1. What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

Going into this draft, I knew many of the highly ranked quarterbacks were Power-5 players, so I wanted to wait on that position and grab as many top running backs and receivers as early as possible. In a 16-team league, using G5 players only, the talent level takes a significant dip after the first 2-3 rounds. By the sixth round, I realized the quarterback pool was thinning out, so I prioritized the position by selecting all five of my quarterbacks in rounds 8-13. Securing handcuffs is necessary in bestball formats, so I am satisfied with my three double-ups, two at running back (Louisiana and SMU) and one at quarterback (Navy). I like my top two receivers, Marquez Stevenson (Houston) and Kevin Austin (Notre Dame), but my quarterback plunge in the middle rounds may have cost me at receiver, which is where I feel most exposed.

2. What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

After going seven rounds without selecting a quarterback, I felt really good about securing both Navy quarterbacks (Perry Olsen-Rd 8 & Dalen Morris-Rd 13), knowing one may potentially be a major fantasy contributor in 2020. 28 quarterbacks were selected ahead of Olsen, and for that reason, the Navy duo were my favorite picks. My least favorite pick was Middle Tennessee running back Amir Rasul, not because I fear he won’t be a good player, but I did not realize until after the selection that there was an 8-player roster maximum on running backs, and I had every intention of handcuffing my Jaylon Bester pick with Tyre Shelton. The defending MAC champions return four starters on the offensive line and I wanted all the shares of the Redhawks’ running game, but Rasul counted as my eighth running back. I prefer to have Shelton over Rasul in the bestball format.

3. Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

I usually don’t blink when someone drafts a player that I have at the top of my queue when I am on deck, but Kyle Francis’ selection of O’Maury Samuels (RB-NMSt) at 7.07 got me. I had drafted Samuels at No. 225 overall in a late-June Full FBS draft that we had both participated in, so his selection of Samuels at No. 119 overall in this draft was no surprise. However, when you are participating in multiple drafts with the same guys, you usually have to move on the players you desire a little earlier with each passing draft.

4. Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

Air Force fullback Timothy Jackson suffered and injury at the end of last year, but should be ready for preseason camp, so I like Eric Froton’s selection of him in round 12. If North Texas can identify a successor to Mason Fine at quarterback, I think Mike Bainbridge found starting value with receiver Jyaire Shorter in round 11.

5. Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

I usually find it easier to identify teams I don’t like, as opposed to identifying teams that I prefer more than mine. And while the late-round selections will likely decide a league such as this one, I’ll base my decision on selecting a team that would look similar to mine through 5-6 rounds in an alternative universe with the same group of owners. When looking at Joe ‘Bot’ Capozzi’s roster through six rounds, it looks like a team I would draft.

1. What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

Beyond not embarrassing myself as I play above my weight class? For G5, the plan was to stay balanced. Play it safe early and hope for some key rotation guys as we got deeper. I think I pulled that off.

2. What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

It’s lame to say Damonte Coxie in Round 1, but I loved getting him at #6. Worried about not having Norvell anymore, but he was my #3 guy. Also, Brett Gabbert as well (says the totally unbiased Miami Ohio grad).

3. Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

Joe DiSalvo sniped Jaylon Bester from me in Round 6.

4. Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

Kyle Porter, RB, Houston. I’m hoping this is the year he really breaks out. Totally worth the risk here.

5. Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

Kyle Francis

1. What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

The G5 doesn’t provide as many passing fantasy points as the P5, and the QBs and WRs dry up quicker. With that in mind, I was hoping to stock up on those positions early. I was able to do that; in my first five picks, I took ECU QB Holton Ahlers and three WR.

2. What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

The one non-QB/WR I took in the first five rounds was UTSA RB Sincere McCormick, and I think he was a good value where I popped him in R3.

Situationally, one regret I had might be taking Hawaii WR Rico Bussey in R5. I thought he was an exceptional value there and that I had no choice — and a part of me stands by that — but I had to sacrifice no-doubt QB starters in this format like Nick Starkel and Desmond Ritter, who went after Bussey and before my next pick. The QBs dropped a tier after that, which prompted me to wait until later to take my QB2, Tulsa’s Zach Smith. Smith would be an outstanding QB3 but is a risky QB2, not unlike Tommy DeVito in the P5 (they play in similar offenses — vestiges of the old Briles offense at Baylor — to boot). I wonder if I should have sacrificed Bussey to get a stronger QB2.

3. Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

To continue from above, Nate Marchese’s pick of Starkel in Round 5 was really strong with the quarterback talent pool about to drop off. Particularly because he grabbed Starkel’s primary competition for the job later to lock up what should be a high-scoring QB room.

Kyle Francis taking NMSU RB O’Maury Samuels mid-R7 was also an inspiring pick based on Samuels’ potential, the system he’s entering, and the fact that the Aggies just lost their starting RB to the NFL.

4. Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

A few of my favorites: Kyle Francis grabbing Marcus McElroy in Round 13 (coaching staff/system change will lead to more running), Greg Brandt popping ODU WR Eric Kumah in Round 12 (primed for a Year 2 breakout after dropping down from the P5) and Scott Bogman picking Joaquim Bangda in Round 15 (if he beats out Xavier Williams, he’s going to put up huge stats in that hurry-up offense).

In addition to Kumah, a ton of high-upside receivers went off the board in Rounds 12-13 — Jordan Kress, Octavius Evans and his teammate CT Thomas, and Dahu Green all offered weekly starting potential at discount prices. With John Hightower and Omar Bayless gone from Boise State and Arkansas State, respectively, those high-powered offenses have plenty of available targets to redistribute.

5. Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

Mike Bainbridge killed it. I love his QB and WR rooms, and he appropriately waited a bit on RB (the deepest position in the G5) — but scooped up big values when he addressed that position.

I really like Tom Downey’s roster as well.

Honorable mention to Eric Froton, whose roster is really well fleshed out from top-to-bottom. But Froton took a big hit in the days after the draft ended when former UNLV QB Amari Rodgers announced he was transferring to Ohio, putting Kurtis Rourke’s projected starting job in jeopardy. If Rourke isn’t the guy, Froton’s QB room probably becomes too thin to win the league.

1. What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

Running Back, Running Back…I wanted to acquire a solid two-man punch in the backfield. I drafted Justin Henderson, Louisiana Tech and Ronnie Rivers, Fresno State with my first two picks. I waited too long to acquire a second signal caller and had to dumpster dive at the position after Round 8…Ugh!

2. What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

In nearly every draft so far, I have targeted WR Victor Tucker, Charlotte and grabbed him in the fourth round as my top receiver on the roster. I really screwed up in Round 6. I wanted TE Quintin Morris, Bowling Green, but he only qualifies at WR in this best ball league, which diminishes his value for sure. Shame on me: I did not double-check the position availability.

3. Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

Runners are like pitchers in baseball: You can never have enough. I placed RB Charles Williams, UNVL in the queue for my fifth-round selection, but got sniped by Mike Bainbridge in Round 4. I really wanted to have an elite trio of running backs.

4. Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

Systems…Systems…Systems. Army’s triple-option attack maximizes the value of the running quarterback. In Round 14, Scott Bogman selected QB Jabari Lewis of the Black Knights, and I am envious for sure.

5. Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

If I could waive a magic wand and exchange teams, I would select Greg Brand’s squad. Like myself, he opened up drafting two terrific runners—George Holani, Boise St. and Xazavian Valladay, Wyoming—to anchor his roster. And he put together a strong wide receiver corps with Keylon Stokes, Rashee Rice and Randal Grimes.
