Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that new Pirates’ general manager Ben Cherington respects and likes the managerial leg work that has already been done by the Pirates’ brass.
It sounds like rather than conducting a new search, he’ll simply re-interview the candidates that the Pirates already liked. Two of the top candidates - Mark Kotsay and Derek Shelton - already have ties to Cherington as Kotsay was a player with the Red Sox in 2008 and 2009 while Cherington was there and Shelton served as a coach for the Blue Jays in 2017 during Cherington’s tenure in Toronto.

Yankees agreed to terms with SS Anthony Volpe on a one-year, $3.475 million contract.
Volpe is sitting at exactly three years of service time after debuting at the beginning of the 2023 season. He’s avoided any Triple-A demotions since, though it’s possible that could happen this year if he’s not quickly up to speed once he makes his way back from shoulder surgery. He struggled to a .212/.272/.391 line in 153 games last season.
Okamoto could be 'undervalued' 2026 fantasy asset
The Blue Jays continued their strong offseason by adding Japanese star Kazuma Okamoto on a four-year deal, leaving Eric Samulski to assess what his presence means for Toronto's offseason plans and fantasy assets.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #81
Yankees agreed to terms with RHP Luis Gil on a one-year, $2.1625 million contract.
Gil, who debuted for the Yankees in 2021 three years before winning AL Rookie of the Year, was a first-time arbitration eligible after posting a 3.32 ERA in 11 starts last season. He, of course, missed much of the season with a lat strain. The Yankees seem rather down on him now, but he’ll have a rotation spot initially. He just might be vulnerable to getting demoted when either Carlos Rodón or Gerrit Cole returns.
  • SEA Starting Pitcher #36
Mariners agreed to terms with RHP Logan Gilbert on a one-year, $10.927 million contract.
Gilbert was a Super Two player after 2023, so this is his third of four years in arbitration. The 28-year-old had a 3.44 ERA and a 173/31 K/BB in 131 innings last season, though he did serve his first ever IL stint with an elbow strain in the first half of the year. Despite that, he still tracks as a top-five fantasy SP in 2026.
  • NYY Shortstop #72
Yankees agreed to terms with INF José Caballero on a one-year, $2 million contract.
Caballero qualified for arbitration as a Super Two player after falling just two days short of having three years of service time. The utilityman hit .236/.339/.347 with 49 steals in 370 plate appearances for the Rays and Yankees last season. He’s expected to open up as the Bombers’ starting shortstop with Anthony Volpe due to miss the first month after shoulder surgery.
  • PIT Relief Pitcher #49
Pirates signed RHP Chris Devenski to a minor league contract.
Once a mainstay in the Astros pen, Devenski got hurt in 2020 and has bounced around since, throwing a total of 107 2/3 innings in the majors the last five years. He pitched 16 2/3 innings with a 2.16 ERA for the Mets last year, but apart from that, his best ERA since 2019 is 4.46 in 2023.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #78
Orioles agreed to terms with RHP Yennier Cano on a one-year, $1.6 million contract.
Cano struggled to a 5.12 ERA in 58 innings last year, but he’s still a strong groundball pitcher with a decent strikeout rate and his .335 BABIP last year wasn’t all his fault. He’ll contend for a setup role in the Baltimore pen, but since he does have two option years left, he’s not promised anything.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #52
Astros agreed to terms with RHP Bryan Abreu on a one-year, $5.85 million contract.
Arbitration isn’t kind to setup men in general, but Abreu has been good enough for long enough that he’s at least getting paid about one-third of what he’s worth. The 28-year-old had a 2.28 ERA in 71 innings for the Astros last season. He’ll be a free agent after 2026.
  • CIN 2nd Baseman #9
Reds agreed to terms with 2B Matt McLain on a one-year, $2.3 million contract.
McLain was called up early enough in the 2023 season to qualify as a Super Two player this year, and he’ll make about three times the minimum despite missing 2024 and struggling throughout last season. He should remain the Reds’ starting second baseman this year, but if he continues to falter offensively, the Reds have Gavin Lux and Sal Stewart as alternatives. Hopefully, it won’t come to that.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #35
Marlins agreed to terms with LHP Ryan Weathers on a one-year, $1.35 million contract.
Weathers showed impressive stuff last year, but he was limited to eight starts by forearm and lat injuries, finishing with a 3.99 ERA. He should be pretty much assured a spot in Miami’s rotation, and there’s the chance of some mixed-league value, though the questions about his health are concerning.
  • TEX Shortstop #8
Rangers agreed to terms with INF/OF Josh Smith on a one-year, $3.225 million contract.
Smith barely missed being arbitration eligible last year, which would have boosted his 2026 salary, too. Still, this isn’t bad for someone with three-[plus years of service time. Smith hit .251/.335/.366 in 563 plate appearances last season. He’s likely to be the Rangers’ second baseman against right-handers following the Marcus Semien trade.
