Royals placed SS Bobby Witt Jr. on the 10-day injured list with low back tightness.

This felt inevitable after Witt Jr. missed Sunday’s game with a back injury, then returned on Monday, only to leave that game early. The Royals have the second-worst record in the American League and are not in playoff contention, so they will likely be cautious with their star shortstop, especially when dealing with a back injury. We may not see Witt Jr. back for a few weeks. Tyler Tolbert will likely continue to play shortstop in his place.
Garrett Crochet

BOS Starting Pitcher #35

Tim Healey of the Boston Globe reports that “there are no guarantees that” Garrett Crochet (shoulder) will pitch again this year.

As Healey notes, Crochet is now three months into recovery for a shoulder injury that the Red Sox were initially not convinced needed an IL stint. Of course, that has included connected issues to separate parts of the shoulder that turned an inflammation designation into a lat strain. Crochet himself has stated that his goal is to pitch for the Red Sox in the postseason, but even that is not guaranteed at this point. Once Crochet is cleared, and he has not been yet, “he’ll need a spring training-esque six weeks or so, maybe longer” to be ready to pitch in an MLB game. It’s probably time to drop Crochet in all redraft fantasy leagues if you’ve been holding on this long.
George Lombard Jr.

NYY Shortstop #96

Yankees SS prospect George Lombard Jr. went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday.

In five games since returning from a finger injury, Lombard Jr. has gone 8-for-16 with three home runs, four RBI, eight runs scored, and a 4/4 K/BB ratio. Maybe the only thing he hasn’t done well is get thrown out stealing twice. The 21-year-old has a very real chance to push his way into the Yankees lineup in August if he keeps hitting like this after slashing .306/.426/.571 in 14 games in June.
Framber Valdez

DET Starting Pitcher #59

Framber Valdez lasted just two-thirds of an inning and gave up six runs Tuesday against the Cubs.

Valdez made his own trouble by giving up a triple, a walk and hitting a batter to start the game, but he could have escaped without too much trouble if Gleyber Torres had been anything more than a statue at second. As is, Carson Kelly singled in two runs on a ball to Torres’s left, Michael Busch singled in one on a ball to Torres’s right and Ian Happ singled in one on a popup to shallow right that neither Torres nor Michael Busch chased after. Valdez finally departed with his pitch count up to 42 pitches. He fell to 5-7 with a 4.57 ERA, but as disappointing as he’s been, we wouldn’t read too much into this one. He’ll face the Royals on Sunday.
Kohl Drake

AZ Starting Pitcher #58

Kohl Drake allowed one run and struck out five batters over five innings in a no-decision against the Athletics on Tuesday.

Drake was impressive in his MLB debut on Tuesday. He tossed two scoreless innings, then gave up one run on two hits in the third. The 26-year-old right-hander gave the Diamondbacks two more scoreless frames, giving up just the one run over five while collecting five strikeouts. Drake will look to follow the impressive outing in a road start against the Nationals on Sunday.
Julio Rodríguez

SEA Center Fielder #44

Julio Rodríguez went 1-for-2 with a solo homer off the bench against the Reds on Tuesday.

Rodríguez was left out of the starting lineup after exiting Monday’s game against Cincinnati with a leg injury. So, it was an excellent sign when he came off the bench as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning before taking over in center field. It was an even better sign when he took Julian Garcia deep for a solo homer to lead off the eighth inning. The 25-year-old outfielder is up to 15 homers, 48 runs scored, 43 RBI, and 12 steals while hitting .258/.321/.426 across 393 plate appearances.
Chase Burns

CIN Starting Pitcher #26

Chase Burns struck out six batters over five scoreless innings in a win over the Mariners on Tuesday.

Making his first start since signing a seven-year, $105 million deal with the Reds, Burns shut the Mariners down over five scoreless frames. He scattered three hits and two walks while striking out six batters. The 23-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 2.42 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and a 124/39 K/BB ratio across 107 2/3 innings. He’ll take on the Guardians in Cincinnati on Monday.
Walbert Ureña

LAA Starting Pitcher #57

Walbert Ureña allowed one run with five strikeouts over six innings in a win over the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Ureña was brilliant on Tuesday, holding the Cardinals to one run over six innings on his way to a win. The one run came in the fifth inning on two hits and a groundout. He scattered six hits in all and one walk while striking out five batters. The 22-year-old right-hander will take a 2.78 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and an 83/47 K/BB ratio across 87 1/3 innings into a start against the Astros in Anaheim on Monday.
CJ Abrams

WSH Shortstop #5

CJ Abrams went 2-for-3 with two homers and four RBI against the Rockies on Tuesday.

Abrams got the scoring started with a two-run blast off Michael Lorenzen in the first inning. He did it again in his next at-bat, taking Lorenzen deep for his second two-run homer. Abrams later drew a walk in the seventh to reach base for a third time. The 25-year-old shortstop is up to 24 homers, 61 runs scored, 76 RBI, and 15 steals while slashing .279/.354/.538 across 418 plate appearances.
Manny Machado

SD 3rd Baseman #13

Manny Machado hit his 21st and 22nd homers Tuesday in the Padres’ 8-3 drubbing of the Braves.

Machado is still hitting just .204. but he’s now tied for 11th in the majors in homers and for 28th with 59 RBI. Even if this winds up being the worst season of his career, he’ll probably get to 30 homers an eighth time and maybe to 100 RBI for a fifth time.
