  • CLE Relief Pitcher #46
Guardians sent RHP Tyler Beede outright to Triple-A Columbus.
Beede went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last week by the Guardians after struggling to an inflated 8.36 ERA over 14 innings (13 appearances) in his first stint back in the majors since 2022. The 30-year-old righty will most likely wind up electing free agency.
  • LAD Shortstop #50
The Dodgers have Mookie Betts at second base and Miguel Rojas at shortstop in Wednesday’s game against the Mets.
It’s Betts’ first start at second base in exactly a month, as the Dodgers had been leaving him at shortstop when playing Rojas over Gavin Lux against lefties. This is how they did it in April before making Betts a permanent shortstop in recent weeks.
  • SD Center Fielder #3
Jackson Merrill is back in center field Wednesday after getting the day off against a lefty on Tuesday.
The Padres are again facing a lefty, but Merrill has been starting against most of them, even though he’s hitting just .233/.261/.233 in 46 plate appearances against them. He’s also 7-for-35 with no extra-base hits or walks in his last eight games overall.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #23
Mets activated LHP David Peterson from the 60-day injured list.
Peterson, who is coming off hip surgery, will make his season debut against the Dodgers tonight. He impressed on his rehab assignment, amassing a 1.14 ERA and a 35/3 K/BB ratio in 23 2/3 innings, and he’ll be worth watching if he gets a chance to stick in the Mets rotation. That’s not assured, though.
  • NYM Relief Pitcher #91
Mets optioned LHP Josh Walker to Triple-A Syracuse.
Walker’s two stints with the Mets this season have produced a 2.08 ERA in 8 2/3 innings. He’ll be back.
  • TEX Second Baseman #2
A “banged up” Marcus Semien is out of the Rangers lineup Wednesday for the first time since May 12, 2022.
Semien has been playing at less than 100 percent after colliding with Adolis García in left field on May 18 and is just 4-for-33 at the plate in eight games since the incident. The Rangers are off Thursday and are hoping that a two-day break will help.
  • STL Third Baseman #28
Nolan Arenado is out of the Cardinals lineup Wednesday in what manager Oli Marmol said was a day off scheduled long ago.
It’s apparently very important to note that this is not a reaction to Arenado’s lengthy slump, and last night’s homer didn’t result in a change of heart and putting him into the lineup today. Brendan Donovan is starting at third base, and Matt Carpenter is getting a start at DH.
  • STL Relief Pitcher #65
Giovanny Gallegos, who is on the IL with a shoulder impingement, is expected to begin a rehab assignment later this week.
Probably in part because of his early struggles, the Cardinals have gone a little more slowly with Gallegos than they might have a couple of years ago. It could be a quick rehab assignment if he looks strong right away, but given that he had a 12.00 ERA in 13 appearances before going down, a lengthier minor league stint might be deemed necessary.
  • COL Third Baseman #24
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Rockies are unlikely to move Ryan McMahon this summer, though the Blue Jays and other clubs have interest in him.
McMahon has busted out or at least enjoyed an extended hot streak this season, coming in at .286/.366/.483 to date. That’s a 135 OPS+ from a guy who has never before topped 100 in a season. Still, the Rockies, who have McMahon signed through 2027, have never heard of the concept of selling high.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #93
Braves selected the contract of RHP Spencer Schwellenbach from Double-A Mississippi.
Schwellenbach, who was 4-1 with a 1.80 ERA and a 51/10 K/BB ratio in 45 innings between high-A and Double-A, will make his major league debut today against the Nationals. He’s not assured of sticking around for the long haul, but he has the talent to do so.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #46
Braves optioned RHP Jimmy Herget to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Herget pitched three scoreless innings in four days on Atlanta’s roster, which will definitely help his chances of getting the call next time the team needs another reliever.
