Shohei Ohtani pitched six shutout innings with six strikeouts in a win over the Guardians on Tuesday.
Ohtani had an outstanding season debut on the mound, holding the Guardians scoreless over six frames. He allowed just one hit and issued three walks while striking out six on 11 whiffs. Ohtani topped out at 99 mph and sat 96.8 mph on a rainy night in Los Angeles. The 31-year-old two-way star added a hit and two walks at the dish. He lines up to make his next start on the mound Monday against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Dodgers acquired LHP Jake Eder from Nationals for cash considerations.
Eder had been designated for assignment by the Nationals over the weekend, so they will at least be able to get something for him. The 27-7ear-old had once been a high-upside prospect, but he has now failed to stick with the Marlins, White Sox, and Nationals. It’s a long shot that the Dodgers will find a way to change that trajectory. He will head ot Tripe-A Oklahoma City to see.
McGonigle, Murakami seize early control of AL ROY
Trysta Krick and Vaughn Dalzell break down why Kevin McGonigle and Munetaka Murakami are the two best bets to win AL Rookie of the Year to open the MLB season.

Cody Ponce (knee) will visit Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday in Los Angeles.
While Dr. ElAttrache is mostly connected to Tommy John surgery, he is an orthopedic surgeon who sees players for all kinds of injuries. Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Dr. ElAttrache wanted to “get his hands on [Ponce], and decide what route to take. Surgery is on the table.” This is not the best development, but we will have to wait until next week to know what the outlook is for Ponce.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #43
Patrick Sandoval (elbow) will start for Double-A Portland on Tuesday.
Sandoval is working his way back from elbow surgery that cost him the entire 2025 season. His velocity has been good in spring workouts, but he has yet to get into a game. With Johan Oviedo struggling, there is a path for Sandoval to emerge as a long reliever for the Red Sox after a few rehab appearances.
  • CHC Right Fielder #27
Seiya Suzuki (knee) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Knoxville on Friday.
Suzuki is dealing with a knee sprain he suffered in the World Baseball Classic, but he figures to be back in the Cubs’ lineup soon. Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that he expects Suzuki’s rehab assignment to be between 3-7 days. Moises Ballesteros is just 3-for-16 to start the season with a 6/2 K/BB ratio, while Matt Shaw is 2-for-11 with just one strikeout and no walks. One of them figures to lose playing time whenever Suzuki is back; it depends on how often the Cubs want Suzuki to play the field.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #99
Blue Jays returned RHP Angel Bastardo to the Red Sox.
Bastardo was taken by the Blue Jays in the Rule 5 draft, but he did not make the Opening Day roster, so he will be returned to the Red Sox. The 23-year-old pitched to a 5.36 ERA in 10 starts (45.1 innings) in Double-A last season.
  • BOS 1st Baseman #36
Triston Casas (knee) will now be shut down from hitting after suffering a strained left intercostal muscle.
Casas is already on the IL while recovering from left patellar tendon surgery, so this just adds another injury to the list. The intercostal muscle is a muscle near the oblique/ribs, but the indication right now is that this is not connected to Casas’ fractured rib and rib cartilage injury two years ago. For now, he “is shut down from hitting until symptoms subside, but hasn’t gotten an MRI. The Red Sox will see how he progresses in the coming days.” It’s looking like a May return to Boston is no longer in the cards for Casas.
  • BOS Right Fielder #19
Roman Anthony is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Astros.
Anthony is just one of many members of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic to get off to a slow start to the season. The talented 21-year-old is just 4-for-21 to begin the season with a whopping 11 strikeouts and three walks. Perhaps a reset will help, but Anthony is being far too passive at the start of this season and getting himself into too many bad counts. Jarren Duran will play left field with Masataka Yoshida entering the lineup at designated hitter and batting third.
  • BOS Catcher #75
Carlos Narváez was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup against the Astros for disciplinary reasons.
As of now, we have no idea what the issue is, but Narváez said the decision to scratch him was “nothing physical,” and Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, “This is something that happens in every club. Or just happens to be early in the season. It’s the right thing to do.” Hopefully this is just one game absence. Connor Wong will start in his place.
  • TB Shortstop #7
Carson Williams is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Brewers.
The rookie has struggled to start the season, going 3-for-19 with six strikeouts and one walk. The Rays had also demoted him to Triple-A before Taylor Walls (oblique) got injured, so Williams’ hold on the job may not be overly strong. Ben Williamson will shift to shortstop with Richie Palacios entering the starting lineup at second base and batting ninth.
  • LAA Right Fielder #3
Josh Lowe is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Cubs.
This is the first time that the Angels have faced a left-handed starter this season, and both Nolan Schanuel and Josh Lowe are on the bench. That will be something to monitor as the season goes on. Jeimer Candelario will start at first base and bat seventh, while Bryce Teodosio will play left field and bat ninth.
