullpen before the end of June, which would provide a significant boost to the backend of the team’s bullpen. Moving him to the 60-day IL now frees up a spot on the D’Backs’ 40-man roster for the addition of Grant Holman on Sunday.
  • AZ Pitcher #67
Diamondbacks claimed RHP Grant Holman off of waivers from the Athletics.
The A’s removed the 25-year-old hurler from their 40-man roster earlier in the week when they made their signing of Scott Barlow official. Holman has proven to be an outstanding reliever in the minor leagues but has yet to be able to translate that success to the game’s highest level. He makes for a solid depth addition to the Diamondbacks’ bullpen.
  • CIN 3rd Baseman #43
Reds’ manager Terry Francona told reporters on Sunday that Sal Stewart will focus primarily on playing first base during spring training.
He’ll also mix in at second base, with the intention that he would slide over there on days when Matt McLain is off or Elly De La Cruz is off and McLain moves over to shortstop. Francona wants the majority of Stewart’s emphasis this spring though to be at first base. As long as his bat finds its way into the Reds’ lineup on a regular basis, fantasy managers won’t care where he’s lined up defensively.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #31
Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday that right-hander Cam Schlittler could resume throwing from a mound on Tuesday.
The Yankees have slow played Schlittler early in camp as he’s dealing with a bit of inflammation in the middle of his back. Naturally, they’re going to take every possible precaution at this point in the season and won’t risk aggravating the issue further. As of now, there’s no reason to expect that he won’t be ready for the start of the regular season.
  • NYM Pitcher #72
Mets placed RHP Dedniel Núñez on the 60-day injured list.
Núñez is still in the recovery phase of his second career Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss the bulk of the 2026 campaign. Shifting him to the 60-day injured list clears a spot on the Mets’ 40-man roster for the addition of Ben Rortvedt on Sunday.
  • NYM Catcher #47
Mets claimed C Ben Rortvedt off of waivers from the Dodgers.
The 28-year-old backstop had just been claimed off of waivers from the Reds last week, but he’ll change jerseys once again as he joins the Mets. Rortvedt will provide quality catching depth for the Mets and can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.
  • CHC Infield
Cubs designated INF Ben Cowles for assignment.
The 26-year-old infielder was claimed off of waivers from the White Sox in mid-January, but he’ll get removed from the Cubs’ 40-man roster following the addition of Shelby Miller on Sunday. There’s a decent chance he slides through waivers unclaimed and continues to function as extra infield depth for the Cubs.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #64
Cubs signed RHP Shelby Miller to a two-year, $2.5 million contract.
The deal also includes a club option for the 2028 season. Miller is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2026 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. To clear a spot on the Cubs’ 40-man roster, Ben Cowles was designated for assignment.
