The 24-year-old has been out with posterior elbow inflammation since late June and remains without a clear return timetable following this latest setback. The procedural move opens up a spot on Washington’s 40-man roster to claim starter Matt Waldron off waivers.

Ohtani remains without a definitive timeline to return to pitching in games for the Dodgers, but the fact that he’s progressed to facing hitters again means that he’s getting close. The big question is whether he can throw enough strikes to be a consistent starter at the highest level.
