James Paxton is planning on retiring after the season, he told WEEI’s Rob Bradford.
That’s a bummer, but it’s hard to blame him after so many injury issues during a career that began with the Mariners in 2013. The 35-year-old lefty had just started a second stint with the Red Sox this summer when he suffered a torn calf on Aug. 11. Because of the injuries, Paxton never reached his Cy Young potential or went to an All-Star Game. However, he did fan 208 batters in 2018, and he won 15 games before pitching well in his one postseason experience with the Yankees in 2019. Assuming he sticks to this, he’ll finish his career 73-41 with a 3.77 ERA and 1,005 strikeouts in 951 innings. His .640 winning percentage places him 17th among all pitchers with 100 decisions during the expansion era (post-1961).

Angel Martinez is not in the Guardians’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Rangers.
It appears to be nothing more than a routine night off for the 24-year-old outfielder. Daniel Schneemann will start in his place in center field and will bat sixth for the Guardians against Rangers’ right-hander Kumar Rocker.

James Schiano discusses the improvement that Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has made on offense in recent weeks, including the .455 batting average and 1.409 OPS he has posted in his last five games.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #48
Brewers recalled RHP Craig Yoho from Triple-A Nashville.
He’ll replace Jake Woodford in the team’s bullpen. Yoho, 26, has been outstanding in 16 appearances at the Triple-A level this season, posting a minuscule 1.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and a 24/5 K/BB ratio over 18 innings. He’ll give manager Pat Murphy another weapon to deploy from the right side in late game situations.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #41
Brewers designated RHP Jake Woodford for assignment.
The Brewers needed to free up a spot on their roster on Friday and unfortunately for the 29-year-old hurler, he wound up on the outside looking in. Woodford made 16 appearances during his time with the Brewers, posting a disappointing 6.94 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and a 20/7 K/BB ratio over 23 1/3 innings. While good pitching depth is hard to come by, there’s a chance that he could slide through waivers unclaimed.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher
Brewers recalled LHP Brian Fitzpatrick from Triple-A Nashville.
The 26-year-old left-hander gets another opportunity to work out of the Brewers’ bullpen with DL Hall (pectoral) landing on the injured list on Friday. He has made four appearances with the big league club so far this season, registering a 1.59 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and a 4/3 K/BB ratio over 5 2/3 innings.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher #37
Brewers placed LHP DL Hall on the 15-day injured list with a left pectoral strain.
Hall suffered the injury during Thursday’s outing against the Giants. Still no word on the results of his MRI exam or how long he may be sidelined for. Brian Fitzpatrick was recalled from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move on Friday to take his spot in the Brewers’ bullpen.
  • STL Shortstop #26
JJ Wetherholt was held out of the Cardinals’ starting lineup for the second straight game on Friday due to a lower body injury.
Wetherholt was given what was thought to be a routine day off on Wednesday, but he’s actually battling a lower body injury. He’s considered day-to-day. Bryan Torres will start in his place at second base and will bat fifth for the Cardinals against Brady Singer and the Reds.
  • ATH Designated Hitter #25
Brent Rooker (knee) returned to the Athletics’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Astros.
Rooker was held out of the lineup on Thursday against the Cubs, though he did appear as a pinch hitter. He’s serving as the A’s designated hitter and batting cleanup against Astros’ right-hander Peter Lambert on Friday evening in Houston.
  • TB Shortstop #6
Taylor Walls (hamstring) returned to the Rays’ starting lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Marlins in Miami.
Walls missed each of the team’s previous two games due to a recurring hamstring issue. He feels much improved after a couple of days off though and is back in there at shortstop and batting ninth against Ryan Gusto and the Marlins on Friday evening in Miami.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #37
Athletics recalled RHP Elvis Alvarado from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Alvarado, 27, has been knocked around in 10 appearances with the Athletics this season, posting a cringe-inducing 8.38 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and a 9/7 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 innings. He’ll function in a middle relief role for manager Mark Kotsay and can be ignored for fantasy purposes.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #67
Athletics designated RHP Joel Kuhnel for assignment.
The 31-year-old hurler came on with a three-run lead to protect in the ninth inning against the Cubs on Thursday afternoon and gave up four runs on five hits to take the loss. That appears to have been the final nail in his coffin. Kuhnel posted a respectable 4.21 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 14/6 K/BB ratio over 25 2/3 innings while notching four saves in 25 appearances for the A’s. He shouldn’t be out of work for long.
