Nationals optioned RHP Julian Fernández to Triple-A Rochester.

The Nationals needed to clear a spot on their active roster for the promotion of Riley Cornelio on Thursday and it looks like Fernández drew the short straw this time around. The 30-year-old right-hander posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across four innings in three appearances out of the Nats’ bullpen.

Athletics placed LHP Jeffrey Springs on the 15-day IL, retroactive to Aug. 1, with right hip discomfort.

Springs’ hip has been a problem since at least April, though this is his first IL stint of the year. It’s not yet clear whether this will be a brief rest to try to get him closer to 100 percent or if he’s being shut down. The left-hander has a 6.17 ERA in 22 starts this year. With Springs going down, both Mason Barnett and Jack Perkins should keep starting for now. One was expected to be removed from the rotation with J.T. Ginn back.
Benetti says any team could have traded for Skubal
Jason Benetti chats with Dan Le Batard about the Dodgers acquiring Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, discussing why he doesn't have sympathy for the teams who didn't land the star pitcher.

Athletics activated RHP J.T. Ginn from the 15-day injured list.

Ginn will take on the Reds tonight after a minimum IL stay due to blister issues.

Athletics recalled INF Max Muncy from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Muncy still needs to prove he should be in the Athletics’ plans for 2027, so he ought to get a lot of time at third base for the A’s with Nick Kurtz down. He’s hit .223/.298/.389 in 178 plate appearances in the majors this season.

Athletics designated LHP Ben Bowden for assignment.

Bowden, called up Saturday, allowed four runs in one inning in his one appearance with the A’s.

Athletics sent RHP Chen Zhong-Ao Zhuang outright to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Zhuang was DFA’d last week without ever having pitched in the majors. He’ll remain with Las Vegas, where he’s amassed a 7.84 ERA in 12 starts and three relief appearances this season.

Athletics placed 1B Nick Kurtz on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 1, with a strained right thumb.

The A’s let Kurtz rush back from his original thumb injury last month and will pay the price, though not really, since they’re not playing for much anyway. It’s unclear as of yet whether Kurtz will return this season. The A’s will likely go with Tommy White at first base, opening up time at third base for Max Muncy and Donovan Walton.

Giants activated OF Jonah Cox from the 10-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento.

Even though the Giants have been shedding position players, the team decided there was no room for Cox on the roster following his four-week absence due to a strained oblique. He was 7-for-26 with a homer and four steals before landing on the injured list.

Royals activated SS Bobby Witt Jr. from the 10-day injured list.

Witt is returning from back tightness without a rehab assignment after 13 days on the injured list. He’ll probably get more days off than usual in the near future, but fantasy teams will surely want him back in their lineups right away.

Royals recalled RHP Jose Cuas from Triple-A Omaha.

Cuas is up to join the Royals pen for a third time this season after allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings the first two go arounds. He has a career 4.30 ERA in 125 2/3 innings since debuting in 2022.

Royals designated LHP Matt Strahm for assignment.

The signs were there last year that Strahm was slipping, which is why the Royals were able to get him from the Phillies for Jonathan Bowlan, but the magnitude of his collapse is still stunning. He went from posting a 2.71 ERA the last three years to 7.32 in 41 appearances this season. There will be teams interested in taking a chance on him once he clears waivers, but if anyone was willing to take on the remainder of his $7.5 million salary, that would have happened prior to Monday’s deadline.
