Cardinals recalled INF César Prieto from Triple-A Memphis.

With JJ Wetherhold (wrist) unexpectedly landing on the injured list on Sunday, Prieto will return to provide infield depth. The 27-year-old has gone 2-for-31 (.065) in his limited action with the Cardinals this season and can be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Cardinals placed INF JJ Wetherholt on the 10-day injured list with right wrist tendinitis.

Wetherholt played the entire game on Saturday, though he did get a day off to rest on Thursday, so it’s possible this is an issue that has lingered for a while. No word yet from the Cardinals on how long they expect him to be shelved for. César Prieto was recalled from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move on Sunday.

The 27-year-old infielder has done a nice job during his time with the Red Sox this season, slashing .250/.331/.405 with three homers, 13 RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 171 plate appearances. With Roman Anthony and Trevor Story returning from the injured list on Sunday though, he gets squeezed off of the active roster. Expect to see him again once rosters expand in September.

Red Sox optioned C/INF Mickey Gasper to Triple-A Worcester.

With Roman Anthony and Trevor Story rejoining the roster on Sunday, the Red Sox were forced to make some tough decisions on their bench and Gasper wound up on the outside looking in. The 30-year-old has hit a solid .278/.374/.466 with five homers and 19 RBI in 156 plate appearances with the Red Sox this season. He’ll continue to function as extra depth at the Triple-A level.

Brady House is not in the Nationals’ starting lineup for Sunday’s showdown against the Marlins.

It’s nothing more than a routine day of rest for the 23-year-old third baseman. Jorbit Vivas will start in his place at the hot corner and will bat sixth against Marlins’ right-hander Janson Junk.

Clarke Schmidt (elbow) struggled in his first minor league rehab outing at Double-A Somerset on Saturday, allowing two runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Schmidt allowed a leadoff single to Jaison Chourio to open the ballgame, then after a strike out, he served up a two-run homer to Aaron Walton. The 30-year-old righty rebounded to strike out the next hitter before turning the ball over to the bullpen. He threw 16 of his 20 pitches for strikes in the contest and felt good after the game, which is all that really matters at this stage. He’s expected to work out of the Yankees’ bullpen at some point in September once he’s deemed ready to go.

Ryan McMahon (thumb) began a minor league rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset on Saturday.

The 31-year-old slugger has been shelved since August 20 due to a left thumb sprain. He’s only expected to need a handful of at-bats on a rehab assignment before he’s ready to rejoin the Yankees. Barring any setbacks, expect him to return early next week.

The 27-year-old backstop had been shelved since early June due to a left hamate bone fracture. He’ll continue to operate as extra catching depth for the Halos at the Triple-A level.
