De La Cruz was cut by the Brewers after allowing right runs -- seven earned -- over his first 3 1/3 spring innings. The right-hander has a pretty decent arm, though, and has experiences as both a starter and reliever. He’s out of options and seems likely to crack the Cubs’ Opening Day roster as a long man.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the 21-year-old hitting machine’s early-season performance has been his plate discipline, as he’s struck out just three times while also drawing three walks. He’s batting second for the first time on Tuesday night at Chase Field after hitting sixth at the outset of the year.

Zach Cole has been diagnosed with a broken toe on his right foot after being hit by a pitch over the weekend at Triple-A Sugar Land.

Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters it’s going to take a little while for Cole to get back after he suffered a fractured toe over the weekend while playing for Triple-A Sugar Land. His absence is a hit to Houston’s outfield depth when injuries inevitable strike at the highest level.
