Brown added that the club still views Matthews as a second baseman primarily, but he’ll get some time in the outfield moving forward after hitting .167 (7-for-42) with four homers and one steal during a brief 13-game late-season cameo with the Astros. The 23-year-old former first-round pick will increase his defensive versatility to battle for a bench role with the Astros in camp. He’s shown some flashes of power/speed combo upside, which makes him interesting from a fantasy perspective, but an inflated 27.9 percent strikeout rate across 498 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this past season suggests that he’ll battle some serious contact issues at the highest level.

Arroyo last appeared in an MLB game in 2023 with the Boston Red Sox. He spent all of last season in the Phillies’ organization, slashing .314/.384/.485 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley while hitting five home runs. He can play all over the infield and even played some outfield with the Red Sox, so he’s a true utility player.

The New York Post was told by the Franklin Township Chief of Police that charges will be pressed against the driver who ran a stop sign and collided head on with Cairone and his girlfriend, who is also recovering from injuries. The 18-year-old Cairone was the Brewers’ second-round pick in 2025. He’s yet to make his professional debut since being drafted out of a New Jersey high school.

Serven last appeared in the majors with the Blue Jays in 2024. He spent 2025 with the Detroit Tigers, slashing .232/.335/.313 with three home runs in 62 games at Triple-A Toledo. He’s simply organizational catching depth.

Charles last pitched for the Orioles in 2024, posting an 8.60 ERA, 2.18 WHIP, and 32/33 K/BB ratio across 30 1/3 innings (31 appearances) between Triple-A Norfolk and Double-A Bowie. He did not receive an invitation to spring training.

File had been in Korea in 2024 before signing a minor league deal to return to the States and play in the Mariners organization. Last year, he had a 4.74 ERA in 125.1 innings across 27 games at Double-A. He’s simply organizational depth.

The Orioles claimed Soriano off waivers from the Marlins back in November, but he’ll be waived without throwing a pitch for Baltimore. The 26-year-old has a 7.64 ERA in 66 innings over his last two seasons. There’s a good chance he passes through waivers unclaimed.

Noel was designated for assignment in December after hitting just .162/.183/.297 with 52 strikeouts in 153 plate appearances last season. He has tremendous raw power, but struggles to make consistent contact and has a real issue with hitting right-handed pitching. The Orioles will likely hope he can emerge as a short-side platoon option with their many left-handed hitters.

Alfaro spent most of last season in Triple-A for the Nationals organization, hitting 15 home runs in 82 games. He also hit .256 (10-for-39) with zero homers, three RBIs, and a 14/0 K/BB ratio with the big league club. The 32-year-old has a .692 career OPS with a 27% caught stealing rate over parts of nine MLB seasons.

Wiemer was once a top prospect in the Brewers organization, but spent last season with the Marlins. He hit .236/.279/.436 with three homers, 12 RBI, and a 23/2 K/BB ratio in 61 plate appearances for Miami before being designated for assignment. He was then traded to the Giants in the offseason before the Giants also designated him for assignment in December to make room for Jason Foley. Wiemer is a strong defender and will try to make the Nationals as a fourth outfielder.

The move was announced on December 31st and is official now. Mahle lacks the fastball velocity and the sharpness of his breaking balls than he did in previous seasons prior to injuries, but he did post a 2.18 ERA in his 16 starts with the Rangers last season. His injury history makes it hard to rely on him to stay healthy for a full season, but he should be solid for the Giants when he’s on the mound.
