With Manny Machado likely to start the season as the team’s designated hitter, Batten was in the conversation to play some third base early in the season. That will apparently not be happening. The same goes for prospect Jakob Marsee who was battling with Graham Pauley and Jackson Merrill for an outfield opportunity. Perhaps he’ll get another shot during the season.

Herget, 31, has a 3.30 ERA in 30 innings in the minors and a 4.38 ERA in 12 1/3 innings in the majors for the Braves this season. The Cubs declined to add to their roster right away, but he can eat innings if someone gets hurt.

Davis, who was viewed as one of the game’s very best prospects after 2021, has been limited to 179 games the last three years, but unlike 2022 and ’23, he was fairly productive when he played this season, hitting .220/.369/.451 in 217 plate appearances. He hasn’t been written off just yet, but he’s definitely fallen behind other outfield prospects ion the Cubs’ depth chart.

He also didn’t start Wednesday before the off day Thursday. O’Hoppe is third in the majors in inning caught this season, which might have something to do with his decline in productivity in recent weeks. Matt Thaiss is catching tonight.

Filling in for Luis Castillo, Hancock will make his 10th major league start of the year tonight against the Rangers. He was 3-4 with a 4.76 ERA in the previous nine. Expectations are that he’ll remain up and start again versus the Yankees next week.

Zavala didn’t play this time around in his three days with the Mariners. He’s hit .154/.214/.282 in 18 games for Seattle this season.

They could have at least made something up to sound more like a minor injury. Kwan will return Saturday, we assume.

McLain was originally expected to miss about four months after shoulder surgery, but a stress reaction in his rib ruined that timetable. He’ll still likely be penciled into the Reds’ 2025 lineup, probably at second base.

Even if it’s a minor setback, this is going to make it very difficult for Glasnow to return during the regular season. He last pitched on Aug. 11 before going on the IL with elbow tendinitis. The Dodgers declared that there was no structural damage at the time.

Harvey initially began throwing just a week after going on the injured list, but he experienced a setback then. At best, he might return to make two or three appearances before the end of the regular season.

Albies, normally a switch-hitter, said he’ll be able to play within the next week, if the Braves let him. He thinks he’ll need just one rehab game. Apparently, he didn’t at all like Brian Snitker saying Friday that he was iffy for the rest of the season.
