José Berríos racked up nine strikeouts over six innings of shutout baseball in an impressive victory over the Athletics on Thursday evening.
The 31-year-old right-hander allowed just two hits on the night while walking a pair. The Jays’ offense staked him to an eight-run advantage after the second inning and all Berríos had to do was keep the train on the tracks to earn a victory in this one. His only jam came in the sixth inning where the first two batters reached, but they never advanced from there as Berríos bore down to retire the next three hitters in order. He got 11 whiffs on 90 pitches on the evening, registering a CSW of 32 percent. He’ll try to replicate this outstanding effort when he brings a 3.86 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 65/28 K/BB ratio (70 innings) into Wednesday’s tilt against the Phillies.
