Trey Lipscomb went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a walk as a Nationals split-squad topped the Cardinals 6-2 on Saturday.

Lipscomb, who broke out at this time two years ago, is in Nationals camp as a non-roster player after clearing waivers back in November. The Nationals don’t have an established third baseman and might slide Luis García Jr. from second to first, so there’s opportunity for Lipscomb to come away with a job with a big March. Last year’s .249/.305/.392 line in Triple-A doesn’t bode well, however.

Guardians optioned OF Daniel Schneemann to Triple-A Columbus.

Schneemann has been with the Guardians since Opening Day, and was hitting .206/.275/.321 with six stolen bases and six homers in 276 plate appearances. He had only started eight games since the beginning of July, so it’s fair to say his playing time had dried up. Still, it’s a little surprising to see him sent down here.

Guardians optioned LHP Will Dion to Triple-A Columbus.

He pitched in just three games since being recalled, giving up two earned runs and one homer in 4 1/3 innings. His heart will go on in Columbus.

Guardians activated LHP Tim Herrin from the 15-day injured list.

Herrin had a 3.06 ERA in 32 1/3 innings for the Guardians before going down with a left elbow contusion earlier this month. He missed the minimum amount of time and returns to a lefty specialist role that could yield holds in deeper fantasy leagues.

Guardians activated LF Angel Martínez from the 10-day injured list.

Martínez was playing essentially everyday while hitting .239/.276/.442 with 11 homers and nine stolen bases in 243 plate appearances before suffering a foot fracture in mid-June. He’ll likely be a big part of the Guardians lineup again right away, and fantasy managers can jump on him if he was dropped in shallower leagues. He’s batting leadoff tonight against the Rays.

Cubs optioned DH Kevin Alcántara to Triple-A Iowa.

Alcántara was called up in late June and drew playing time in just seven games, only four of which he actually started, while hitting .273/.273/.273 in 11 plate appearances. He’ll try to get back on track in Iowa, as one does.

Cubs recalled 2B James Triantos from Triple-A Iowa.

Triantos has hit .306/.344/.440 at Triple-A Iowa this year and is only 23, but seems unlikely to have a real role with the Cubs for the time being so he can mostly be ignored for fantasy purposes. Perhaps he’ll spell Nico Hoerner some if Hoerner keeps struggling.

Phillies selected the contract of C Payton Henry from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Henry, who last played in the bigs in 2022, hit .201/.285/.291 between Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Lehigh Valley in 200 plate appearances. He’ll spell JT Realmuto if Realmuto really needs a day off.

Phillies placed C Rafael Marchán on the 10-day injured list retroactive to July 23 with left knee patellar tendinitis.

Marchán will be the second Phillies backup catcher to end up on the injured list. It’s unknown how much time he’ll miss. Marchán was hitting .102/.141/.170 in 92 plate appearances.

Phillies transferred RHP Brad Keller from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.

This is purely procedural; Keller is out for the year with a torn UCL and will likely miss most of next year as well.

Dylan Beavers is batting leadoff for the Orioles against the Braves on Friday.

The Orioles have slowly moved Gunnar Henderson down the lineup, and he’s now hitting third for the fourth-straight game while hitting .225/.296/.405. We’re not positive that Beavers will stick as the leadoff man — he’s only hit above fifth three times since he returned from the injured list and this is his first crack at leadoff. But he is hitting .313/.371/.406 in July and would seem to have a decent skill set to hit leadoff. If he did stick as the leadoff man against right-handed pitchers, obviously, it would help his fantasy value quite a bit.
