  • DET First Baseman #20
Spencer Torkelson is not in the Tigers’ lineup for Monday night’s matchup against the Dodgers.
It’s a rare day of rest for the 24-year-old slugger. Tyler Nevin will start in his place at first base and will bat sixth for the Tigers against Lance Lynn and the Dodgers on Monday evening. Torkelson has been mashing the baseball in the second half of the season — slashing .240/.326/.507 with 16 long balls and 38 RBI in 60 games after the All-Star break.
  • ATL Third Baseman #9
Braves activated INF Ehire Adrianza from the 60-day injured list and designated him for assignment.
The 34-year-old infielder has been sidelined since early May due to a left shoulder strain. There’s a decent chance that he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed and continues to function as extra infield depth for the Braves in the minor leagues. On the season, Adrianza has gone 0-for-10 with a 4/1 K/BB ratio over 11 plate appearances with the Braves.
  • NYY Catcher #72
Austin Wells went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer on Monday, leading the Yankees to a 6-4 victory over the Diamondbacks.
Wells took Arizona starter Merrill Kelly deep for a two-run shot in the fourth inning. It was his second round-tripper in 15 games since being promoted earlier this month from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He also singled and came around to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
  • ARI Center Fielder #7
Corbin Carroll went 3-for-5 with an RBI and also stole a base on Monday in the Diamondbacks’ loss to the Yankees.
Carroll put the Diamondbacks ahead briefly in the late stages of Monday’s low-scoring afternoon matinee at rain-soaked Yankee Stadium with an eighth-inning RBI single to left field off righty reliever Ian Hamilton. He notched his 10th three-hit effort of the 2023 campaign in this one and also tallied his 51st stolen base of the year. The NL Rookie of the Year front-runner is slashing a sublime .288/.363/.509 with 112 runs scored, 25 homers, 74 RBI and 51 stolen bases across 623 plate appearances. He’ll be an early first-round selection in all fantasy drafts next spring.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #35
Clay Holmes fired a perfect ninth inning on Monday against the Diamondbacks to record his 22nd save of the season.
Holmes received the call to protect a two-run lead in the final frame on Monday afternoon at Yankee Stadium and wound up needing 15 pitches (13 strikes) to slam the door. He struck out Tommy Pham and Christian Walker before winning a lengthy eight-pitch battle with Alek Thomas to end the contest.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #36
Clarke Schmidt gave up two runs over four innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks.
Schmidt didn’t factor into the decision during Monday’s makeup contest at Yankee Stadium, needing 79 pitches (47 strikes) to complete four frames. He notched three strikeouts and also issued three walks. He’ll bring an inflated 4.65 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 146/46 K/BB ratio across 155 innings (31 starts) into a favorable road tilt against the Royals to close out the 2023 campaign.
  • ARI Starting Pitcher #29
Merrill Kelly allowed two runs over five innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Yankees.
Kelly held New York’s lineup scoreless until the fourth inning when he served up a two-run homer to rookie catcher Austin Wells, which accounted for all of the damage against him. He finished with five strikeouts and also handed out a pair of free passes. He’ll carry a solid 3.38 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 182/67 K/BB ratio across 170 2/3 innings (29 starts) into a challenging matchup on Saturday against the Astros in his final regular-season outing.
  • MIL Left Fielder #5
Garrett Mitchell (shoulder) is expected to return for Tuesday’s series opener against the Cardinals.
Mitchell has missed the last five months since undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, but will make it back to Milwaukee before the regular season concludes. The 25-year-old rookie outfielder batted. 188 with three steals in eight games for Triple-A Nashville on his recent minor league rehab assignment.
  • CIN Shortstop #28
Reds designated INF Kevin Newman for assignment.
Newman has been on the shelf since mid-August with a left oblique strain and there simply isn’t a spot on the Reds’ roster at the moment with so many of their prospects ascending to the big leagues over the past few months. The 30-year-old veteran will get a head start on free agency and likely be able to latch on somewhere else for the 2024 campaign.
  • NYM Catcher #4
Francisco Alvarez is day-to-day with a left middle finger contusion.
X-rays came back negative for any fractures after Alvarez was lifted from Sunday’s series finale against the Marlins after taking a foul ball off his left hand. Occasional bumps and bruises are the cost of doing business behind the plate, but it’s an encouraging sign that the 21-year-old former top prospect has managed to avoid serious injury heading into the final week of the regular season.
  • SF Relief Pitcher #36
Giants signed RHP Spencer Howard to a minor league contract.
The deal will presumably keep Howard in San Francisco for the upcoming 2024 campaign as a potential reclamation project. The 27-year-old former top prospect was cut loose last month by the Yankees after a handful of appearances at the Triple-A level. He’s made just three relief appearances this season in the majors for the Rangers before being dealt to New York at the trade deadline.
