Colson Montgomery went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts against the Reds on Saturday.
Montgomery is hitting .180/.212/.360 with 18 strikeouts in 52 plate appearances this spring. The White Sox certainly have to roll with him as a regular after his performance in the second half of last year, but it seems like a bad sign that manager Will Venable has him batting second regularly. The power production will be there, but the over/under for his OBP this year is right around .300.

Cubs selected the contract of OF Michael Conforto from Triple-A Iowa.
Conforto winds up getting a spot on Chicago’s season-opening roster following knee injuries to Seiya Suzuki and Tyler Austin. The 33-year-old veteran struggled with the Dodgers last year but he should continue to get opportunities against right-handed pitchers.
Brown, Cease sneaky picks to win AL Cy Young award
Jay Croucher and Trysta Krick predict who will win the American League Cy Young award, sharing why Astros pitcher Hunter Brown is a good bet and Blue Jays starter Dylan Cease has "killer stuff" and a "lot of upside."
  • CHC 2nd Baseman #13
Cubs selected the contract of INF/OF Scott Kingery from Triple-A Iowa.
Kingery is further proof that defensive versatility is the surest path to a bench role in the modern era. The 31-year-old utility specialist’s career didn’t play out as anticipated when the Phillies signed him to a long-term contract extension when he was one of the better prospects in the game but he’s managed to stick around on the fringes of several organizations. He’ll open the year in a limited role coming off Chicago’s bench.
  • CHC Right Fielder #27
Cubs placed OF Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 22, with a right knee sprain.
Suzuki doesn’t appear to be facing an extended absence since he’s already resumed baseball activities. However, he’ll require a minor league rehab stint to get his timing back after missing a couple weeks of game action. The 31-year-old corner outfielder belted a career-high 32 home runs and piled up 103 RBI over 151 games for Chicago last year. It’ll be Matt Shaw taking over in right field while he’s on the shelf.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #37
Cubs placed RHP Porter Hodge on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 22, with a right elbow strain.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters Hodge could potentially be cleared to resume throwing in early April, which would put him on track to make it back at some point in late April or early May.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #36
Cubs placed LHP Jordan Wicks on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 22, with left elbow inflammation.
Wicks could be ready to return to Chicago’s bullpen mix by mid-April after progressing to throwing bullpen sessions last week. He made eight relief appearances last year for the Cubs, finishing with an underwhelming 6.28 ERA — 3.98 xERA — and 13/1 K/BB ratio across 14 1/3 innings.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #35
Cubs placed LHP Justin Steele on the 60-day injured list.
Steele has already progressed to facing hitters in live batting practice and should be cleared to head out on a minor league rehab assignment at some point in April. The 30-year-old southpaw underwent Tommy John surgery last April and is on track to return to Chicago’s rotation at some point in May or June.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #37
Cubs designated RHP Jack Neely for assignment.
Neely winds up losing his spot on Chicago’s 40-man roster to make room for veteran position players Scott Kingery and Michael Conforto. The 25-year-old righty hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since making six relief appearances for the Cubs back in 2024.
  • KC 2nd Baseman #19
Royals placed 2B Michael Massey on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain.
Massey was probably going to have a bench spot if healthy, but he was limited to eight appearances in the first half of the spring. He should begin a rehab assignment soon and could be activated afterwards, but if Jonathan India gets off to a nice start at second base, it’s also possible Massey could be sent down for a spell.
  • KC Relief Pitcher #66
Royals placed RHP James McArthur on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
McArthur missed 2025 following elbow surgery and still isn’t ready to pitch in games, though it might happen soon. He was last seen posting a 4.92 ERA in 56 2/3 innings out of the Royals pen in 2024.
  • KC Starting Pitcher #32
Royals placed RHP Stephen Kolek on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain.
Kolek, who got hurt a month ago, has resumed throwing off a mound and should start a rehab assignment soon. As the seventh or eighth starter on the Royals’ depth chart, he figures to be optioned to Triple-A once healthy.
