Michael Busch is absent from the Cubs’ starting lineup for Sunday’s soiree against the Cardinals.

Busch had been mired in a bit of a power outage lately, slashing just .253/.290/.316 with one homer, nine RBI and an 18/4 K/BB ratio over 100 plate appearances in his last 22 ballgames. He’ll get a day off to reset in this one with Pedro Ramirez filling in at first base and batting sixth against Cardinals’ right-hander Hunter Dobbins.

Ryan Vilade went all out to cover plenty of ground in right field, where the Rays right fielder crashed into the wall and held on to complete the double play.

Nationals’ manager Blake Butera told reporters on Sunday that star outfielder James Wood (oblique) has been slow to progress in his recovery.

Butera didn’t term it as a setback necessarily, but he still isn’t ready to progress to more strenuous baseball activities. At this rate, it would be surprising to see him back it back before the end of August.

Jacob Wilson (finger) returned to the Athletics’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Rangers.

Wilson was removed from Friday’s game after being hit by a pitch and sat out Saturday’s game due to swelling in his finger. He’s back in there at shortstop and batting third against Rangers’ southpaw Cody Bradford on Sunday afternoon in West Sacramento.

Hunter Goodman (shoulder) was held out of the Rockies’ lineup for a third consecutive game on Sunday.

The Rockies had been hopeful that Goodman would return to the lineup on Saturday but was ultimately scratched due to inflammation in his shoulder. If he isn’t ready to go for Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers, the Rockies may be forced to consider a backdated stint on the injured list. Brett Sullivan will once again fill in behind the dish and will bat eighth against the Giants on Sunday.

José Fermín is not in the Cardinals’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s showdown against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Fermín has become a fixture in the Cardinals’ lineup, splitting his time between left field and third base, but he’ll get a breather in this one. Blaze Jordan will take his place at the hot corner and will bat ninth against Cubs’ right-hander Edward Cabrera on Sunday.

Athletics recalled INF Darell Hernaiz from Triple-A Las Vegas.

With Tyler Soderstrom (hip) landing on the injured list on Sunday, Hernaiz will get another opportunity to show the A’s what he can do at the MLB level. The 25-year-old has hit .237/.318/.288 with one homer, seven RBI and three stolen bases in 134 plate appearances with the A’s this season.

Athletics placed OF Tyler Soderstrom on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 15, with a left hip impingement.

The 24-year-old slugger will be shelved for at least a couple of weeks while dealing with the hip issue. Darell Hernaiz was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move to take his place on the A’s active roster.

Willy Adames (back) was held out of the Giants’ starting lineup for the third consecutive game on Sunday.

While the Giants have yet to place Adames on the injured list, it has to be a growing consideration at this point. It may actually be in the Giants’ best interest just to shut him down for the remainder of the season to ensure that he gets right heading into 2027. Fantasy managers who are relying on him for next week should have a contingency plan in place to be on the safe side.

Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday that Cody Bellinger (hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday.

Bellinger will play in rehab games on Tuesday and Thursday — likely at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre — before being re-evaluated. If all goes well, he could be cleared to rejoin the Yankees’ lineup for their weekend series against the Blue Jays. The 31-year-old slugger has been shelved since late July due to a left hamstring strain.

Nick Gonzales (head) remains out of the Pirates’ starting lineup for Sunday’s tilt against the Red Sox.

Gonzales was removed from Friday’s game after being hit on the helmet by a pitch. He passed through the concussion protocol but was held out of action on Saturday as a precautionary measure and will get an extra day on Sunday as well. He’s expected to be available off the bench if needed.
