The Orioles are “really working on” signing Chen Wei-Yin, reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.
Baltimore inked Tsuyoshi Wada to a two-year deal on Monday but apparently isn’t done looking across the ocean for pitching help. Wei-Yin, 26, is younger and a harder thrower than Wada. He will also cost more money and require more years. The lefty has a nice fastball and an average slider. He’s 28-20 with a 2.41 ERA in 466-plus innings over three years for the Chunichi Dragons in Japan.

Masataka Yoshida doubled, walked and scored twice as the Red Sox routed Northeastern University 18-3 on Friday.
Those were Yoshida’s only two plate appearances before he was lifted. The Red Sox would surely still like to find a taker for Yoshida, who is owed $36 million over the next two years, but he could still contribute as a DH if any of the team’s top four outfielders get hurt. While his .282/.337/.425 line in three years as a major leaguer isn’t quite what the Red Sox were hoping for when they signed him, it still amounts to a 109 OPS+.
Twins P Lopez suffers torn UCL; surgery likely
While Pablo Lopez weighs his treatment options following a crushing spring training injury, Eric Samulski gives a word of caution to fantasy managers on the market for pitchers.
  • BAL 1st Baseman #25
Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer in his third at-bat Friday to account for all of the scoring as the Orioles topped the Yankees 2-0.
Every other Orioles regular came out after two at-bats, but Alonso pushed for a third after a groundout and a lineout. He got it and hit his first homer in an Orioles uniform, taking Bradley Hanner out to left. The Orioles had Alonso hitting second behind Gunnar Henderson in today’s lineup, and one wonders if that might be the Opening Day combo with probable leadoff man Jackson Holliday and frequent No. 2 hitter Jordan Westburg sidelined. Hitting second would be a little different for Alonso, but he has started there 133 times in his career. 70 of those games came in his rookie season in 2019.
  • BAL Pitcher #28
Trevor Rogers struck out three in two scoreless innings Friday against the Yankees.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. soft single produced the only baserunner against Rogers. The lefty’s velocity is already right where it was in 2025, and the only question he’s facing this spring is whether it will be or Kyle Bradish who gets named Baltimore’s Opening Day starter.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher
Trey Gibson blanked the Yankees for the final three innings of Friday’s game to earn a save.
The Orioles’ announcers figured Gibson was one and done after a scoreless seventh, but he came back out for a quick eighth and the Orioles just let him finish from there. Gibson allowed two hits, walked none and struck out three. Arguably the Orioles’ best pitching prospect at this point, he’s likely to open up in Triple-A and spend the bulk of the season there.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #79
Elmer Rodríguez tossed three scoreless innings against the Orioles in his start Friday.
Rodríguez wasn’t working at peak velocity just yet, but even so, he did a nice job against an Orioles lineup stacked with regulars. He’s taken over as the Yankees’ No. 1 pitching prospect in the year since he was acquired from the Red Sox for Carlos Narváez, and he might get a chance to contribute in the majors this summer.
  • FA Starting Pitcher #31
According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet, the talks between the Blue Jays and free agent right-hander Max Scherzer have intensified over the past week.
Nicholson-Smith notes that other teams are still in the mix as well, but the Blue Jays appear to be his most serious suitor at the moment on a one-year deal. The 41-year-old hurler made 17 starts for the Jays in 2025, posting an underwhelming 5.19 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and an 82/23 K/BB ratio across 85 innings of work. With Shane Bieber set to open the season on the injured list, the Jays look to be in the market for additional rotation depth and a reunion with Scherzer seemingly makes sense for both sides.
  • BAL Infield
Orioles claimed INF Bryan Ramos off of waivers from the Cardinals.
The Cardinals claimed the 23-year-old infielder off of waivers from the Orioles during the first week of February and now he’ll rejoin the O’s after the Cardinals designated him for assignment on Monday. With Jordan Westburg set to open the season on the injured list, Ramos will add extra depth at third base.
  • CWS Outfield
Everson Pereira was scratched from the White Sox’ starting lineup for Friday’s Cactus League opener due to tightness in his right side.
It sounds like a minor issue and not something that should sideline the 24-year-old outfielder long term. He’ll have plenty of opportunities to state his case for a spot in the White Sox’ Opening Day outfield before the spring concludes.
  • MIN Pitcher #49
Twins’ right-hander Pablo López will undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Wednesday.
The announcement doesn’t come as a surprise after the 29-year-old hurler was diagnosed with significant tearing of his UCL earlier in the week. It’s a brutal break for the Twins as López was set to anchor their starting rotation heading into the 2026 season. He’ll now miss the entire year — and possibly the start of the 2027 season as well, while recovering from the procedure.
  • TEX Outfield #24
Brandon Nimmo isn’t likely to make his Cactus League debut with the Rangers until March.
There’s nothing wrong physically with the 32-year-old outfielder, he just prefers to ramp up slowly and the Rangers have been accommodating to his usual routine. He has plenty of time to get himself ready for the start of the regular season even if he misses the first couple of Cactus League affairs.
